Well done, you have cast aspersions on the reading comprehension on the people foolish enough to engage with you.

You are going on my list, I recommend @suvigirl to put you on hers.

Israel, Israel, Israel. Your obsession with Israel Is un-Real.

    Racist ffs.

Utter scutter. I'm opposed to the slaughtering of innocent children at the hands of the Israeli government and the IDF. They are scumbags of the highest order and they deserve every bit of bad karma that will come to them.

The fact you want to distract from that by calling me a racist says more about you than it does about me. Horrific that you'll sit there and defend the maiming of innocent children just because they live in Gaza.#

Who the f*ck are the racists now?

I think Eurovision is coming to, or even at, another inflection point like it went through in the late 90s. Back then it was clear the event had outgrown its setup and was feeling stale. We dominated in the 10 year period from 87 to 97 winning 5 of those 10 years. It made sense then to admit the Eastern European countries and shake things up. It revitalised the competition.

Now we’re at a point where the future of the competition is in some danger again. The public vote revitalised the competition for a good number of years but it’s now maybe its biggest Achilles heel. 2022 showed that if you get enough sentiment the public vote can push a song to the top of the board. You still need the juries but provided you do reasonably well there, it’s all to play for.

Additionally there is no guarantee those voting ever listened to the songs, just the assumption they did. Purely IMHO the entries that were deserving winners were France, Italy Switzerland, and maybe Portugal. I thought the r French sing particularly good. I also liked Denmark it was a banger and she put in a great performance. Most of those songs fared poorly in the public vote. It seems terrible that the work those artists put in is acknowledged by juries but basically ignored by the public. There is something wrong with this.

I feel we’re at the point the Eurovision is starting to die again. It feels like a top heavy tree. Instead of solving the underlying problems it’s basking in its own reflection and living off past glories year on year now. Look at last nights interval act. I loved it but it was Eurivision giving itself a big pat on the shoulder. There was very little of Swiss culture in the interval.

I’m finding it harder to be enthusiastic about the competition now. It feels like the organisers have forgotten what the event is at its core. Worse, it’s veering into a political showcase and this is down to public voting. I don’t believe for a moment the UK deserved 0 public points. They simply were not the worst entry on the night. There were no stinkers for sure but they were not that bad to warrant a skip.

I don’t know how to fix this. It’s the EBU’s show and their mess at this stage. Martin getting sidelined with the presenters uttering “good to go” is another sign that things are getting away from the EBU. It’s only a matter of time before they end up in a very precarious situation if they don’t start a discussion about the current issues and try out some changes. .

Because it's arts-washing in its purest form.

Israel have been advertising this woman as a survivor of October 7th, and failing to mention that she is a former member of the IDF which is currently maiming and slaughtering innocent children because they are Palestinian.

They've flooded the internet with ads begging for votes before the competition.

I'm not going to have you call me a racist for a country trying to use a contest that's about unity and togetherness to wash over the slaughter of innocent children.

You might be ok with a country killing innocent children because they can, but I'm not.

You go ahead and throw your terms around. I'll come back at you even harder and make sure you are firmly put back in your disgusting, child-killing supporting box.

Mod - This thread is not about Israel/Hamas, per the mod warning in the OP.

Had to laugh when I saw an article on the rte website " Why did Ireland give Israel Ten points", apparently it's due to some form of psychological quirk like target fixation.

    🙈🙉🙊

And she's happy to wear the flag of country committing a slaughter of innocent children in her name.

You've labelled me a racist, so I'll call you a supporter of the slaughter of children. That's the tag you've earned now by your disgusting labelling of others who are opposed to Israel's arts-washing of the Eurovision.

We have given them 10 points two years in a row now. Either we are not Anti-Israeli/Anti-Semitic/Racist as some posters claim or the public vote is dodgy. It can't be both.

If they came up with a much better song and singer than anyone else Israel would of won??? 🤣🤣🤣

But in the end I believe second place isn't the winner is it??? 🤣🤣🤣

Must be really embarrassing thinking Israel should of won when Austria very easily beat them!!! 🤣🤣🤣

    Newsflash!!

If they won they wouldn't of come second!! 🤣🤣🤣

Israel won the public vote: if some people on the juries were not biased for political reasons, and did not want the contest in Tel Aviv next year, the song would have probably won overall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭ConcertKing

But you keep saying the best song won when it clearly didn't!All people care about is who won the contest and last time I checked it wasn't the country that won the public vote!

II have no issue with Russia being in the Eurovision

Lads it's a thread about the Eurovision Song Contest and some of us do actually want to have a space to discuss it. Last year the thread was closed because of all the arguing over Israel, can we please avoid a repeat?

A lot of the recent comments belong in the existing threads on the conflict, not in here (and yes I get that Israel's participation has a big impact on the contest, but can we try and discuss it appropriately and not get the whole thread shut down?).

Back to Ireland's entry, I'm sure other countries thought it weird that the best we could do was send a singer from Norway?

Nearly as embarassing as when we sent Dustin the Turkey.

We are one of the few English language speaking countries and we still cannot do well.

I for one wasn't embarrassed and am sure most people from outside of Ireland couldn't care less where Emmy was from.

And Sweden who are a 7 times winner as well had no issue picking a band from Finland as it was the best song in their final just like Emmy was in our final!

Don't think the Swiss were embarrassed over the week that Celine Dion who is Canadian won the Eurovision Song Contest for them either!

Thought Graham Norton did a poor job last night - way too snarky, which I suppose suits only the casual UK fan.

Plus constantly asking the question as to whether or not Celine Dion is going to show up in the football stadium, when it was already clear that she wasn’t.

So how about those songs eh?

Thought it was a fairly poor year myself. Probably the most forgettable bunch of songs of the last decade in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭Libertine07

Not really. The German entrants are from Austria, the Swedish entrants are from Finland. Even back in the day the UK won with an American.

The Irish public chose Emmy in Eurosong so that's that. If you don't like it, you should have voted for someone else.

I assume when you're referring to Ukraine you mean 2021? Great tune that one but Italy well deserved to win that year imo. I don't disagree with the rest, Finland in particular.

I have posted in other threads this sentiment. RTE(who is behind the Eurovision entry, and whose shoulders it lands if we were to win), don't want to win it, and so send acts that are guaranteed not to win it. If we sent a half decent entry, it would have a half decent chance of winning, which they don't want.

This is an inverse of Hanlon's Raxor. The reason we arent winning is not lack of talent, lack of capability or ineptitude, it is perfect orchestration by way of RTE.

Actually, someone last night suggested giving it to TG4, and said if they were responsible, we would at least get into the top 5 and if we did win it, they would host it and make a profit. Versus RTE's good money after bad, "Sorry government, license fees and advertising is not enough to get us through the winter can I have some more[money] please? "

    mad odds

Israel odds on to win sf2 (4/5 iirc)

shocked at how far down Sweden were

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,096 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

    best song for me

Amy other country would have won easily with that

I’d go so far as to say that particular song would have walked the jury vote too

    Best song by some way

I didn't like the Ukraine song at all so am genuinely stunned it won Semi Final 1 as I gave it no chance.Really shocked at how bad Sweden did.I really am.

Music is subjective of course but even within the narrow parameters of "female-sung ballad" I'd argue that Greece, Switzerland and France were all better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,839 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

~14 hours later, honestly the only one I remember is Espresso, maciato, mi amore. And Icelands rap with trad fiddle.

As others have said, it was a thoroughly forgettable performance from all. So I'm not astonished that a mediocre song won.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,096 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

    biggest surprise for me was

Italy and switz doing so well with the jury and Finland not doing better in the tv

I can’t take to that Italian song

France I felt was better but last years entry was better again

    Netherlands was nice

if was a poor eurov overall

I thought top 2 were the best 2 but still surprised Israel came that close

Austria, France, Switzerland, Albania, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden, Latvia, Greece, Germany and Luxembourg to name a few.

Israel was like something off X Factor 15 years ago and the jury vote reflected that.
