This practise by some users to simply a post and add "+1" or "QFT" ... do you want it gone?

    not really.
i dont see anything wrong with it.

is this not just another small thing that gets on peoples nerves, but really, you could just pass over it without it actually needing to trouble your day?

this is AH after all. if people agree, i dont see why there should be a need to add some long reasoning behind why you agree with someone about something.

    What say you?

    really?

this is AH we are talking about remember. its not about 'raising the bar'. the bar is raised in several hundred other fora. AH doesnt need any bar raising.

unless you have some other issue on your agenda you havent mentioned yet?
    Karoma wrote: »
Not really...no. Do you really feel the need to make it known that you agree and couldn't do it without adding your own 2c on top?/QUOTE]

    actually, i do :)

i dont want to write an essay just becuase someone else feels i must. which is essentially what youre saying.

its also going to be a pain in the ass to moderate. thats the problem with rules. you have to back them up.
thats why i have implemented as few rules as possible on this forum. i know you chaps have added your own, and i let you deal with those, but i dont enforce them.

i dont have the time or the inclination to sort out rules like 'you must have an answer that is 4 words minimum in any post'.
it just seems like an absurd waste of time, and a rule made up because some people got annoyed over something pretty inconsequential.

oh, and dont forget all the feedback threads youd get with something like that. the 'my post was deleted' or 'i got banned for posting' threads, and id find it pretty hard to stand behind banning someone for that sort of decision.

but, if a lot of people feel that way, why not stick up a new thread and a poll and ask the people. if it gets implemented, then the people have only themselves to blame. you vote bertie, you get bertie :)

I'm not saying that they have to write an essay - it is AH after all, just something a little bit more substantial than a few characters and a quote. It's something that has been raised in places here and there in AH threads and Humour suffered from "lol"-attacks and one would think it's more disruptive to discussion in a general discussion forum. I'll enforce any rule that is agreed upon (With some flexibility - we're not talking instant bans), as ever.

(For clarification: "Raise the bar" = reduce noise, not necessarily implying that the signal would be improved directly, just enough for it to get through.)

To use the pub chat analogy: We're in the pub, having a discussion(About crap-let's not pretend it's anything deep) - and a handful of people just jump in with "yeah." or "me too." repeatedly in every discussion, without adding anything else... that gets pretty annoying; they obviously cannot talk over another person in the discussion but that can get in the way a bit... One obviously wouldn't have much problem with someone that does it the odd time - it's natural.

unless you have some other issue on your agenda you havent mentioned yet?
you'll know when the time is right *scuttles away - lizard style*

Did someone tell Karoma to stop power tripping? He doesnt lock/ban half as much these days.

Lifting the ban on personal abuse would weed out the tards who hide behind it as well.

ive seen it mentioned a few times, and ive mentioned it myself. but the only thing ive really ever seen happen is one of the mods went on a stupid 'yore ma' spree.
which annoyed me more than somone simply adding a 'lol' or +1 in a post.

so, to keep your analogy, youd actually tell someone in the pub to shut up just becuase you think they hadnt offered anything worthwhile other than to agree witha point you made a couple of times?

how often is too often to not offer anything worthwhile?
and again, i guess it comes back to what your definition of worthwhile is. and whether anyone else agrees with it...

    Sorry about that.
In fairness, I was doing it to prove a point.
At the time, "yore ma" had become rampant in every thread. (sorry about the wording. I'm hungover and I have a chest infection (DesF, I'm afraid it is an excuse this time. I'll get you again))
I used that account to post "yore ma" in lots of threads to show how annoying it is when it pops up all the time and I believe it worked.
Incidents of threads being swamped with "yore ma" jokes have all but died out, but AH is still going. Going stronger than ever, if you ask me. Although, that's probably more to do with the speed increase than anything else.

i actually dont think its becuase of that. :)

i think its becuase things go in circles, fads come and go, cat pictures get replaces by mannities, etc etc.

AH keeps going becuase its a good place to post a load of bollocks, we dont ahve a load of rules and we dont get overly upset at the use of 'yore ma' :)

talking about having to post substantial replies is daft when most of the threads are about which way you wipe your arse or what colour turd you dropped this morning.

    QFT tbh

i cant help. i agree with the sentiment. what more should i type to make this post more 'substantial'?

dont get me wrong on this, i like the debate and i like the feedback, its all good.
oh, and just because i question the suggestions made, doesnt mean that something wont get implemented. im only debating the subjects people bring up :)

Then I press down harder on their throats with my boots. Seriously, going around in circles: "substantial" is anything more than "QFT" or "+1". If someone feels compelled enough to make it clear that they do agree with the previous poster, they type words (Not l33tspeak, not txtspk, not silly abbreviations) and who know: maybe, just maybe, it'll occurr to them to append another sentiment or thought to the post?

The pub analogy: Personally? I'm a prick - I cannot say for definite that I wouldn't insult them or tell them to shut up. I might not tell them to shut up, if they were saying something worthwhile; however, I may also be less inclined to listen to them.

"Raise the bar" => To get us away from threads that have a 'yore ma' or 'qft' and the counter-attacks / requests by others to stop posting it = 3 or 4 posts in a thread that adds very little to the discussion - i.e. it does not progress. QFT and +1 get fewer complaints and are in-context so it's excusable. We let the 'yore ma' thing slide when it is actually in-context and not spammed everywhere.
When is it too much? When we actually notice a particular poster using it (in every fourth thread or more (And subsequent searching and checking as usual to confirm it.) if you insist on some inane quantity. I'm not talking a hard-and-fast rule just a guideline to deal with posters that fluff threads for the sake of it, or drag up old threads to do it...OK,that one I want to be ban for:) )

I have no problem with the questioning of it - I questioned it before posting the suggestion, and am still questioning it. The suggestion was thrown to the floor because of the number of posts I've encountered complaining about it, mostly. I was swayed by one or two uses of it that to take a dim view of it(Dragging up an old thread to simply post "+1").
If this doesn't bug you? Then, screw you and yore normality and yore better-things-to-do life.

i only ask becuase i know theres going to be a day when you ban someone for saying +1.

and they will complain. and you will say, yeah, well i read it 30 times today.
and they will say, i only used ti once, why ban me?

you mentioned something 'substantial'. im asking yu to quantiy it, because if you put it in rules, you know it will get technical. sorry, i know it will get technical.

Like all those other times I've banned people for that once-off minor offense... Yeah.
you mentioned something 'substantial'. im asking yu to quantiy it, because if you put it in rules, you know it will get technical. sorry, i know it will get technical.
Thank goodness you're here or we would have fallen into that trap! I should probably read Feedback or deal with PM's from users or something from time to time... Nah. I'll just continue to ban and ignore. -_-

Of course we get tits that argue semantics and technicalities - firstly, they shouldn't be indulged. Secondly, again: I'm not talking dishing out bans for someone that uses it the odd time, just for the people that use it enough times for it to get annoying. Apply your 'common sense' rule here. I do have some, umkay?
like i said, stick up a poll and find out.
I may do. I wanted to see whether there was any strong feelings about it (I don't have any) by more than the one or two people that have voiced dissatisfaction already before creating threadwaste.
indeed. perhaps you need to step away from the AH forum for a while if it really gets you that riled up?
:D:):):D:) <- maybe I should use these more often, lest we find ourselves using too many words or braincells.

    +1

Sometimes you have an opinion on something and find that someone else has posted it, or there's a point you think is important and you want to highlight it and concur with it and you don't have anything more to add beyond your agreement with the poster you're quoting. If all a poster ever does is quote people and say "+1", sure that might need fixing but I think that sometimes such posts work very well within the context of the thread.

That, and getting rid of +1's and lol's isn't going to improve the signal to noise ratio really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,786 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

The stn is always going to be high, across boards in general. To reduce it would need some sort of 24 hour robot super mod. which wouldn't work. AH is fun, with a twist of responsibilty. Its become less silly now, all in all you guys do good woork, especially when you consider the traffic you get.

    Yup

Since when do you get a warning or wherever it is for any use of yore ma.

Since when does a mod decide when we can start talking about Christmas.

Thread closed discussing a site in France that successfully showed it wasn't responsible for the posts by it's users.

The only question is Terry or Karoma for police chief?
