The next A321XLR, EI-XLU, still has its tail in primer but was at least on the move in Hamburg this week.

    https://flic.kr/p/2r9fvG9

This aircraft was previously seen stored for a number of months with a white tail and bare fuselage before going in for paint, however it emerged with its tail removed. It was then seen sporting this primer tail which it has had since early April.

I wonder does the fuselage need repainted again. Theres patches that aren’t painted.

Looks like there was a panel on the belly fairing replaced.

I know it's wishful thinking but it would be cool if the next A321XLR was painted in a retro livery, especially the iconic 1975 livery.

The current commercial/brand team are against the idea of any more retro liveries on the fleet so this is unfortunately highly unlikely

Arguably, the "retro livery" fashion has dissipated to a degree in Europe. Some, such as the LOT, TAP and SAS ones, remain but Lufthansa, KLM, Air France and Iberia are amongst those carriers which have dropped the idea in favour of the standard livery fleetwide. The only remaining BA one is the BEA-liveried A319 and it is expected to be retired from the fleet later this year.

Indeed it's a sad time for the avgeek community in general.

For aircraft enthusiasts, the current airline brands are so boring, tasteless and the aircraft too, just don't have any character.

There are a few airlines that do thankfully have attractive liveries, especially Ethiad.

ITA have a very distinctive livery. The blue makes it very recognisable when the majority of airline liveries are mostly white now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

Both liveries are distinctive alright, I just wish they'd paint the engines to match or at least complement the fuselage. The white engines look a little awkward.

It does appear that retro liveries are a fading trend, I'd love to see the 70s green top livery on an XLR but it looks very unlikely to ever happen. Aer Lingus has become incredibly corporate and soulless under IAG, it wouldn't surprise me if nothing at all was planned for the 90th anniversary and all they produce is an uninspired press release, a 20% off seat sale to 'celebrate' and some poorly taken photos on a dull Dublin ramp that'll end up lost in the media centre.

I'd love to see the livery they put on the DC-3 pre-COVID on an Airbus.

The ITA livery is probably my favourite. Time will tell how it looks as the blue fades after a few years in the weather.

The Korean refresh was also very nice and EI could have easily done similar.

Apart from BA with the navy belly, all IAG airlines have quickly interchangeable liveries for fleet swaps. Paint or decal the tails, engines & winglets. Its a straightforward business decision, a boring one for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

I don't think fleet swaps is really the driving force behind livery choice at IAG carriers, it's not exactly common to see aircraft changing hands between them.

You will see synergies in things like seats, particularly economy and across short haul but again, that's not for fleet swaps but more about securing better value by bulk buying from one supplier.

Aer Lingus announced Cancun 3 weeks ago and you still cannot book via app (ios) or J fares are not available via EI Regional routes.

all seem to work for me?

Vietnam Airlines another who have a very distinctive livery that EI could have aped

Air travel has become so commonplace nowadays it's no longer regarded as glamorous, and airlines once regarded with national pride are now seen as just transport companies with business models geared towards maximising profit rather than having any pretensions to style or distinction in appearance.

Indeed. I dont think there has been any fleet swops to my knowledge. Maybe something Iberia to Vueling?

EG. Remember last summer when the "Aer Lingus XLR" has Iberia engines (assumably as a weak attempt to threaten the EI pilots) on it? Well at that point the interior was fully fitted out for Aer Lingus.

@Tenger had a post written about EDP/EDS being ex IB. Went to air fleets to verify the dates of transfer and it says they were both delivered new to EI in 2009.

That had me down a rabbit hole as these two frames are the oddballs of the short haul fleet, right down to door stickers being in Spanish, different chimes, different annunciations, different colour ACP lights, even different seats, yet a photo search of a well known aviation site has plenty of pics of them in ‘09 in EI colours! Now I’m stumped haha! I imagine they were picked up last minute from a cancelled order?!?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 4,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Locker10a

Precisely, they were ordered by Iberia, and cancelled last minute and EI took the two of them factory fresh, but it already had the Iberia cabin fitted etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭HTCOne

Didn't EI take the A319s off IB or am I imagining that?

I remember having a flight on one of the ex-Iberia 319s – the lack of legroom was shocking.

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

IIRC they were originally supposed to have J class seats so the seat rails were set up for that. When EI went all economy it resulted in the seats up front having more legroom than normal and the ones down back having less.

That’s my recollection too. Think there were three or four of them that had been operated by Iberia and came to EI - used a lot out of SNN. Did they move on to Vueling eventually?

Interesting article… Airbus to raise MTOW and MZFW. Could be interesting for EI

EI-NSH spotted in full colours without engines installed at TLS earlier this month. Test registration F-WWTX.

That's the last of the 8 announced 320neo's right? Or have they snagged more from the IAG batch (seems to be 2 a year for last 4 years)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 KB77

As is, how far away is it from joining the fleet would you expect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 LimaBravoTango

It’s on the flight line at TLS now so flight testing should be underway very shortly. I’d expect delivery in mid to late July.

That’s it for now but plenty more to come no doubt!

I wonder when EI-XLU will get going again? It hasn't had any significant movement in a month now and the removal of its tail back in April suggests there may have been a set back.

It was leapfrogged by EI-XLV, and EI-XLW isn't far behind either.
