What rules/laws would you introduce or change? I'm going to list some that a few friends of mine mentioned on WhatsApp recently (I don't agree with them all 🙂)

    • You can kick a throw in if it's in your own half
    • If you're team concedes a corner/free kick you can't pick up the ball and hold on to it to waste time
    • Introduce sin bin or forced substitutions for cynical fouls that stop a counter attack
    • Captains can have 2 decision challenges like in tennis
    • No offsides in the 6 yard box if the pass was played within the penalty area
    • Simplify the handball rule, especially for penalties
    • Substitutes when warming up must be a minimum of 10 yards away from the ball when it's a throw in or corner kick
    • Refs should be mic'd up when anything goes to VAR or the side of pitch monitor
    • More strict penalising of jersey pulling, grabbing and pushing for corners or when someone is running down the clock in the corner
    • Stop the clock in added on time if someone is injured or wasting time
    • No rebounds after penalties

    Anything else?

Seeing as we are probably stuck with VAR introduce an indirect free for accidental handball. The current situation is totally unfair on defenders.

    Time time time.

Time limit on throw ins, corners, free kicks enforced on goalkeepers. Bans for feigning injury.

VAR should have more authority like in rugby and we should be hearing them clearly explain what's happening. So I guess mic up refs.

Get rid of the single referee - they can’t cope. Umpires in each half alongside a ref that communicates the decisions to the crowd.
In game VAR for everything - a foul is a foul is a foul, call play back to the point of the foul - for everything. 5 fouls and the player is sin binned for 15mins and the offending team is down to 10.
Get rid of offside - be some crack that.

Have an alternative to a penalty for minor, inconsequential offences in the box.

Citings, like rugby, but particularly for simulation.

Red card for diving in opposition penalty box.

Bring is back to be a deliberate handball, the ball being kicked and hitting a players hand or an unfortunate bounce should not be a penalty. Stop the clock for injuries, free kicks etc. a red card for diving in the box

A 60min clock. Each game last 60min of actual play.

    My top 3

    1. No referees from neighbouring towns/cities and no overseas jollys for referees to officiate under questionable circumstances in the Middle East.

    2. Managers only allowed in the stands and not on pitch.

    3. Goalies can only be in possession of the ball for 5 seconds. If you save it, you need to boot it within 5, whether you go down or not. The same applies for any frees or goal kicks won. From the instant the whistle goes or the flag goes up, it's 5 seconds - even if that means booting it from somewhere less than perfect.

    Enforce the current rules.

That would solve 99% of problems in the game.

Change the offside “interfering with play” rule.

If you are offside then you are interfering with play as the defenders are trying to play you offside regardless of what players are onside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 693 ✭✭✭Dtoffee

Abolish the offside rule, open up the game and lets see more goals….. it would have the added bonus of removing the VAR line drawing waste of time. The game has become compacted into a third of the pitch as all the players move up and down in unison, no offside means more space and the most skillful players shine.

VAR makes the final call, none of this bullsh.. of VAR can’t decide so pawn it back to the ref to decide. Would take the pressure off the referees too as players know the ref can’t overrule or decide and might prevent crowds of players gathering around referees.

Handball rule needs to change, some of the people deciding on handball must never have tried to jump or run in their life, you can’t jump or move properly with your hands by your sides or if it takes a deflection.

Offside is offside, like others have said none of this contentious interfering with play… a keeper in the heat of the moment isn’t thinking ok that player may be offside so I won’t dive, instinct is that the player will make an attempt at the ball and keeper will usually react accordingly.

For offside I would change it to if any part of your body (that you can score with) is in line with the last defender than its onside.

This isn't to make the tight calls easier (there will be contentious decisions no matter where the line is drawn) it's just to give some more advantage to the attacker.

I'm not a football historian but my understanding is the rule was introduced to stop players standing up with the goalie and having the ball hoofed to him from his defenders.

With the introduction of VAR, seeing offsides get called for a shoulder or toe offside just feels wrong.

    Simulation needs to be penalised.

This can be done retrospectly - where possilbe - and should include heavy bans.

Not enough to hurt players in the pocket as most wouldn't be bothered paying fines

The amount of diving/simulation you see at underage training is ridiculous. I'd be interested in knowing how many games are/have been decided by simulation (ie cheating).

My number 1 rule change would be if the game is stopped either by the referee or someone putting the ball out of play because a player is down injured, then that player should have to go off the pitch until the referee waves them back on

Fouling/sandwiching Keepers at corners needs to be clamped down on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,633 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Keepers have always been over protected. This isn't needed

The MLS was supposed to be doing this. If the physio is required = off field for at least 2 minutes. So a fake injury leaves the team down to 10 men for 2 minutes or the "injured" player is immediately subbed off to keep it 11v11. Managers would get sick enough of having 10 men or wasting subs that players would have to cop on or get dropped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,633 ✭✭✭✭8-10

2mins is good, but I mean in instances where the physio isn't required as well

The ball gets put out or ref stops play and less than half of the time is medical treatment coming on the pitch. Most of the time the ref goes over and the player makes a miraculous recovery and plays on.

I'm saying that regardless of physio coming on or not - if they game is stopped because you're down, then you should have to go off the pitch. And I'd fully support the 2mins rule for that, means the 4th official can just time it and let him back on and let the ref know through the mic instead of the ref having to figure out when to wave him back which is usually 10 seconds later

No offside except in the box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,633 ✭✭✭✭8-10

wouldnt thay just lead to players standing on the goalline at either side of the box ready to run in? Are you thinking like a square ball in Gaelic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,298 ✭✭✭blackbox

It would allow players to run down the wing ahead of the ball so they could receive a pass that they could cross towards the goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,781 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

*Stop the clock when the ball isn't in play.

*Bring it back to 3 substitutes.

*15 minutes sin bin for orange card. (Delivered after a first yellow, but not serious enough to be sent off for - like kicking the ball away, or another non dangerous foul)

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭Musicrules

Allow players to catch the ball and kick it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,633 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I'd like to see goalline technology extended to be real time for anytime the ball goes outside the boundary so even for a throw or corner/goal kick it's judged by technology of a chip in the ball or whatever

Then, when it's on the sideline, a metre of the sideline is highlighted (think like the lights you have on athletics tracks in the diamond league for pacing) where the ball went out of play, so the throw in has to happen within that 1 metre. If ball retrieval is improved you could also have the line start to blink when the time to take the throw is about to expire, you get say 6 seconds after the ball is in your hand or something

    Fully objective and fair

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,759 ✭✭✭Pauliedragon

I agree with the orange card in principle but yellow and red cards already cause enough arguments bringing in a new card just makes it more confusing therefore more arguments. The game needs to be more simplified not more complicated.

I feel offside should always favour the attacking team (apart from interfering with play which i think should be done away with and offside is offside) - I'd like to see it simplified to being just from feet though. It should make it easier and quicker and get rid of these protracted VAR episodes.

I'd love to see something done somehow for simulation. There will always be those borderline ones that go either way which would make it difficult.
