I'm in Taiwan on holidays and to my surprise saw PS3 on sale in a few computer stores. Allowing for currency conversion it worked out at around 580 euro. I know its an NTSC 110V system but i could run it in Ireland. Is the PS3 really that good? Would you buy it if you had the chance??? Tia

Thats cheaper than the planned Irish price, the thing that would put me off though is that you could get home to discover its faulty and you won't be able to just take it back to the shop.

If it was faulty i could send it to my girlfriend and she would bring it back to the shop for me ;)

Yea PS3 games are completely region free, although the hardware knows what region it is which means it's not impossible for region locking to get implemented in future. Sony have said it's region free repeatedly though and that promise has been kept on every game on the system so far.

PS2 games and Blu Ray movies are region locked though so you might run into trouble there. For Blu Ray, Taiwan is the same region as the US so you can always get films from there. I've no idea what region they come under for PS2 games.

You could just send it to Son Ireland and they'd hook you up.

    bought from america

The HDMI cable does not come in the box, you have to buy 1, you should be able to get 1 cheap on ebay. you could get Resistance from dvdboxoffice, videogamesplus(cheap shipping) or yesasia. I have only used videogamesplus, they are very reliable and very quick shipping usualy. I will be ordering some Blu-Ray movies from dvdboxoffice during the week and will let you know if they are any good. I also have a PS3 on its way from ebay, cost me €620 inc Tony Hawks an extra controler and delivery.

Not a far as I know, I'v read on av forums that it is multi voltage and all you need is a standard lead like you would find on a kettle or something. The same as with import PSPs. Let me know what your tag is when you set it up and we can hopefully have a few games of Resistance. What other games are you getting?

All Jap and US PS3s so far contain multi-voltage supplies......the only cable you need is an IEC lead (Kettle)/ PC lead, stick a 3amp fuse in it and that'll be enough.
Any HDMI cable will do.......expensive HDMI cables only come into when dealing with exorbitant lengths with 1080p, most of the population will make do with a cheap 1-2m cable.
Games wise there's not too much to choose from....RR7 (if you're a fan), Resistance (if you like COD, nice game), Motorstorm (if you can get it cheap, excellent title, even with its lack of options), Tekken DR (awesome value, but only from the Jap/HK PS Store so far.....1080p/60fps fighting for about €12-13)........rest of the titles are typical launch fare..

    got fall of man

was going to get motorstorm but i see its only jap version out right not so the language is japanese

it says on a powerseller ad on ebay

'LANGUAGE - JAPANESE (WILL NOT CONVERT TO ENGLISH IF PLAYED ON AN AMERICAN PS3'

    is that strange ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,788 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Some Japanese on ticket (race point screen), but nothing to interfere with the gameplay..
    R2 Accel
    L2 Brake
    X Boost
    Square Horn/Hit
Thats all you need to play the game..
If Multiplayer is included in a patch for the Jap version later next year, you may run into issues then, but by then the US version with online play will be out

Sooo tempted, but going to wait see how it goes first.

Gran Turismo HD looks sweet, and the Fight Night 2006/7.

picked a 60gb up in LA a couple of days ago for $599 + about $30 tax i think (about €470?). plugged it in back at the hotel to make sure it was working & it was fine, so just packed it back up and brought it home as carry on luggage.

No problems going through the multiple security checks at LAX & Heathrow (once i explained to the xray screeners that it was a games console still in its box). Nobody at Dublin airport customs to even look at us.

Plugged it in at home last night and it works fine, although it doesn't come with hdmi, component or optical cables, just ****ty composite for 480p. Hooked it up to my HDMI & got no picture, which was a bit of a shock until i realised you need to use the composite lead to switch to HDMI & also need to specify optical out for audio.

Had to use a fake US address to register with the playstation store (otherwise you get a "not available until playstation launches in your region" message) - i used Los Angeles 90210. From there, I downloaded the MotorStorm (400mb) & Gran Turismo: HD demos (625mb) and they're pretty great, going to try Resistance now...
