Really enjoying Ape Out. Simple gameplay, frenetic pace, great music. Not a lot of depth to it but the High Rise sequence of levels - breaking out down through floor after floor of a skyscraper - is pure joy.

On the other end of the scale, fired up the Witcher 3, also on the Switch 2. I think I only played a few hours of it 5 years ago (according to the transferred save data) but I started again from scratch and am very impressed. I don't know if it's the Switch 2 upgrade or the fact that I might have been suffering Skyrim and other open-world fatigue back then, but it's grabbed me this time around. I can see myself putting a fair few hours in, especially as all the DLC is included. I had been thinking about picking up Cyberpunk but this will tide me over for a while I think.

I've been playing the Rogue Prince of Persia for a week and it's fantastic. Every run unlocks something so you always feel like you're making progress. The meta progression is spot on.

The Prince of Persia platforming is excellent. You get into a real flow state when you master it, and the combat fits in nicely. The game is just FUN.

If you get it and you're playing handheld, use headphones. It has a brilliant Persian EDM soundtrack.

Love this game, get it. 🙂

Have it via Gamepass and Plus so must give it a shot.

Octopath Traveller O. Got it for Christmas with Donkey Kong and Metroid Prime 4. I just can't stop playing it above the other two. You know a game is good as when I was playing DK and MP4 all I was thinking of was going back To Octopath. Maybe because it is more in-depth strategy wise RPG. I think the 2d art style looks so good on S2. Great Game.

I also must pick up Rogue Prince of Persia, I see it's on special offer on the store. Mr E does it matter if you have not played the previous games.

@Longing not at all. Most PoP games are standalone (apart from the 3D games 20 years ago).

And PoP Lost Crown is a really good game if you want a good metroidvania.

All PoP games I've played since Sands, I've really enjoyed.

Finished Bravely Default Flying Fairy just before Christmas and loved it. Whizzed through the demo for Trails beyond the Horizon (can't wait) and played four-player Mario Kart World on St. Stephen's Day. Interestingly we were all pretty bored of it after less than an hour which tells you a lot about the game compared to MK8.

Currently playing Octopath Traveler 0 and it is as wonderful as I anticipated. For those yet to start, there are bonuses for having played the previous games (even the demos) as well as DQ I & II, III and Bravely Default Flying Fairy.

About 6-7 hours into Cyberpunk 2077 and a bit surprised; having just (finally) played through the Witcher 3, I was expecting more of the same but in a sci-fi setting. Instead, I'm getting much more GTA vibes off it. Not quite what I was expecting but happy to give it a go.

Another few Switch 2 games also came into the house over Christmas:

Pokemon Legends Z-A. My kids love it and rate it pretty highly among recent efforts. I was surprised by how quickly they finished the main game but like many of the other iterations, they're happy to mess around in the world afterwards, seemingly endlessly, collecting rare or specific pokemon, etc.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Playing through this with my daughter, like we did with the previous Hyrule Warriors games. Mostly more of the same - if you liked previous Warriors games, you'll like this. We loved the plot/story in Age of Calamity and this definitely isn't as strong, but partly that's down to more-or-less knowing the story already, unlike Calamity, which went off in mad directions.

Hades. Picked up in the sale after considering for a long time. Nice dialogue/voice acting, and good for short burst game playing but really not sure if rogue-likes are for me…

Playing Hades as well at the moment for the first time. 26 runs to complete first play through but not sure if I can be arsed playing anymore run through,, don't think rogue likes are for me either.

Bit of a mix between Grid:Autosport, No Mans Sky and Stray.

Just got Metroid 4 but waiting for an evening with the big tv, a nice fire and a nicer bottle of red to appreciate it properly.

Finished Metroid Prime 4 last night. There's the makings of an all time classic in there but surrounded by some really frustrating design choices. Stuff like the open desert and the item/energy hunt near the end are most likely artefacts of the troubled development of the game.

The actual gameplay within the levels is still top notch with some of the new skills adding a lot to the experience. It also runs and looks amazing on Switch 2 with the ice level being particularly stunning.

Well worth a play through but would maybe go 8/10 overall due to some of the aspects of the design.

Ball X Pit has its claws in me at the moment. I have 6 areas unlocked with 2 to go (I think). New DLC next week too.

I got MIO Memories in Orbit before launch to get the 10% discount, so I think that's next. Must get back to DK Bananza too, I'm only about 70% through that.

The rest of Silk Song is waving at me from a distance too. Need to get through Act 3 before the DLC comes out.

What red goes well with a metroid and how would it differ from a zelda red? Less hints of hearty truffle and restless cricket?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,809 ✭✭✭smokingman

Ah Xofpod, the darkest red to create a pleasing contrast to the brightest red on Samus' suit 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,790 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I was having real difficulty getting into Mio Memories in Orbit. Just didn't click with me. Everyone is raving about how good it is too.

Then I found the accessibility options and I'm enjoying it much more now. There is an option that weakens bosses after losing to them. An option that gives you an extra shield if you stand still for 5 seconds (amazing for tough platforming sections). And an option that makes it so enemies only attack if you attack them first. It's still a really good challenge, but more manageable for me now. 😂

Playing Pokopia and it's honestly very very good if you like cosy games with village management, life sim, crafting and all that. Find it's way better than Animal Crossing - which I find way too slow making you wait too many real-world days to get stuff done. Pokopia has really only had one of those events where I needed to wait until tomorrow.

Playing Minishoot Adventures and absolutely loving it. It's a bullet-hell top-down Zelda game. 😊

When I finish it, I may very well start over on hard mode (I love it that much).

Played the demo of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined and really enjoyed it so ended up picking up the full game. Probably a little too much hand-holding if you're a seasoned JRPG player but suits me at this stage of life.

Shows how useful a demo is though. Would never have picked it up otherwise. It would be great to see more of them. Or even a default 1hr trial on any game

Playing Silksong and stuck on a boss (#@&#ing Sister Splinter) for longer than I reckon I've ever been stuck on something in a game. I'm sticking with it cos I really like the game (and loved Hollow Knight) and even when I'm getting slaughtered, I love its move set and its speed. But - it does seem like only a matter of time before the controller goes through the TV screen…

I'm also choosing to believe that this is some weird aberration and that I'll sail through all subsequent bosses…

I think you're still a bit short of the first major 'skill check' boss (which sits at the climax of act one), but it's one of those games where different players will definitely hit walls with different bosses. Having played through the full game and post game, everything I've read and heard is that outside a few particuarly tricky fights everyone will have their own unique bosses that drive them up the wall. Some bosses I heard complaints about I found relatively straightforward, others I heard little about I found very difficult.

You will need patience and practice though - definitely a couple fights that took me a few dozen tries to finally get over the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,790 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Sister Splinter and The Last Judge only took me a few attempts.

Lace #2 was my first controller-through-the-screen boss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭Xofpod

Cheers, but way beyond the few dozen tries by this stage. Possibly into the complete mental block stage now BUT I did realise that I was missing an available silk skill which will without a doubt make the whole thing ridiculously easy this evening.

What the hell is she even supposed to be anyway, some sort of stick insect or spider? Stupid f%#$ing game, mutter, mutter,…

Playing Deadzone:Rogue and it's a hell of a lot of fun, especially in co-op

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,790 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Played a few hours of that over the weekend and it's great. Music is cool too.

    I've only played solo.

Beat her, moved on with my life, nothing to see here.

I bought a Switch with a heap of games I've never really played/heard of. Playing Breath of the Kingdom, no idea what I'm at, it's a big janky and bland but I am enjoying just mooching around the world and doing those 60 second shrines. The time just flew. Will Google some guides to see about weapons and cooking. Weapons seem to break after about 10 hits.

Played the demo for Metroid Dread and loved it, will be picking the game up soon but decided to take advantage of the NSO classics library first and have just beaten Metroid: Zero Mission this week.

Continuing my GBA journey with Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga next.
