its about that time of the year again when we look at how AH is doing and seeing what people think of the forum.

There have been a couple of complaints on the feedback forum recently, and while I am always one that believes you cant please all of the people all of the time, Id be interested to hear what sort of suggestions people have.

I will stick up a simple poll and if anyone has any comments or suggestions, feel free to make them

DO you feel that changes need to be made to the forum? 284 votes

Yes - we need some changes
    0% 0 votes
Yes - we need major changes
    26% 76 votes
Nope - Its fine the way it is
    16% 47 votes
Its ok, but I have some suggestions and have written them in below...

i like it just the way it is :)

Yup, all good. There's been a few cracking threads over the past few days and a lot of the rubbishy threads that were very active a few months ago have disappeared!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Generally fine, I could live with a few less toilet/self abuse threads though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,818 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

Still as mad cap as ever - as it should be.

If the Foreigner/Roma/Taxi Driver threads could be packaged up in nice flowery wrapping paper with a big pink satin bow & shipped over to Stormfront - never to be seen again - then AH would be even better.

Edit: While I think of it - fair dues to the Mods of AH for the sterling work that they do around here keeping the place as "tidy" as possible. Not an easy task when this place is the "Teenager's Bedrooom" of boards.

Yes, because everyone posting in those threads is a right wing white supremacist facist.

    Seeing as you asked...

I'd really like to see a clamp down on catch-phrasery and low or no content posts. I know this isn't SomethingAwful but I would like to see a move in the direction of discouraging such posts.

It happened with "Yore Ma" earlier this year but only after usage got really out of hand.

I know the mods have limited time and are already fighting an uphill battle in this forum. Nonetheless that would be my suggestion for how to improve AH.

    AH is fine.

You'll get good threads and bad. I like the way it's currently moderated.

Keep up the moderation, in moderation.

I think there's a good balance between weeding out the idiotic and pointless threads and nurturing the little gems so keep up the good work!

honestly, i'd take overuse of "yore ma" over yet another thread that'll end up being that same "debate" between the same people ad nauseam.

Other than that, everything is shiny.

AH is grand the way it is now. It would be nice to have image tags but then again the place would soon be overwhelmed by muppets posting cat pictures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,818 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

Yes, because everyone posting in those threads is a right wing white supremacist facist.
That wasn't my point. I couldn't give a toss if they were shipped to Timbuktu or The Moyross Barbie Fan Club. Just anywhere but here. Those threads have passed their sell by date & generally churn out the same ol' shíte again & again.

Seconded. Some of the self-abuse threads were a little tasteless but I like it here, it keeps me entertained and I like the moderators, they're not nazis at all, and Terry makes me laugh. (Did you ever notice how all of his posts are perfectly spelled and punctuated too?!)

I think it's fine, and I think one could take the number of complaints versus the number of posters as an indication of whether there really is a problem or whether the problem is that rather than finding the board for them, they want to take over AH, regardless of the regular posters.

I think it's safe to say that most of the boards populations know that AH is not the place to go to for sensitive carebear or 100% serious replies to your thread, it's somewhere where people cut loose and lay back while still keeping it fit for public viewing and without turning it into a flamefest like Cuckoo's Nest or the Thunderdome. We have debates but we also take the piss.

Nice balance and should be left alone.

I love After Hours, the way I view it is, you've got the groups, the Personal Issue heads for example, the Rocker heads, the fitness freaks, the computer geeks etc etc. Its like one big social class race and in my opinion we're in the lead! We're cool, laid back, chilled out dnt a fcuk vibe....we're workin' it babe!lol :D

So; no changes necessary...we're all good! :D

    No problems for me.

Unanimous in terms of comments so far. Feedback malcontents take note. The folk voting for some change might take the time to voice an opinion though...

Terry, Karoma, nesf et al do a fine job. The beauty of it is, they are all different people with very different opinions, and yet mod very consistently and even handedly.

Keep it up, chaps (as Ruu might say).

while this isnt a rampant white supremecist site, nor is it left wing hippy commune.
i like to think we take a pretty even keel on things, and if people want to discuss racism or animal cruelty issues, then we dont come down on people.

theres a difference between being racist, and discussing racism. i actually have little problem with any topic being discussed, as long as its within the grounds of a very lenient decency, if you know what i mean.
there are a lot of emotive feelings being bandied about from time to time, but drop kicking a topic because a lot fo people dont like it is not something ive ever been fond of. drop kicking a topic because its just out side the bounds of decorum is however.
and for any who want to have the discussion on what those bounds are, feel free to head over to the feedback forum.
right now, those bounds are the bounds of the moderators, anda rent likely to change any time soon :)

we were asked not to be so quick with the 'move' button last year, so we have slowed down. if people genuinely feel that a thread should be some where else, please report it.

otherwise, we will move whatever we feel needs to be moved. i always move the work related ones to the work forum. i dont know about the other guys.

absolutely appreciate that, and agree with it.

    but...

if i banned everyone who wriote something that annoyed me, or i felt was low brow, AH would be a very quite place.

and id have to ban myself too :)

some catch phrase are very much a part of boards history. over use is annoying, and tbh, i find that the residents here tend to moderate anyone who is annoying anyway. and of course, feel free to report anyone who you feel is constantly submitting under-contented posts. the mods will make a decision.

granted. we'll see what we can do to stop constant one word responses and stupidness, but again, were not here to moderate everyone, but to ensure the forum continues in a manner which suits everyone. and everyone is allowed a 'lol' or a 'yore ma' reponse every now and then. you want serious debating, the humanities forums frown very deeply on those types of things :)

if you see what i mean?

that isnt going to happen any time soon as far as im aware.

when i get drunk i take pictures of my penis, and that is just not a good look on the interweb at 4 in the morning :)

this is what happens when you get a high churn rate of people.

the same threads happen over and over and over again.

ive been on this site for 10 years. believe me. ive seen them all :)

however, once you start seeing the trend, people get disillusioned. they feel the place has changed, its not as much fin anymore and then they complain. hell, it happened to me.
the problem is not so much the forums, but that people change.

we cant help that. sorry :)

but once people get over the fact that other people come along, you tend to start looking at smaller amounts of forums, and ignoring other stuff etc etc etc. they tend to start enjoying themselves. AH being sucha large forum suffers greatly from this. hence the large amount of complaints we get. and its not actually our fault :(
we are to blame for the worlds ills is appears :)

if i banned everyone who wriote something that annoyed me, or i felt was low brow, AH would be a very quite place.

Maybe the new infraction system would be of help here? You wouldn't have to ban anyone for a first offence but could discourage them this way?
feel free to report anyone who you feel is constantly submitting under-contented posts. the mods will make a decision.

I don't know if it's a case of repeat offenders so much as it is the proliferation of tired catchphrases, that is everyone's doing it once so the board gets almost spammed with it at times. (Which kinda goes against what I'm saying above. Hmmm, tricky business this!).

I guess I'd like to see the community get over it's past; "Yore Ma" and "Atari Jaguar" are an important part of boards history, sure. In fact, that's exactly what they should be now that they've run their course, history; but that's not something mods can control.
you want serious debating, the humanities forums frown very deeply on those types of things :)

if you see what i mean?

I do, absolutely. The problem with Humanities is it can be a bit too humourless!

One of the reasons I'm posting in this thread is because I love the fact you can just take the piss and be completely irreverend on AH. There are some really great posters and posts on this board but they often get buried beneath an avalanche of thoughtless "me too" replies. I guess if we could discourage such posts the general level of wit and sophistication (sic.) might automatically be upped here.

The stock market is a bit turbulent at the moment and stocks in Terry inc are being severely affected by the slowdown in the economy. Those shares aren't going to increase in value any time soon. If anything I'd say set up a Terry depreciation club.

    Nonsense

The Terry Inc™ Corporation said yesterday that it expected 2008 moderation to exceed analysts' forecasts as a result of strong growth in boards.ie
particularly in its After Hours forum despite the recent sub prime lending problems in the U.S. markets.

The company forecasts earnings of $10.25 to $10.55 a share on revenue of $2.2 billion to $2.3 billion for 2008. Analysts, on average, forecast a profit of $9.45 a share on revenue of $2.15 billion.

    Terry™ is a good pick.

(The value of shares can go up as well as down, Past Performance is not necessarily an Indicator of future results.)

I think AH is great, but it should be more free flowing. Mods seem to eager to lock/delete/move any thread they think is anyway out of place.

If a mod thinks a worthless thread has been posted then it will not get many replies and will die off, so let that happen instead of presuming nobody will be interested in it.

Also bring back tags. I think AH should be a no rule forum(except for NWS, abuse and copyright material) it would make the place ten times better than what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

I don't find it clicky, people say what they want, if others disagree, they say so.

If someone says something deemed offensive by someone, they call them on it.
