That wouldn't fully solve the issue. A quadrant must be drawn in the corner section, say 5 yards in radius, and players can only stay with the ball in that area 5 seconds. Best I could come up with!

Would be almost impossible to officiate that. If they can get into the corner from open play, I don't think there's much that can be done.

But banning short corners (nobody but the taker allowed the existing markers, or even extend those markers out) would go a long way to limit it.

I don't think it's that big of a deal to be honest but I get the frustration with people shielding the ball in the corner at the end of the game

In general though I wouldn't want to put restrictions on general play in the corners, or the tactical option of being able to take short corners, just to deal with that shielding. It's like taking a sledgehammer to a nail.

For me I think what we're talking about is timewasting while the ball is in play, and (AFAIK) the only situation currently handling this in the rules is when the goalkeeper holds onto the ball for too many seconds - currently punished with a corner kick

I'd apply the same here, take the short corner all you like but the ball has to reasonably get played into general play within the same 8 seconds (or whatever the time is for keepers holding onto the ball) otherwise a goal kick given

9 times out of 10 the ball is cleared, kicked out of play, or free kick given within 8 seconds anyway

Time wasting with the ball in play is part of the game. You have 90 minutes to win a game. If you're moaning about lads 1-0 up taking a short corner near the end of the game then maybe you should direct your frustrations at your own team who just aren't good enough.

That's not timewasting. The ball is in play, it's up to the defender to make you play the ball. What happens if a guy gets the ball on the half way line and just casually strolls around with the ball? Do you give the other team a corner?

Obstruction by defenders near the line as they try to block a player to let the ball run over the line for a goal kick.

It's absolutely timewasting. Why else are they doing it?

New rules announced for the world cup. Main points are countdown clock for both goal kicks and throw ins. VAR expanded to overturn second bookings if incorrect.

Recently the refs seem to have stopped penalising players for preventing quick free kicks and not forcing them to move back 10 yards, unless it's being lined up for a shot on goal. The pulling and dragging in the box during corners is also now at ridiculous levels. Just implementing the current rules would be great.
