Hi all does anyone know how many faults you can have I think it's the same as ADI test only 4 allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

Not sure - is supposed to a higher standard than the state driving test so could be.

This waiting around is a killer, starting to lose interest at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭pandabat

I agree that it's a tough time with the not knowing and there are perhaps 2, 3 or even more weeks still to go but, as it's beyond our control, just have to try to keep the head down and busy with other stuff. Some candidates would have done the assessment/test back in December (7 or more weeks ago) and will also still be waiting on the outcome so there's certainly an element of mental endurance involved in getting through the process.

I could be wrong but I believe the December assessments were all cancelled due to the bad frost as far as I can remember..

The assessments should be coming to an end soon.

I imagine many dropped out or didn't bother showing up.

Done now anyway.. The 2 testers just left the car and said will be in contact in a couple of weeks.. To be fair they were grand..

I'd say I livened it up abit for them with afew of my mistakes anyways 🤣🤣

Very difficult not to make a few mistakes unless you've not really changed your driving style since passing the test OR if you're already an ADI and are teaching/driving to the test requirements most days.

Most people will have made a few, it's just a matter of how many, what they were and how it compares to whatever everyone else did. I can certainly pick out things that I'd do differently if I was doing it again but you alas only get one shot. It's like the old joke though - you didn't need to be able to outrun the bear, just be able to run faster than the other person. They will presumably be looking to fill a panel with a certain number of people. The passing grade will likely depend on where they need to set the bar in order to fulfill that requirement.

The testers are in Mullingar on a rotating basis (so doing a couple of days each) and so are generally not stuck there for the entire duration. The job does involve driving around your assigned test centre area as long as you're stationed there though and so Mullingar might well have been regarded as a bit of a change of scenery for those there.

It's funny how they just jump out of the car at the end isn't it. I actually thought I had failed there and then but it just seems to be a thing they do.

Seemed like a bit of an impromptu end alright but I guess it's a bit of a conveyer belt there with all the candidates to get through and, for whatever reasons, they might want to keep those who have just finished the test away from those about to do it 🤷🏻‍♂️ Hopefully just another 2 weeks of waiting now .. but it'll probably feel like 2 months 😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭carzony

I've honestly not thought about the job much at this stage. The first few weeks it was on my mind an awful lot but i'm still intrigued to see if i've passed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Elite_Driver

Yeah very same as that to be honest I just want to know how I got on in the test more than anything 🤣🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭carzony

For future campaigns maybe they should try to speed things up for candidates. 3-4 months is a bit much of a wait.

I applied in September last year, way too long of a recruitment process.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,837 ✭✭✭carzony

    Absolutely.

If you were without a job you'd most certainly get an offer by any other organisation a lot quicker.

Never thought I'd be this long waiting for a simple yes or no.

Hoping to get good news because I don't think I could go through the process again…

To be fair, once they got going, the theory test and interview rounds seemed to progress quickly enough but the driving test segment is a long, hard manual testing slog with no real shortcuts.

Not sure what could be done differently. Tougher theory test round at the start (more questions, less time, higher pass mark required) could be one way to quickly reduce numbers down but, after that, I'm not 100% sure what they could do differently. Maybe some sort of aptitude testing or something like that.

Personally, i'd drop the driving test part, it's a bit ott and takes way to long to conduct. They provide training so it;s not really necessary to test people in that regard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭GTTDI GOD

How is the driving test part ott?! They are training you to be a DRIVING TESTER, not training you how to drive 🙄 You have to show that you can drive properly and safely, otherwise what is the point? I’ve seen plenty of testers cut corners on the road and their attitude towards test candidates seems to go hand in hand with their own driving.

Having read all your posts I wouldn’t be hiring you if I were the RSA. And FWIW, 5 months waiting isn’t long when compared to other waits with the RSA.

Where are you in the competition? How did your test go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭GTTDI GOD

I’m not in the competition, I’m an ADI, so I’ve already passed all those tests 😉

I dunno 🤷🏻‍♂️ I know that I've definitely been driven in cars with some people (with full licences) who I don't think would ever be capable of the job ... Even with any amount of training. These are people who you'd wonder how they got their licence in the first place. Not sure that there's any other good way to weed those people out in advance without some sort of practical driving test.

Continuous assessment I imagine would be the only way to improve the general driving standards on the roads. I used to be assessed every 3 years when I was driving forklifts.

    Good for you.

Just this week I followed an 'adi' driver on my way to work and have never seen worse driving in my life. I won't mention the company but these driving assessments don't mean much but that;s my opinion.

Continuous assessment I imagine would be the only way to improve the general driving standards on the roads. I used to be assessed every 3 years when I was driving forklifts.

There's certainly a good case to be made for that, especially with elderly drivers ... but given the waiting lists for learners at the moment, I didn't know where they'd fit in extra re-evaluations of already-qualified drivers 😄

However, I was more referring to there being a real need (imo) for some sort of practical driving test within the recruitment process. e.g. Don't want to recruit applicants using only theory test/interview, begin the training course(s) and then find that, say, 10% of recruits can barely drive themselves properly, let alone be capable of monitoring other people's driving.

While it is a pain in terms of adding time to the recruitment process, I alas just can't see a good way to complete same for this kind of job without at least something in that vein. Perhaps the assessment could be a little shorter and perhaps be carried out at more regional centres closer to applicants' homes to reduce the travel but I think that ditching it completely would result in a poorer pool of suitable recruits for the panel. This would lead to more disruption, delays and faffing about later on in having to replace the "undriveables" in the training course(s) with new people from the panel, completing their recruitment, and then getting them up to speed with the training so far (and then maybe having to do that again and again if some of those replacement hires also turn out to be poor drivers).

Agree with the tests being conducted close to your home and maybe a 30 minute test would suffice. Anything to make the process more efficient.

Am I right in saying results should be due next week?
