Absolutely crazy that this has taken almost 3 years to restart.

Some pictures taken today. Great to see activity on the ground.

Work appears to be concentrated on the section running from Old Cratloe Road to Knockalisheen Road and from what I could make out it's still heavy earthworks. Appeared to be a lot of activity around the bridge over the Limerick-Ennis railway. The other section from Coonagh to the Old Cratloe Road was at a more advanced stage when Roadbridge went belly-up way back in 2022. No contractor or like signage in evidence. No activity on the Knockalisheen Road widening/rebuilding.

Coonagh Cross looking North - the caravans have been pushed out of the way and the roundabout is like traffic cone central.

The Knockalisheen road widening isn't happening until the new road is finished.

It's a 2 year program. 1 year to finish the new road and then 1 year to widen the Knockalisheen Road.

It looks like the section between Coonagh and the Old Cratloe Rd will open on August 11th to facilitate a full closure of the Old Cratloe Rd.

Diversion via the newly constructed section of the dual carriageway constructed as part of the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road to the R445 Clondrinagh roundabout

Partial opening only at this point; a short 1km section from Coonagh (Tesco roundabout) to the Old Cratloe Road to facilitate traffic diversions while works continue on the Old Cratloe road which is currently closed from the Country Club to the Limerick/Clare border. The remainder of the current works, which will open in later phases, consists of a section from the Old Cratloe Road to Knockalisheen Road and then the rebuilt Knockalisheen Road from its junction with the new road to Watch House Cross. All of this is expected to be completed at some point in 2026 having been delayed by Roadbridge going bust and the crazy delay in appointing a replacement contractor. So it’s probably a bit early to pass any judgment on the effectiveness of this road.

Of course the further section from the Knockalisheen road to Castletroy/UL/M7 which has the potential to make a real difference to the people of Clare and Limerick was canned by Eamonn Ryan and is off the agenda for now.

Hopefully just delayed not canned. Not just Clare and Limerick people either. It would be of benefit to the entire Mid West region, would be very welcome to people in North Tipperary too.

It's still in the Limerick and Clare development plans, both of which came into affect after Ryan had it removed from the LSMATS, so both councils still want it built. Who knows, it might get a mention in the new NDP.

The article I linked says the project is not in the new NDP.

The article you published refers to the old NDP, which it is not in. The roads elements in the current NDP got rather restricted for some reason back in 2021.

The new NDP hasn’t been published yet (it was due today) and it may be included in that, as between now and 2030 the only possible investment would be planning and design anyway which is small fish

The next section from the Old Cratloe Road to the Knockalisheen Road is to open Monday. This will include the the link road into Moyross.

The Knockalisheen Road will now be closed for a year for widening and to allow the railway bridge to be demolished and rebuilt.

therefore it should be a priority to get the next phase of this road done asap through to the Dublin Road. No real advantage if you’re gonna have a great road which then links onto the usual crappy road through Parteen etc!

Agreed, of which the Shannon bridge north of UL would be the first phase. I assume this will start at the Dublin Rd/Plassey Park Rd/Groody Rd roundabout.

I think the roundabout beyond finnegans restaurant on Dublin rd is the destination of the road. Not sure of exact detail of in between points

Really? Not sure I’d recommend that roundabout myself, it’s overloaded with enough intersecting routes as it is.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Lads, there is no destination/starting point to this road as there is no actual design. It never got passed the proposal stage and is currently dead in the water.

Whole road was approved and then blocked by Greens originally. I reckon 2nd phase will go ahead eventually and traffic volumes created by first section of road may dictate how soon that is.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,465 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

No it wasn't approved. It never got passed the route selection stage. The only part of your statement that is correct is that the Greens blocked it.

The first post on the Limerick Northern Distributor Road Plan forum on boards was posted on July 2008, almost 18 years ago!

It read, ‘ Looks like the plan to build a road linking the Coonagh roundabout in Limerick to Moyross is going ahead. http://www.limerick.ie/Transport/TenderforCoonaghKnockalisheenDistributorroad/Thefile,8962,en.pdf I believe this is going to be part of the 'Limerick Northern Distributor Road' which will eventually run from the Coonagh roundabout out to the Dublin road somewhere. I haven't been able to find much info on this, does any one know what the proposals are? Where would the road pass/come out etc?‘

18 years on and the road isn't even on the recently published Government €24bn National Development Plan, of projects, under construction, pending, proposed etc. The big stumbling block currently is not the elusive NIMBYS, who so trigger some people, but the ESB's refusal to countenance any construction work close to the 100 year old earthen embankments of the Shannon Scheme. Other constraints include building the road through a special Area of conservation, across the largest floodplain of the Lower River Shannon and the requisite re-alignment of the Mackey Roundabout; the Dunkettle re-alignment was opened in 2014 at a cost of 215 million euro. The next review of the National development Plan will be held in 2030. If planners can deal with these concerns and get the road included in that 2030 review even as an aspirational project, then it should be designed, planned and constructed within the following 10 years. So, all going well this stretch of road might be completed by 2051… all going well!!

Eventually being the operative word. It isn't in any concrete plan and doesn't even appear to be on the agenda of anybody that maters. Even if a senior cabinet minister (and the Limerick/Clare hinterland isn't exactly flush with those at present or likely to be anytime soon) took an interest in driving it forward and shepherding it through the decision making process, it's likely that the new project would take a minimum of 10 years to get from "let's make it happen" to "let's drive on the thing". And thats assuming that intervening variables are kept to a minimum.

That idiot Ryan has a lot to answer for.

    Seriously, don't hold your breath.

I guess the main thing is that the route was approved, before being ‘blocked’ by Greens . I reckon when they see the bottlenecks created by this ‘ half baked’ job pressure will be exerted locally on the relevant authorities to get the complete road finished. Don’t worry I won’t be holding my breath😉
