You only need 1 camera team to show a game on 2 channels. Showing 2 games requires 2 camera teams.

Also for the millionth time RTE do not get to pick whatever amount of games they want. They bought a rights package for a certain amount of games from the GAA. A number the GAA picked.

Do you mean RTE2 and RTE2+1? They're not really seperate seperate channels. Was it on RTE Player? Don't think you missed much judging by the winning margin. Mayo being dumped out by a single point scored well after the hooter was a mad finish, I presume the ref has discretion to allow play continue. Mayo will be pissed.

Also the game on RTE News Now was with Irish commentary.

    It was RTE News Now.

The game is over when the ball goes out of play after the hooter, not up to the ref

Two posts above yours you were told that RTE can show 19 championship games (in addition to the provincial finals, AI finals etc they must show). Do you think showing two different games at the same time would be an effective use of 2 of those 19 selections?

I don't mean to be harsh (I understand it is annoying when the game you want to see isn't available) but honestly the same questions every week get tiresome with people just refusing to accept that RTE don't have unlimited selections.

So many people seem to think tht the national game and national broadcaster are a single entity and that the GAA don't operate just like every other sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,666 ✭✭✭deezell

I don't. I didn't know it was repeated on news now, it wasn't on the epg. Gaaplus is the pay service though, they (the gaa) could make a few quid showing it there, but then supporters are enraged if it was on TV but behind a pay wall, so they're damned if the do and they're damned if they don't.

As an aside, it's a bit 19th century to refer to it as the 'National' game. It's just another sport, albeit an 'indigenous' sport. It's not even popular in some counties, (Gaelic park was nearly empty for Limerick's outing). It doesn't bear much resemblance to the game it evolved from either, today was my first watch of the new rules version. Seems to be a completely different dynamic, and Jim McGuiness seems to have it figured, with his semi circular passing system, but apologies, this is off topic. Lack of coverage is annoying, yesterday's URC final was TG4 only, which I don't mind even though I was tone deaf to the Irish language in school (my ears being ringing from the boxes from a sadist national school headmaster, another 'national' sport in the 60s).

This post yesterday was poorly worded, my point was that there was a great opportunity to show the similultanious games on the two channels. It was done on the GAAGO on Saturday. The rights package should allow for this, it's common when this scenario happens in the likes of soccer world cups etc. It's common sense, and it's just dumb not to allow for it when drawing the rights up. How did the GAAPLUS allow for this scenario, did they use up one of the games on their package to show the simultaneous games on Saturday.

Juat on the Down game yesterday, and the panel, Cora especially really put the boot into the umpire for the Monaghan goal.

It was a tight/marginal call, with a ball bouncing back and maybe/likely touched on the ground by the attacker. The unpirw called it as a good goal, but the panel, especially Cora, saw fit to show numerous replays - the wording from her was poor I thought, 'the unpirw clearly saw him touch it ont the ground' and it was clearly on the ground.... It wasn't clear at all. The umpire hasn't the luxury of sitting in a studio with editors cutting endless replays to try to prove the point.

Just struck me as bad form; the umpire called it as he saw it I'm sore, and sticking the boot into him achieves nothing. Easy to throw out claims without any repercussions, but it's not rhw first time for Cora I suppose.

GAA+ had the rights to 2 final group games from the very start. Both groups published their packages on day 1.

If RTE were allowed last minute to show 2 games they would have to pay for a camera team and commentary for 2 games. That is totally different to the World Cup/Euros/CL where FIFA and UEFA produce everything for you and sell a finished product.

Correct, it was not clear and was a split second decision which the umpire had to decide on instantly.

Most unfair on the lad, probably couldn’t enjoy his t-bone later.

Cora is a poor analyst anyway.

I'm not just saying that because she is a woman, she just doesn't bring anything to the conversation.

There are much better female pundits out there.

Fitzmaurice is the most boring co-com I have ever heard on Gaa matches.

FFs you don't have to name check Canning in every commentary intervention.

    Surely RTE can do better.

Fitzmaurice is class. One of the best analysts when watching a game. He actually brings something informative to a game.

His monotone vocie is annoying but i think he's the best co comms analyst out there

Fitzmaurice is an excellent co-comm. Always very insightful

On The Saturday Game, they showed highlights of the first hurling quarter final (Limerick v Dubs) and then showed the semifinal line-up, saying that Tipp would play Kilkenny.

Then they came back later to show Tipp v Galway highlights, having already told us who had won.

Not sure why they do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,959 ✭✭✭Brian017

And 10 minutes later they pretended they didn’t tell us the result in the coming up after the break teaser by saying something by the effect of “Could Galway overcome the Tipp challenge” and then they showed the semifinal lineup again after the highlights. It was strange.

My guess would be was the line up was flashed up on screen by mistake after the first game and they decided to just go with it

Would it be worth the GAAs while producing their games and selling finished products? You could potentially see interest from TV3 and TG4 if they did

The GAA contracts with broadcasters runs for two more years. What happens after that who knows.

Same as what they're doing now, whatever broadcaster offers the best deal will broadcast the games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,435 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

I watched the Sunday game of the 22Jun and wondered do they take the pictures and feed from GAA+ ?

If so its a crap product as it looks like one camera positioned at midfield and mainly long range views.

Would have no interest in purchasing that product I have to say.

    Anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,436 ✭✭✭franglan

Any idea how those football quarter final broadcasting allocations have been set? Anything contractually to say RTE or GAAplus get first pick(s)? Armagh/Kerry and Tyrone/Dublin probably the most high profile games (open to argument here).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,117 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

That's not the GAA+ coverage. That's just a single cam for Shnday Game highlights. They are doing it since was before GAAgo/+ existed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,638 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

The picture quality on RTE for GAA seems to be deteriorating year on year.

Its very difficult to see the sliotar in alot of games.

The bitrate seems to have been reduced too, its very noticeable in some games how much noise there is on the signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭deise man

Heard it mentioned today that rte get first pick, gaa+ get next 2 and then rte get the 4th game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,435 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Certainly the Sunday game 'highlights ' offering was ..well… 'basic' would be the kindest word I could use.

Cahair O'Kane had a good Twitter thread on this a few weeks ago. Don't believe there's contractual picks but broadcasters can request their preferences and GAA factor that in to fixture decisions.

However I'd assume in this case they would be inclined to give RTE their first preference to avoid attracting flak for GAA+ and "nepotism" allegations.
