Is there any information about spec upgrades, screen improvements etc. Essentially, why would this be better than the Switch 1? Also, could it rival the steam deck in terms of raw power/specs.

I'm interested in purchasing but thinking the Switch 1 might be better value?

I wouldn’t expect MP4 to be a major system seller, but given we have a 2025 release and a likely cross-gen approach given it’s already announced for Switch 1, it’d make sense to launch it early. They’re different enough that they wouldn’t cannibalise each other.

Mario Kart will suck up a lot of oxygen regardless, but having two big name first party titles for launch would be a fantastic showing going by recent console releases.

No official specs yet, and I wouldn't bet on them being released before the April "Closer look" event. In terms of "why better?", a larger screen and hopefully improved joycons are your main things for handheld, along with more powerful hardware hopefully giving more consistent performance across the board.

It'll almost certainly be lighter than the Steam Deck, although the specifics of the ergonomics are an open question.

The big thing that your mention of the Steam Deck raises is "What makes you interested in a Switch?" Because if you mostly play 3rd Party titles that are on Steam, a Steam Deck will be the better choice in terms of eShop pricing. The reason IMO to go for a Switch or Switch 2 is that you want to play the 1st party titles on offer.

I think I just want a different gaming experience and I'm open to different things. But if I feel something is way overpriced and doesn't have longevity, I won't go for it.

Well, "way overpriced" is a thing to be aware of - Nintendo are the Apple of the videogame world and e.g. the list price for Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild hasn't dropped from its €70 starting point since it launched in 2017 😅 so don't be buying a Switch and expecting great deals on 1st party titles, because they're few and far between.

In your shoes, I would spend some time looking at games that are Switch exclusive and see if those would tip you choice either way.

But it's viable to buy games second hand on adverts and then resell them once finished at a minimal loss?

I would expect performance to be roughly equivalent to a Steam Deck, with caveats.

PS4 tier performance has been suggested in a lot of the leaks, which seems like a safe enough bet. Obviously devs can target lower resolution on handheld which will help, and the underlying tech is several gens beyond PS4 era which will hopefully be beneficial for supporting more modern titles. It’s also going to benefit from some sort of DLSS support, which remains the best in class upscaling tech and one which the other current gen consoles don’t benefit from. Not expecting PC quality DLSS, but certainly image quality such benefit from Nvidia hardware.

The caveat is that handheld will limit power draw. Steam Deck is an open platform, allowing users to freely tweak performance regardless of impact on battery life and the like. That’s not the case with a Switch 2, where battery life and power draw will be a lot more tightly regulated by Nintendo. So quality of performance will be much more the responsibility of the devs. I’m sure 3rd party releases will continue to be a mixed bag performance wise - some good, some bad. Nintendo as ever will be best positioned to take full advantage of the new hardware themselves, so first party titles will likely continue to impress within the hardware confines.

Rumours of the price being $449-$499 with the mario kart bundle being 50 more ($549).

Would put it on the wrong side of €500 here. Maybe closer to €600 if the US to EU PS5 pro pricing is anything to go by.

Has to be wide of the mark especially since it no longer has its handheld unique selling point.

Id say the PS4 equivalency will be in docked mode and much lesser while hand held to conserve battery/lower heat etc. the device does seem similar depth to original which is what, half the width of steam deck/Rog?

I'd say the price of 500 here would be about right. Nintendo are not known for taking a hit on hardware release like Sony. They always make money even at launch.

I love my ROG Ally but there is no doubt it is a niche product. Nintendo won't be competing with that market. But, as they will no doubt be running a slimmed down OS, this could help with efficiency.

I will be in Japan in May. Hope to get a look then maybe in store

I wonder if they'll do something nuts, like announce Halo: Master Chief Collection as a launch title?

Yep, you can sell first party physical games second/third/forth/... hand and recoup a lot of the cost but check what they're going for to get an idea. CEX and adverts will give you an idea. Also CEX is handy if you just want a no hassle selling experience.

A lot of questions. In general, doesn't seem to be any huge changes afoot - shouldn't surprise anyone given Switch 1 success. I'm a little surprised at the size. 8" (if accurate) is quite the bump from the 6.3" of Switch 1 - if this is the case then I Imagine there might be a Lite (smaller) variant available at launch too to cater for younger gamers and those of the smaller hands variety! Ability to use new joycon as a mouse looks cool and will add value to certain games. And that's what we're all waiting for, isn't it? Games… new Mario Kart seems a given now, and we should expect a new Mario platformer before Christmas I'd imagine. Metroid Prime 4 at launch would make a lot of sense too. No doubt there'll be a few surprises. Personally I hope Nintendo takes a few risks and shows a bit more ambition with their own games - outside of BOTW/TOTK and a few other titles I don't feel that has really been the case and they've been playing it pretty safe overall. Safe can turn into stale pretty quickly if you're not careful. Price-wise I think €399 would be the sweet spot - any more than that and I think Nintendo could struggle with sales considering it's not expected to be a huge technical leap from Switch 1. Let's see!

Wonder if that Breath of the Wild remaster they were demoing on during Switch 2 closed-door previews might see some life outside of a tech demo. Initial rumours didn't make much sense, given TotK's recentish release, but the idea keeps getting traction per the likes of the below article. You can't deny TotK doesn't pip it on content, but there's always something about BotW that's going to feel like a purer experience for open-world Hyrule.

A free 60 FPS upgrade and we're good Nintendo. None of your fancy stuff. Oh and turn off that annoying noise when you open the menu/map screen. 11/10 games then.

Can't remember if I posted this already here or was saying to someone else, but I think it would be a good idea to clarify what happens switch games on the Switch 2. Like Xenoblade X is out in March but why would someone buy it without knowing how it will run on Switch 2 compared to Switch. Or maybe there'll be a Switch 2 version and if there is, will there be a free upgrade?

    Elden Ring?

That would be amazing, look forward to comparisons with the PS5 version

I wonder would Pokemon A-Z make it on time for launch day, would be nice but we'll find out during the Pokemon direct in February.

    Half Life 3, a Switch 2 exclusive!

To keep the 3 theme going, Mother 3 gets a complete remake for Switch 2, with a worldwide release.

I think a Mother/Earthbound collection would be a lovely thing to see

Forza Horizon 5 is such a great game, I prefer the 4th one though (set in and around Edinburgh).

Very interesting years ahead, a good time to be a Nintendo owner

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,383 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

If the hardware can support a game like that we might see something different as far as Nintendo standards go in the next couple of years. My one hope is we see GameCube games on NSO but if Xbox Live or the games catalogue is on there I will buy a lifetime of NSO

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,398 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I think Gamecube being on NSO at some stage during the Switch 2 lifecycle is obvious and hopefully 3DS as well. Xbox Gamespass will probably make it as well in some form. More stuff from Sony may also appear.
