For a long time, I've skimmed the surface of Reddit as an anoymous passer-by, usually coz Google sent me there in response to a technical query.

A couple of weeks ago, I discovered they had a niche within one of my niche interests, and a particular (constructive) post prompted me to sign up … which essentially served only to confirm my preconceptions. I'm not in any of the contentious hate-filled swamps, but as already mentioned by others, it does seem to be populated largely by people who can't be bothered to use a search engine, ask the same simplistic question that's been asked and answered a hundred times already, and just about every thread fizzles out within 72 hours.

The variation on "local rules" for different sub-reddits is a pain in the hole, too.
