    I actually couldn't believe this week we were at an international break again..
    Surely these can be bundled more together to avoid this stop-start every few weeks

    If Robertson was standing offside in the corner of the box away from the play then I'd agree. Or up by the corner flag.

    But he was standing in the path of the ball and had to duck to get out of the way.
    He was right in the middle of it. It's his own fault it was called offside.

    If you are in the path of the ball then it's fair game to call offside as your presence does play a part. The keeper has to factor in the player in his thought process and actions.

    The law needs to be written to be more clear on the above. But I don't think there is any issues ruling out that goal.

    But Akanji was standing in the path of the ball for Aké's goal against Fulham right?

    I don't see the difference (other than proximity to the keeper)

    Akanji still has to jump out of the way (actually looks like he's trying to kick) so it's still an "obvious action" taken by a player in the path of the ball while in an offside position directly in front of goal?

    Was also Michael Oliver

    Yeah I'd have no issue with that being ruled out as well

    I'd rule out any goal where there's a player in an offside position

    That might be a bit much I think the offside rule changed for the better back in the day.

    Keep is simple, if you are offside in the six yard box and a goal is scored it's ruled out for offside.

    No line of sight. No interfering with the keeper etc.. Less "subjective"

    There's a clearly defined box there.

    I'm sure I heard there's a 3 week break in September next season.

    Yeah but as I say that still allows the Aké goal to stand that you said you'd have no issue with being ruled out

    I'm saying I think that's offside too. He shouldn't be standing there

    You'd also still have VAR getting involved to determine whether he's over the line or on the line of the 6 yard box at the exact moment the ball leaves the attackers foot

    Take the Llorente goal against Liverpool this season on the stroke of halftime, was that offside or not? Attacker is very close to the 6 yard box line

    Halfway through this clip (2:55)

    Like if this is fine wouldn't you just leave a forward lodging 7 yards out in front of the keeper at all times when you're attacking?

    There is talk of merging the Sep/Oct break into 3 weeks I think. Some people will just complain that 3 weeks without club football is too long. There's no solution that'll keep everyone happy

    Push back the start of the season and play those games before it starts?

    They are just placed at very awkward points now. Transfer window shuts and if your club made a deadline day signing he's likely off with his national team for 2 weeks before you get to see them play.

    Then the breaks in October and November are very close together. PL clubs have played 11 games and there's been 3 international breaks. It's a bit much.

    That was interesting. VAR states

    image.png

    Its these inconsistencies that are killing it. Interestingly, in this, and the other two decisions mentioned this week, the same team has benefitted each time!

    Its official

    image.png

    That first window is only 15 days, but that does take in 3 weekends, as its Tuesday to Tuesday.

    Yeah they seem to say something about him making a full length save, suggesting that he was already diving and it wasn't like Akanji being there affected him - like he didn't hesitate to dive or start going in one direction then stopping or anything - whether he's there or not he makes the same dive

    But that seems to be the case with Donnarumma. He dived full length too and didn't seem to hesitate

    There's more audio in that clip saying he made an obvious action, but questioning if it clearly impacts him or not

    Offside;

    • The player has to be fully ahead of the final outfield defender to be offside.
    • Goalkeepers don't come into consideration for offside.
    • No offside until the edge of the penalty box.

    VAR;

    • Each team is given 3 challenges per game, no more than two per half.
    • A challenge cannot extend further than 20 seconds before an incident (goal scored/penalty given/handball/card issued).
    • 60 Seconds maximum to review the challenge when the ref goes to the screen. At 60 seconds the referee must make a decision.

    Throws/corners/goal kicks;

    • One the ball goes out of bounds, a team has 25 seconds to put the ball into play again.
    • Failure to do so sees the dead ball reversed (throw goes to the other team, goal kick becomes a corner, corner becomes a goal kick)

    Time Wasting/Feigning Injury;

    • Any player that lies on the ground for more than 20 seconds has to leave the field for a minimum of 90 seconds for medical review.
    • The time of the review starts when the player crosses the line to leave the field, and the player cannot return until the ball goes out of play after the two minutes are up.
    • The player cannot be substituted while under medical review.
    • If a player is genuinely injured and down for longer than 20 seconds, then the referee requests the player be removed immediately and a substitution be made, and adds the amount of time taken to replace the player to injury time.

    Celebrations;

    • Players allowed to removes shirts without yellow card.
    • Teams have 45 seconds to celebrate, after which the opposition can kick off.

    Quick Free Kicks;

    • Advantage should go to the attacking team, so a quick free kick should always be allowed.
    • A referee must halt a free being taken to issue a red card if there is a red card offence. If the referee is to issue a yellow card, he must allow the quick free kick and then issue the yellow card after the ball goes dead.
    • A player can take free to himself, but once he does the 10 metre rule no longer applies, and can be closed down.

    Handball;

    • For a handball to be called, the movement has to be deliberate, ie ball to hand.
    • A handball can be awarded if a situation of ball to hand occurs where the offending player cannot has made no move to handle the ball or cannot move his arm out of the way in time and it prevents a shot on goal from being scored.

    10 Minute Sin Bin (Blue Card);

    • A professional foul results in a sin-binning.
    • If a player clearly feigns injury (eg grabs his face and falls to the ground after being pushed in the torso), he received a sin-bin.
    • If a player dives he receives a sin.
    • Unintentional but dangerous play (eyes only on the ball but connects with an opponent).

    The likelihood is that an extra "time official" would have to be deployed at matches to track the various time-frames involved, to take the load off the referee.

    All referee decisions/offsides on the field stand as called unless challenged.

    Nothing outlandish, common sense for most of it, cuts down a lot of nonsense, but would add a lot I would reckon.

    A lot of them are reasonable but you cannot move the offside line from the halfway line back to the edge of the box and expect good football IMO.

    No team will push up for fear of the ball over the top.
    All Strikers will sit on the edge of the penalty box waiting for the ball to be lumped forward.
    It will remove skill and instead promote hoof ball.

    Halfway line is fine for the line.

    45 seconds is too short for celebration and VAR review.
    No need to tackle this.

    The rest I am on board with for the most part

    I don't think yellow card for removal of shirt should change, same with putting it over your head

    I think that's a fair and consistently applied law of the game and one that you rarely if ever see deviate. If it happens, yellow card. I can't think of an example where a player hasn't gotten a yellow for that. It's one of the most consistent decisions in the game I think!

    I hate Howard Webb, but I have to admit that he is consistent in this scenario.

    He said that the Akanji one should have been disallowed, and that in future, he would expect such a decision, so he was being consistent when he said the Robertson one shouldn't have stood. Can we not just go back to the old rule of offside is offside? Defenders will know where they stand and it can be called in the time it takes a linesman to put up his flag :)

    Ugh this is he isn't she impeding or distracting the keeper offside rule/law ambiguity.

    How about if you're in the 6 yard box and your offside it's offside. End of. Not 100% fair but black and white.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,140 ✭✭✭jacool

    Another one yesterday, with Eze scoring Arsenal's second. There were three Arsenal players offside, AND two of them were directly in the way of Vicario, but the goal was allowed. I can't tell if Trossard moved or not.

    image.png image.png

    I'd be expecting a law change at the end of the season, to combat/rule definitively on this.

    Does that mean you can't be offside outside the 6 yard box if you don't touch the ball?
