I'm in Taiwan on holidays and to my surprise saw PS3 on sale in a few computer stores. Allowing for currency conversion it worked out at around 580 euro. I know its an NTSC 110V system but i could run it in Ireland. Is the PS3 really that good? Would you buy it if you had the chance??? Tia

Thats cheaper than the planned Irish price, the thing that would put me off though is that you could get home to discover its faulty and you won't be able to just take it back to the shop.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 847 ✭✭✭mickger

If it was faulty i could send it to my girlfriend and she would bring it back to the shop for me ;)

As an update to this was in another store today and the full package with 60gig hard drive was 430 euro  Would i be able to play any region game on it i wonder?? Its an amazing deal at the price.

Yea PS3 games are completely region free, although the hardware knows what region it is which means it's not impossible for region locking to get implemented in future. Sony have said it's region free repeatedly though and that promise has been kept on every game on the system so far.

PS2 games and Blu Ray movies are region locked though so you might run into trouble there. For Blu Ray, Taiwan is the same region as the US so you can always get films from there. I've no idea what region they come under for PS2 games.

You could just send it to Son Ireland and they'd hook you up.

    ebay

    bought from america

any place to buy Resistance: Fall of Man besides ebay, any where with free shipping worldwide

does the ps3 support hdmi cable and is it included in the 60gb box

The HDMI cable does not come in the box, you have to buy 1, you should be able to get 1 cheap on ebay. you could get Resistance from dvdboxoffice, videogamesplus(cheap shipping) or yesasia. I have only used videogamesplus, they are very reliable and very quick shipping usualy. I will be ordering some Blu-Ray movies from dvdboxoffice during the week and will let you know if they are any good. I also have a PS3 on its way from ebay, cost me €620 inc Tony Hawks an extra controler and delivery.

Not a far as I know, I'v read on av forums that it is multi voltage and all you need is a standard lead like you would find on a kettle or something. The same as with import PSPs. Let me know what your tag is when you set it up and we can hopefully have a few games of Resistance. What other games are you getting?

All Jap and US PS3s so far contain multi-voltage supplies......the only cable you need is an IEC lead (Kettle)/ PC lead, stick a 3amp fuse in it and that'll be enough.
Any HDMI cable will do.......expensive HDMI cables only come into when dealing with exorbitant lengths with 1080p, most of the population will make do with a cheap 1-2m cable.
Games wise there's not too much to choose from....RR7 (if you're a fan), Resistance (if you like COD, nice game), Motorstorm (if you can get it cheap, excellent title, even with its lack of options), Tekken DR (awesome value, but only from the Jap/HK PS Store so far.....1080p/60fps fighting for about €12-13)........rest of the titles are typical launch fare..

    got fall of man

was going to get motorstorm but i see its only jap version out right not so the language is japanese

it says on a powerseller ad on ebay

'LANGUAGE - JAPANESE (WILL NOT CONVERT TO ENGLISH IF PLAYED ON AN AMERICAN PS3'

    is that strange ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,490 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Some Japanese on ticket (race point screen), but nothing to interfere with the gameplay..
    R2 Accel
    L2 Brake
    X Boost
    Square Horn/Hit
Thats all you need to play the game..
If Multiplayer is included in a patch for the Jap version later next year, you may run into issues then, but by then the US version with online play will be out

Sooo tempted, but going to wait see how it goes first.

Gran Turismo HD looks sweet, and the Fight Night 2006/7.

picked a 60gb up in LA a couple of days ago for $599 + about $30 tax i think (about €470?). plugged it in back at the hotel to make sure it was working & it was fine, so just packed it back up and brought it home as carry on luggage.

No problems going through the multiple security checks at LAX & Heathrow (once i explained to the xray screeners that it was a games console still in its box). Nobody at Dublin airport customs to even look at us.

Plugged it in at home last night and it works fine, although it doesn't come with hdmi, component or optical cables, just ****ty composite for 480p. Hooked it up to my HDMI & got no picture, which was a bit of a shock until i realised you need to use the composite lead to switch to HDMI & also need to specify optical out for audio.

Had to use a fake US address to register with the playstation store (otherwise you get a "not available until playstation launches in your region" message) - i used Los Angeles 90210. From there, I downloaded the MotorStorm (400mb) & Gran Turismo: HD demos (625mb) and they're pretty great, going to try Resistance now...

Have had a Jap 60gb since end of November.......primarily bought it as a Blu-ray player. Excellent playback, easily compares with a standalone Panasonic and much better than the Samsung. Hooked upto a Sony X Series so 1080p isn't a problem so I haven't ran into the various issues you hear about BD playback/games reverting to lesser quality. Looks fantastic on a 720p projector as well, although you are stuck at 1080i BD playback on that.
Audio is excellent, full lossless sound over a HDMI amp, but even optical is OK for most people.
Picked up RR7 and Resistance with the system......RR7 is exactly what you'd expect, but it sure does look pretty (probably not worth it if you've got RR6 on 360 though).
Resistance is excellent, much preferred to the overrated Gears of War. If you enjoy Call of Duty, you'll like Fall of Man, although it does take an hour for it to get going. On later stages there is so much going on with upto 30 enemies on screen at the same time, you'll forgive the slightly PC look to the game.
Got Motorstorm as well the week before Christmas, even in its limited state compared to the forthcoming US/Euro version, its well worth it, especially for only 40 blips. There is a real next-gen feel to the game while racing, and it has impressed me more than other PS3/360 games, even more than the recent GTHD Concept demo. Addictive racer and on later stages the computer AI is very tough and demanding. If multiplayer is implemented well in the US release, it could be one of the best experiences to be had online.
All games so far are region-free, but it will be down to publishers in the end despite the region-free stance from Sony, so just be aware.
For 2-player, the recent Tekken DR download on the PS Store is awesome and at a stunning price.

No issues with the machine so far, so touchwood. But there have been cases on people importing machines and running into a few problems, in much the same way some people had with the 360 a year ago, although is doesn't appear as widespread.

Enjoy........the only thing is, I couldn't recommend the console to anybody primarily on games alone due to the high cost of the machine, but if you're looking for an all-in-one high-end BD player/eventually great games machine, its worth it..

If you haven't got a comp lead or whatever, plug in the HDMI lead, and hold in the power button for 5 secs or so until it beeps, and it should revert to the basic setup and run through the Video/Audio setup..

It doesn't matter if its marked as a gift, they still get charged customs on something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭dor83

ciaran is right. the only way to avoid customs is to mislable it and i didnt want to coz if it gets lost u only get the value marked on the item and for me that was too big a risk. my psn id is dor83us if anybody wants to add me. i should have resistance and nba 2K6 next week.

to have the best graffics you'd need a high HD tv
they use blue ray discs that only work on your console, so you cant trade in a game or buy second hand ones
they are ridiculously over priced(games and the console)
the xbox 360 looks better imo

I already have a HDTV, and its the same with the 360.
they use blue ray discs that only work on your console, so you cant trade in a game or buy second hand ones
That was a rumour that went around a long time ago and is not true, some sites have already been selling second hand games.
they are ridiculously over priced(games and the console)
i bought a premium 360 at launch with a wireless network adapter, extra controler, play and charge kit and 1 game which cost me €655. thats not much of a differance to what i paid for my ps3 with all the same stuff and that can be put down to the extra 40gb of hard drive space. Games on ps3 can be got cheap online, much like the region free 360 games can.
the xbox 360 looks better imo
That is a matter of opinion.
