    LOL, I am same

lowest of 8.7 index with a course handicap of 7 playing Corballis back in 2018 😆

Of course my actual lowest ever was 9.5 and was in 2020 before WHS came along

Agree totally on this. I'd be a golfer who by and large tries on every shot/hole, which is what is expected so there isn't any wiggle room in my handicap for bringing in big scores so I no longer find myself competing for prizes but just against myself and the course.

I played yesterday evening in an open. My HI beforehand was 6.7 which under the old system would be 7. My playing handicap was 5.

My playing partner was 17.5 which under the old system was 18. His playing handicap was 17.

I know how the calculations work and the playing handicaps were right in both cases (95% rule applied), but I just feel like the application of the new system is penal in cases like the above.

FWIW I had 34 points struggling a lot of the way around but kept going to eeek out a score and lost .1

The competition was won by a 22 handicapper with 43 points.

Question someone may know answer to. If a person submits a general play score at an away course can the home club see who approved the score? Rumour about a lad at our course who's put in a few scores but there's suggestions that the rounds were never actually played and a friend of his is approving these rounds.

If the general play score was entered with the Golf Ireland mobile app, then yes the home club can see who attested the score. Makes no difference if the score was recorded at home club or away.

If the competition terminal at the venue was used to enter the general play score, then no! In these cases a signed physical scorecard should be returned to the home club.

The person attesting the score is a member of neither home club or club round was played on, does that matter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭DiegoWorst

    That shouldn't matter.
As long as the person attesting the score has a Golf Ireland membership number.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭big_drive

Yes they are a member of another club so would have a golf Ireland number. Would there name show up or just their number?

Seems they were on holidays abroad when one of the scores were approved. But is that even possible? Thought both people would need to be at course.

Our club has adapted the 85% for singles. Interesting discussion has arisen, Someone with a course H/C of 18 will play off 15 in a comp.

They could shoot 33/34/35 pts every week and will get cut for it provided they dont have a low gross score coming off their HC

Both name and number will show up.

The player needs to be within 2km of the golf course in order to make the registration.
At the time he enters his score, he does not need to be at that golf course.

By the rules of handicapping, the approver needs to witness the round from holes 1 to 18. However, the mobile app does not check if the attester was at the golf course at any stage. So it is entirely possible for the attester to be overseas at the time the round was played.

Giving clubs control and variability on a constant in a standard is so stupid and most daft Irish concept I have come across in a while.

It is an an Irish solution to a WHS problem..

    Absolutely ridiculous..

Officially, the person who marked your card is supposed to be the one attests your score, not just a random GI member. But I know people generally work around it, eg, playing a casual society round and you don't have the membership no./club of a playing partner or your marker is not a club golfer, so you get another attester, but strictly speaking it's not the correct approach.

I'm pretty sure Moyvalley had someone caught cheating the system who either was suspended or kicked out of the club.

No, you only need to be at the course to start a round. You can approve a score from anywhere.

I think you have up to 3 days to approve a score once it's sent to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭big_drive

Probably a big loophole being able to approve from anywhere

  • Administrators Posts: 55,068 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

I don't mind that bit, I've often forgotten to attest someone's score and had to do it once I got home.

But when you start a round it should force you to pick your attester, and your attester should have to confirm they are attesting on their app at that point, and their app should then verify their GPS location.

    Don't agree ..

Don't think we should remove flexibility for.the honest , for the dishonest clowns out there...

But agree attest should only be done if you actually played with the golfer...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,455 ✭✭✭big_drive

No I'm fine with that too. I just mean approving the score from anywhere when you've never actually been on the course with the player

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,799 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

It's very easy to download a GPS spoofer app and place yourself on a golf course if you were so inclined. I had an issue with the app not recognising my location when I tried to start a round so actually had to use one despite the fact that I was actually on the course, for some bizarre reason it would work when I had that enabled.

I've just logged into the clubhouse software and looking at my own scores, it just says entered by digital scorecard for any general play rounds I've entered. (All just boards society rounds, so actually very competitive)

you click in to edit and can then see your signature and the attesters name and GUI number

I can actually see that I can change it from general play to competition round also… I won't do that though 😳

If you have access to it, the General Play report will give you that info.

Otherwise you'll need to drill into your player's scoring record with the Edit link to see the attester info. Exercise extreme caution here though, as it is very easy to delete the record with a misplaced click.

The general play report is invaluable. Should be looked at more frequently than just at the annual handicap review. You'll notice some trends of competition stars who are terrible in general play... Or others who barely play comps but have 10 general play rounds a year away from home traveling for work or holiday. They play little golf and it's a good way to keep their handicap up to date.

GI advice is to regularly keep an eye on scores submitted to then keep things clean and up to date. Eg non returns and incomplete general play rounds from the GI app.

Generally speaking the data is all there in black and white. If you go looking you'd be surprised what you find. People say you can manipulate the system. Like any system it has limitations but everything is logged and time stamped. It comes down to how much time, knowledge and motivation a handicap committee has to get involved.

That interface on edit/delete score is too easy to make a mistake with as mentioned above. Should have a confirmation popup or 2nd step to prevent accidental deletes. A history log of changes would also be helpful.

if im playing with a visitor who's an igolf player (but doesn't have an official hcap yet due to lack of cards) can they attest my round? I assume not but was wondering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 270 ✭✭Sorbet

Not exactly the same but my daughter who is a GI member but whose handicap is pending as she submits her first cards was able to attest for me last week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 445 ✭✭REFLINE1

yes it turns out they can attest even if there h'cap is pending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,801 ✭✭✭Gandalph

I've broken 40 points in 6 of my last 8 rounds and not so much as a text from my handicap secretary…I'm kind of disappointed, was looking forward to telling someone about how good I'm playing at the moment because my wife doesn't care/won't listen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Laoisvillian

That's serious hitting! If I remember right, statistically you'll normally play to your handicap only 1 round in 4 so you seriously bucking that trend.

What are you playing off, and your index surely falling hard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,801 ✭✭✭Gandalph

I was 9 at the end of last year but went for lessons and was working on swing changes throughout the winter period…my course is all year round counting so I went out to 12 because I was fluffing 50% of my shots, couldn't find time to get out the range to sort it out either. The last few weeks since we got the hour back in the evening I've managed to get out to the range and iron some things out. I was also fairly abysmal at putting up until a few weeks ago but I seem to be fairly zoned in at the moment (fingers crossed!) after spending a lot of time practising. Past 3-4 weeks I've gone from 12 to a 7!

Am I able to submit a general play round on the GI app without an attestor? I play on my own all time at fairly unsociable hours. Only started playing last summer and recently got a hcp index after joining a club. I just want to keep an eye on my hcp I don't intend on entering any competitions this year. Sorry if this has been asked before.
