Perhaps chance your arm with customer support? The worst that could happen is they say no.

Didn't buy direct from Garmin. Bought from a local retailer

the decathlon ones don’t play nicely with Garmin - I had one with my 255 and swapped to a Garmin HRM duo, the basic one, and it’s perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭sk8board

The 255 for €219 is an absolute steal, it’s the same chipset and hardware as the 265/965, just lacking the oled screen (which uses more battery), and the Training Readiness functionality, which I don’t think is much use personally. If I only ran when my watch said I was ready, I wouldn’t be running much!

Id never use the mapping on the 965 either.

Having issues with my Garmin watch, just wondering if anyone has ever managed to resolve anything similar.

It's a vivoactive 4 watch. You can start activities such as going for a jog, and at the end, you have an option to save/discard the activity. My watch was running out of power at the end of a cycle and it actually died while the "save/discard" screen was displaying.

I charged it up, and the same screen was showing when I powered it on. But it wouldn't let me swipe up or down to choose either option. I was able to swipe out to the main screen but could not do anything worthwhile as it was still in 'activity mode'. I couldn't re-sync through the garmin connect app at this time, it just failed.

After 5-10 mins it buzzed, and said "activity auto-save in 10….9….8…" etc. After the timer expired, it saved and the syncing issue disappeared. Everything seemed back to normal. Later that day, I cycled home and afterwards, back to the same issue….couldn't save or discard the activity, couldn't do anything else and, bizarrely, when I pressed the top button on the watch, most of the 'apps' were greyed out. Including, for some reason, the power button symbol and the do not disturb symbol.

I tried hard resetting to no avail. Tried booting it in diagnostic mode, as it initially looked like the touch screen wasn't working, but that showed no errors. I then had the genius idea of un-pairing it with my phone, which I did. It was only after I did this and I was trying to re-pair it that I noticed I cannot tap the settings symbol to open the settings menu. Most of the time it opens the 'history' menu option which is right above it, but it's like the option is unselectable, same as the save/discard.

I then decided to factory reset the watch, but that option is hidden in the settings menu, which I cannot access.

Has anyone encontered similar issues and managed to find a fix? If I use the garmin express app on my PC, can I update the software version or factory reset it though that? Anyone with any other advice or tips?

Can't specifically help with your issue but when I had what seemed like a niche problem with my Garmin Fenix a few years ago (was out of warranty) I emailed Garmin support and they came back to me very quickly with a few options to try fix it at home so might be worth a shot emailing them.

Thanks for the reply, apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Support said to send it back for a repair that seems quite costly.

I've done a bit more fiddling with it to see what's going on. It looks like part of the touchscreen isn't registering any inputs……..or they're not registering at the right point of contact. It's not registering anything at the very top or bottom of the watch, and anything in the lower/top third registers as a touch in the middle, if you get me……so I'll select an option that's towards the bottom of the screen but it will open up one of the options in the middle instead. The options/settings menu is at teh bottom. I cannot press it directly and there's no way to scroll past it so I can figure out a workaround. Pity, I liked the watch but don't know if I'll be splashing out on an expensive one again.

I'm looking for some advice on where to go next.

I've had a Garmin forerunner for > 10 years and am thinking of upgrading. I mainly run but also do triathlons and use mapping.

I want the next watch for 10 years as well so I want a MIP display. The fenix 8 looks the best option but is very expensive. I looked at the enduro 3 but with it only in 51mm size, I ruled it out.

I think that leaves me the the 955 even though it's 3 years old but there are so many models in the Garmin world that I may have missed something.

Can anyone recommend another model I should check?

965 is on sale now that the 970 is there. Sounds like it’s the one you want.

I was similar to you, but got the 265 on sale, as the 570 effectively replaces it

    I recently got a 965 (upgrade from a 245).

Amazing watch. I use the mapping function on trail runs and it's spot on and easy to read.

Bought it from mysatnav.ie. Currently 539 euro. Lowest price around and great service.

The Fit File podcast with DesFit and DC Rainmaker did an episode a few weeks ago which talks a little about some of recent offerings.

Thanks for the replies. I'm fairly sure I want to stick with MIP over AMOLED so that rules out the 570/965/970.

I've done some research since my last post and it seems there are plenty of people in the same position as myself. The general recommendation is to stick with the 955 so I think that's what I'll do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭sk8board

ah ok - well then if that’s the constraints you’re pretty much limited to the 955, especially for proper mapping, but also it’s a super watch and is on sale at the moment because of the 970 👍

Never understand the fear of AMOLED, I've had one on mine for the last few trouble free years and it's some much better in terms of usability and comfort than the MIP ones I've had over the years.

    I’m one month into a 265 I got for €360 and sold my 255 for €180.

The smoked screens are fantastic- I wouldn’t go back, but one downside is that the screen is a battery-sucker for sure. both watches last 7 days of solid use, including smartphone notifications and about 7hrs of running

Have a month old FR970 with HN receipt if any one is interested, pm me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Unknownability

    How much are you thinking?

Kind of getting ready for a chnage from the Fenix 7X.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,864 ✭✭✭rizzee

I sold it yesterday and picked up a F8 Solar for the MiP screen.

It was my 2nd AMOLED and just wasn't a fan

Tried to order 3 times from Garmin, each time they cancelled. Rang my bank who said my card was fine and the issue was with Garmin. Contacted Garmin web sales via email on July 27th, they never replied. Used mysatnav.ie - no bother at all.

How long before you look at replacing your Garmin?

My Venu about 4 years old, and while it's still working ok the battery is definitely not lasting as long. Wondering what the average life span is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭sk8board

how long is the battery lasting? I’ve had garmins that switched off on runs on frigid winter mornings, which is usually a good sign the battery is goosed 😀.

Just changed my 255 to the 265 and the 255 battery was still about 6 days. The new 265 is pretty much the same, 6-7 days.

Battery is just one thing, functionality is another, if you like your data.

I've a 6 month old Forerunner 965 I'm thinking of selling to trade up for the bigger battery Fenix 8. If anyone's interested let me know. It's in perfect condition and have 2 spare straps (all black silicon and grey ultrafit nylon) that I can include.

Do Garmin generally do Black Friday sales?

I have a garmin 745 for about 4 years, and fancy an update. I see the 965 is available for €527 with satnav.ie

Just wondering if it will go cheaper with Garmin direct

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭TheRef

If I recall correctly, they had a Black Friday sale last year but the latest models were not included.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,492 ✭✭✭sk8board

do you specifically need colour mapping?

If normal breadcrumbs mapping would suffice, the 265 is the same watch and has the training readiness feature now too, so colour mapping and a little more battery are the only differences that I’m aware of

I have a Forerunner 265 and when I look at my Personal Records it only shows 3 Half Marathons although I have done 6 now. My PB was in the DCM Half this year but the time shown in the list of personal records is about 1.5 minutes less than the actual Garmin time for the race. So I presume that Garmin has a preset distance for a HM and took my PB from the time I did that distance in?

The distances that are shown in my list of Personal Records are 21.3 km, 21.28 km, 21.35 km and the distances for the three not included in the list are 21.20 km, 21.45 km and 21.26 km.

Can anyone she any light on this?

Just reading this thread last few pages and given my experience with Garmin, you would want your head examined buying from them.

Wife's vicoactive 4 let water in and died 4 weeks ago. Got onto Garmin and they said it was still in warranty based on the registration date online and this is where the games begin. They sent a UPS label, we sent it and it arrives in Bray before getting shipped to UK.

They claim it wasn't sent but it was their label with tracking. Load of online contact over next few weeks with support and I use the term loosely to be told they won't look until 20 working days after it was received in Bray.

Offered a vicoactive 5 for 136 plus 30 shipping. We said ok but payment would not progress.

Then they decide by chat since we didn't buy in the UK, the sale of goods actually does not apply and we can have the watch back and can deal with Harvey Norman. As it turns out they can't find the watch we sent so we are out of luck.

Rang consumer protection and it would seem they are within their rights to insist, even after 2 years that we must deal with Harvey Norman. Of course you need the original paper receipt.

We have since bought a google watch. I have dealt with them for warranty and I can't fault them. Garmin won't see us again.

    Don't buy Garmin.

    sorry to hear it.

I’ve used the bray-to-UK process twice - no issues the first time, full warranty replacement sent out, and the second time the issue was the oh Pod! box that UPS asked me to drop the return parcel, and it sat there uncollected for 3 weeks - but I contacted Garmin and they agreed to sent the warranty replacement ahead of receiving my watch based on proving it was in the UPS system.
