After a hiatus of I'd say 5 or 6 years I had forgotten the reasons I stopped cutting turf and chanced 1 bin this year. It's footed this 3 weeks and I'm sorry I didn't take another bin or 2 but it is what it is. I'd be hoping if the weather stays favourable to have it home in the coming weeks. It was in right order last week considering the amount of rain that fell and I'm think the drying since will crown it.

    When was that cut ?

Ours was cut last Saturday so should be a right good skin in it after this week's weather.

For those of us not familiar with harvesting turf, how is turf cut and then footed.

Well mine is cut with what we call the "sausage" machine. Blades cut it and bring it up from just under the bog surface and lays it out in 6 lines per row. While wet we nick them into about 12 to 18 inch lengths to make them easier to break when lifting. Then leave them for about a week if the weather is good and stand them up (foot them) in a tepee shape of 4 / 5 / 6 turf together.

As the turf dry out we put them together in bigger piles (my father in law calls this rickling). When they are dry enough we bag them up and quad them to the road or if the ground is handy enough to the road they go straight onto a trailer and home.

Ive just finished footing this years. Hoping this weather lasts and there's a good breeze to dry them out and get them home soon.

Thanks for that. I thought footing was digging out with a Slean, didn't understand where cutting turf bit came from.

Some turf wisdom from the bog elders I cut with (Im still an apprentice apparently 😄)

    1. Always move your turf to higher ground.

    2. Never face your bag openings up hill. They'll fill up with rain.

    3. I dont care if it rains bullets. We're going to the bog!

Turf cutting here would be like this video. Excavator into machine for spreading. Each spread is called a hopper which is 10sods wide, each hopper is about 80 to 90 yards long.

Dont turn turf anymore, box foot it and then home. I don't burn fresh turf. Use last year's turf this year, this year's turf next year.

I'm spreading the last of my turf today, the weather has not been helpful at all.

I see bogs cut here that haven't been cut in a long time, a sign of the times.
