Think this is a pretty fair synopsis. Northampton will be a tougher test than Quins and Bath, but if Leinster click, particularly up front I don't think they will live with it. Prendergast, Barrett and also TOB give Leinster a stronger attack. Synman and Deegan replacing Molony and Baird will give more grunt up front also vs last year.

Ryan might be available Saturday according to the injury update, the wording makes me think though it's not likely

"Increasing his training load" wouldn't be a good omen alright, but with Snyman and Baird both fit again, it's less of a blow.

    The 23 pretty much picks itself so. Maybe Boyle can displace Healy from the bench, maybe Henshaw comes back in to start, but most likely;

    Porter Sheehan Furlong

    McCarthy Snyman

    Conan Doris VDF

    JGP Prendergast

    Lowe Barrett Ringrose TOB

    Keenan

Reps: Kelleher Healy Slimani Baird Deegan McGrath Byrne Henshaw

No way should Henshaw be on the bench imo.

Furlong was "increasing his training load" for about 2 months prior to his return, but yeah not a massive blow as it would been in seasons past

I don't get why people are so down on Henshaw, he's playing very well. Osborne has been grand but not demanding selection.

I'd be very surprised if Henshaw is left out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,964 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

I think he's been very average, he's ok defensively but is so far off the pace in attack. He also can only cover the centre to any credible degree. I'd argue Osborne is flat out superior at this stage, and can cover the entire backline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,407 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

I'd agree. Outside of an injury, there's little to no chance that Henshaw is left out altogether. Whilst he can't cover the entire back-line himself, any injury can be accommodated with him on the bench.

I really really hope TOB gets the nod and his lack of involvement in the last game suggests he will. He's the kind of player who can be a difference maker in knockout rugby.

TOB has to start. Osborne isn't a natural winger and JOB is still way off his best, while TOB is absolutely tearing it up. No contest IMO.

Why make the team weaker for Henshaw, what area is he superior to the alternatives in? I think he has an edge in defense, he's still a savage tackler, but in any other facet he's poorer imo. More to the point, having to push someone else out of position to fit him is silly. Osborne is a better winger than Ringrose. He's on a par with Jordie at FB. It makes no sense to me. JOB is a better winger and FB than Henshaw, and can cover the centre too.

The team is not 'weaker' for Henshaw. Ultimately the bench spot is probably between Henshaw, Osborne and JOB.

JOB has been at best, bang average this season. He doesn't deserve the 23 jersey.

Henshaw is in good form. He played very well against Harlequins and was excellent off the bench against Glasgow. Osborne meanwhile was ok against Harlequins (albeit out of position on the wing), didn't feature against Glasgow and was crap against Scarlets. On form, it's an easy choice between those two.

Whether Osborne or Ringrose move to the wing because of an injury, both are out of position so the notion of 'pushing someone out of position is silly' applies just as much to the cover options with Osborne on the bench as it does to Henshaw.

I think you're massively underrating Henshaw here.

Henshaw at final stages knock out is putting everything on the line. Far too early to suggest otherwise. Past peak but still very formidable and can come up with the goods when it matters most. Also those who have suffered the loss have the most to work for to reverse the pain.

I think shutting down the Curry brothers is important. You do that it's a handy win.

Unless they have moved from Sale in the last 2 days I’d imagine Leinster won’t be thinking about them too much.

I watched him during the 6Ns, I think I'm rating him entirely appropriately. Players get old, they lose speed and ability to influence the game. It's happened to better players than him. It was very clear that he was well off the pace, along with Aki tbf. He's not materially better than Osborne as a centre imo, and certainly not at any other position coming off of the bench. I don't see the value in having to move other players out of their best positions just to accommodate him.

You wouldn't have to move Ringrose to the wing, or Jordie to FB, if you have proper cover on the bench. JOB was excellent at FB the other week. Osborne was quite good on the wing vs France. They're both better than moving Ringrose out.

    🤣

I've no idea how I decided they were playing for Northampton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,407 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Osborne has been serviceable on the wing but he's not a winger so whilst he's doing a good job covering, he's clearly not suited there.

You might not like Henshaw which is fine, but to suggest that either JOB or Osborne are on better form right now is just not true. Henshaw has been very good to excellent against Harlequins, Glasgow and Ulster. Osborne was bad this weekend, dropped for Glasgow and good against Harlequins (albeit on the wing).

JOB as 23 won't happen. No cover at center as nobody else (Lowe, TOB or Keenan) covers there. At least with Henshaw and Osborne, players can move around to positions they can cover but Henshaw is in better form so I'd expect him to get the nod.

JOB has played center in the past, very well from memory, he's well capable of it. You can say Osborne isn't a winger, and I would agree it's his weakest position, but at the same time, he comfortably outplayed Penaud in the 6Ns. He's no mug, his issues are a lack of top end speed and some positioning struggles. I don't agree that Henshaw has been excellent. He doesn't contribute much if anything in attack anymore. Seeing him choose to cut inside rather take a prop on the outside with the try line at his mercy tells everything about where he is at now. I have nothing against Henshaw, he's been a phenomenal player over the years. He's just old and on the decline.

Did Jamie Osborne play badly this weekend? Andrew was awful but Jamie had 9 carries, 2 line breaks, 2 defenders beaten and a try. Not too shabby.

At the same time as Henshaw is being undersold, I think we might be overhyping Osborne a bit. Saying he’s as good a fullback as Barrett is a big call.

I can see the logic in saying he’s a better option for 23 but right now Henshaw is the better centre.

I was very much on the "Osborne should replace Henshaw" train, but to be fair Henshaw has been very good post 6N. He has had a pretty poor season though overall and I don't think he makes a lot of sense as bench cover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,217 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Obviously its only one part of the picture, but I think Osborne offers more going forward than Henshaw (not that Osborne is a slouch in defence). So I think it will come down to what management value most. Given our current defensive structure and focus on it, I think a defensive 12 is critical. Henshaw has always been excellent at leading the defensive line.

PS - Henshaw is 31. Are we really putting a 31 year old centre out to pasture due to age already?

No darts south of grand canal is going to make it a **** show going to the game. Would advise everyone else going in to give a lot more time than usual. Will probably need to drive somewhere early in my case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,407 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

You clearly just don't like him or you weren't watching if you can't even acknowledge that he played very well in his last three games. You're referencing one bad decision he made as an indicator of his entire rugby ability which is utter nonsense.

And 31 isn't old for a rugby player, ridiculous thing to say. VDF is 31, Furlong is 32, Lowe is 32, JGP is 33.

You can find multiple posts from me in the past where I've said I thought he was the best centre we had, and a better 13 than Ringrose. I like him plenty, but that doesn't mean I can't see when he's declining.

He had a poor 6Ns, that decision to cut inside was simply the perfect encapsulation of where he's at. I put more weight into games at the top level than I do ones where the opposition barely got off the bus. I really don't get the resistance to accepting the basic premise that Jamie Osborne, who is having a really strong season and who covers multiple positions well, is a better bench choice than Henshaw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,407 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

I mean…the Leinster coaching team had him at 23 for the Glasgow game over Osborne and I'd hazard they know better than either of us. So "accepting the basic premise that Osborne...is a better bench option than Henshaw" is just your opinion, not some well established and accepted fact that you're implying.

Also Henshaw can only play what's in front of him. Check any player ratings from any reporter for his last three games, they've been pretty good. You might not like him, fine, but his performances have been widely praised.

Thats of course as it stands, very possible Osborne gets the nod on Saturday.

Indo saying only 30k tickets sold. The EPRC are marketing the game and obviously made a hash of it. Too greedy with the pricing ! If Leinster were in charge it would be a sell out.

It's only Tuesday. Do they normally sell over 75% this far in advance?
