Hi RoT, it might have been in yesterday's Indo. The article comes up, but is behind a pay wall. Something very sinister about the removal of the article on Extra. Seems like RTE have a vendetta against him and feel that he shouldn't be allowed to put forward his side of the story.

I though it was the other way around, but yes Indo story is back on line

The former RTÉ presenter, Ryan Tubridy, has not paid back the €150,000 he received as part of the controversial Renault deal. Kevin Bakhurst said he is not expecting a legal action from the former Late Late Show Host arising from data request from his former employer, but “you never know.”

I think that Ryan offered to repay the money, if the work wasn't called upon. Potentially he still could be asked to carry out promotional activities and maybe that’s why he hasn't repaid the money. Interesting that there's still the possibility of legal action. Pity that they didn't go into much detail surrounding the case. One thing that might impact the case is Tub's success in the UK. He teased a big announcement regarding his future yesterday, so he might not want any drama with RTE hanging over him.

Ryan Tubridy would have no major problem dealing at an appropriate time with the issue of €150,000 in controversial payments made to him by RTÉ, a source close to the broadcaster has said. However, there are unresolved issues between the former Late Late Show host and his former employer, including an outstanding data access request, the source said. “It would be unreasonable to expect the issue (of the €150,000 payments) to be dealt with until those other matters have been resolved,” they added.

I can't say that I agree with the reasoning here. If Ryan feels that he has grounds for taking a legal case against RTE, then surely it's completely separate from repaying the money.

His reasoning … I am going to sue and if I fail to win that I won't return the 150k, if I do win well what ever I get can be -150k.

He is certainly not helping his reputation.

It’s been almost 2 years. It’s really time that money was repaid.

I'm struggling to remember exactly but was the return of the 150k a condition of his revised radio contract (before that deal went 'tits up' due to Tubridy refusing to withdraw social media comments). Or had he agreed to return it regardless?

I'm wondering if he's withholding it as some kind of leverage. The likelihood of him returning to RTE.. particularly in light of him pursuing possible legal action.. well, that ship has not only sailed, it's far over the horizon!

I remember Tubs saying that he has known Micheal Martin since the early nineties, when he was involved in student politics. I think that it's slightly disingenuous of Martin to portray himself as a casual observer. He would have been friendly with and worked with various members of Ryan's extended family, down through the years. Not saying that any of that is Ryan's fault, but it does cast things in a different light.

MM might get that, but not sure about the other fella. Maybe he could go watch some YouTube clips about the fairly recent movie about Quisling.

Lets get real here. RTE is the only show in town. If he pulled his clients two things would happen.

    • Guest bookers would have to stop using his clients as a crutch. Something like the LLS would change tack. Back to getting touring book authors, "uk celebs", poltical debates and probably lots of influencer shite.
    • NK management will see an exodus of "talent". If you are relying on appearing on LLS six or seven times a year, along with one or two building shows on RTE. You income dries up, and you move to another agent. Virgin Media and not going to fill that void.

Isn’t that what they do now anyway?

No one is asking them to do it for less then 50k and a bag of crisps.

There are a lot of people who there would kill for a presenting job. But RTE are largely a closed shop. Very hard to get into even with experience. I will agree that it is work some people can do and some people cannot. But a lot of the RTE top tier talent are not actually that talented. They have years of experience. But it is all at RTE.

Look at Kielty he has years of experience at the BBC, and he is doing LLS for a lot less then Tubs.

There are weekend presnters on RTE radio making a almost a quarter of a million euros for four hours of broadcasting. With almost no real experience in broadcasting.

It is not value for money.

In that case, it makes no difference if NK pulls his clients from RTE. Can't imagine Claire Byrne being happy when Noel tells her to quit her show. "We need to show solidarity with Ryan."

Claire Byrne left Noel Kelly's organisation, but I take your point. Interestingly, Tubs is still listed as his number one client on NKM's page. Joe Duffy in second position. It's a bit strange that Ryan still has such a prominent position among his listing. Noel Kelly is definitely in a weaker position in relation to his dealings with RTE than he would have been a couple of years ago. Two years ago he had Tubs, Duffy and Claire Byrne as clients. The three superstars of RTE. In a month's time he'll have none of the top stars of RTE

Once he still has Dermot Bannon he will be grand. RTE love Bannon.
