    what’s nole’s injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭Papagei

He has 4 slams at the age of 21. If he stays healthy he's well on his way to being an all time great. He's a magnificent player. Nobody has undefeated seasons.

not seeing it. May well win more slams, but more to do with the quality of the era. Put it this way, he’d win nothing against the big three when they were in their primes..9-10-12 years ago

More like 20 years since Federer was in his prime though.

I didn't see that much of the match today but Alcaraz just has a tendency to let his level drop for sets here and there, something I don't think the big 3 did in their prime. Certainly not to the extent Alcaraz has been doing it over the past season or so. He is still 21 though, but he shouldn't be ranked behind Zverev and should be far closer to Sinner if not ahead of him.

Both Sinner and Alcaraz will be all time greats in my book, assuming they stay fit and healthy. Fantastic players. Fedalovic are arguably the 3 greatest of all time, just because you may not beat them doesn't mean you aren't an all time greats.

Saying that, I think Alcaraz is a better all round player than Nadal was.

no. Fed’s prime was quite long. His 2017 Aus performance was as brilliant a performance and display as 2007 even. Anyway, my wider point stands. Carlos wins nothing against the big three when big three were at/near their peaks/best

His prime was 2004 to 2007. He managed to still be competitive after then because his prime level was so high. His movement and forehand was well off 2006 levels in 2017.

Djokovic is an absolute phenomenon. This guys peak was 2011 to 2016 and here he is in 2025 and still beating the very best players in the world and top players entering their absolute peak that are 16 years younger than him. Without question the greatest player that has ever lived. As for medical time outs, loads of the players do it constantly including many of the top players. Even Murray said when he won his US open and had two set lead and then lost next two sets he took a toilet break just to kill the momentum of the match and it worked. Its up to players to respond regardless and thats all part of the game both physically and mentally.

A near impossible draw for Djokovic with Zverev next and even if he wins that probably sinner in the final. To be honest just reaching semi finals of grand slams at nearly 38 is monumental in itself so any extra step he takes from here is probably a bonus. He is way past his prime now

    Novak is a machine. Legend.

Addressing some of the other points on here on the potential greatness of Alcaraz (and presumably Sinner). I see them both as brilliant players but no way they are in the league of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in their prime. The fact that Djokovic is so competitive against both of them so far past his prime proves this. If you took the level Djokovic was playing at times between 2011 to 2016, he would comfortably beat Sinner and Alcaraz in my opinion 7 times out of 10. Its very hard to prove any of this but the depth in men's tennis now is far weaker.

Consider top players about 8-10 years ago……Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawrinka, Del Potro, Thiem, Cilic, Berdych, Ferrer, Tsonga, Nishikori, Dimitrov

Look at top 10 now: Sinner, Zverev, Alcaraz, Fritz, Medvedev (fading already), Rublev, DeMinaur, Djokovic (nearly 38), Dimitrov (twilight of career), Ruud

There is just no comparison in terms of depth of great players previously to now.

Well this looks to be over already. 4-1 to Sinner. De Minaur just doesn't have to the game to get further. I think he will be like Tsonga and few others that he will be always knocking on the door but not going to make get through unless some of the others are injured.

    Sinner just too good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,073 ✭✭✭Floppybits

All to easy for Sinner. They just read a stats out there on Sinner vs De Minaur, they have played each other 9 times and Sinner has won them all and they have play 24 sets over those 9 matches and Sinner has won 23.

Same as Swiatek v Navarro overnight - she was just a different level.

I love Navarro, love watching her play, but she wasn't at the races. There were any amount of "easy" shots where she needed to kill it, but she hit a perfectly decent return shot and Swiatek killed that from a much more difficult position or angle.

Just a different standard. And Swiatek's athleticism is just jaw-dropping (Navarro being no slouch herself!)

Only following it on the ATP website, is De Minaur still on court?

Nah all over. It felt like Sinner was just going through the motions , he was just a different level as @HeidiHeidi says above. Match was boring because Sinner was so much on top that there was no drama, no thrills or anything like we seen yesterday between Alcaraz and Djokovic, Di Minaur didn't even get a break point against the Sinner serve. Sinner looked fresh as a daisy in the after match interview with Jim Courier. Ben Shelton up next, hopefully he can give Sinner more of a game.

Great fun "legends" doubles game on now - Baghdatis/Blake v Philippousis/Hewitt - lovely mix of exhibition/messing and going for it - they can all still whack a ball, that's for sure! Philippousis put in a serve that's only a couple of KMH below current ones.

I love these games - the one and only time I was in Wimbledeon we got in on evening return tickets and saw a similar match on No 1 court - I'd go back for that alone!

Really hope Djokovic wins it now.The Australian media and fans really seem to dislike him so it would be lovely to see him piss them off one more time.

Hope we get a Swiatek v Azarenka final 2 best players in the world matching up would be great for tennis.

I was a little bit disappointed when Swiatek got that drugs ban as I'm a big fan of hers but having looked it up it appears to have been a completely innocent harmless mistake that was out of her control so not really something to hold against her.

Disappointed to see that the Djokovice/Zverev match is on first tomorrow, I think this will be the more competitive/interesting of the 2 semi finals. Can't see Shelton beating Sinner, he will give it a good go for the first set but after that it Sinner will take him apart like he took De Minaur apart.

I have lost interest in the Ladies now, it will be another Sabalenka/Swiatek final.

Lame, not much interest in watching the Sinner - Shelton match as I don't think it'll be much more competitive than the de Minaur quarter final. Sinner's side of the draw is fairly boring really.

I have Swiatek/Keys on in the background, stopped paying attention as it was all a bit one-way (although Keys giving her a much better game than Navarro) - looked back over and it's 5-0 to Keys in the second set - I was not expecting that!!

I still expect Swiatek to pull it out of the bag, but she's having to earn it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 714 ✭✭✭klr87

Great performance by Keys, down a match point at 5-6*, and always behind in the match tie-break. I just hope she plays better in the final than she did in 2017 USO final against Sloane Stephens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,647 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Swiatek edged out yikes

Djokovic retired injured after losing a first set tie-break to Zverev. Novak might have been able to beat Alcaraz, but Old Father Time was too much for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,033 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

Crowd booing Djokovic an absolute disgrace, at least he went out and tried to play. There have been countless players in recent years who just retire before the match and there is no match at all, at least he went out and tried to battle and it was clear he couldnt serve properly or consistently which makes it an absolute nitemare in tennis. Best of 5 sets when you are struggling physically is just impossible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,073 ✭✭✭Floppybits

I would say if it was any other round other than the semi or the final Djokovic would have pulled out before the match. It was clear after the Alcaraz match that he wasn't going to be fit to play the semi against Zverev. Father time might be catching up with Djokovic now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,073 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Shelton really needed to take that first set. It was an awful tie break from Shelton, I think he 6 of the 7 points Sinner won out. Hopefully he can take the second set but I can Sinner taking control now and seeing this out.

The outfit Shelton is wearing is awful reminds of a Wibbly Wobbly Wonder ice pop.

Sinner just too good, Shelton missing everything. Think the commentator said that Shelton has 32 unforced errors. Sinner is just keeps putting the ball back in play forcing Shelton to go for shots and he is missing. In that last service game I think he hit 5 unforced errors.
