First grand slam of the year!

Both Sinner and Sabalenka are favourites to defend their titles, but let's see how it goes.

We were given in work, 3 tickets to 2nd rounds session (including flights, and night accom).
Went to the 3 most senior people (excluding a pregnant associate director). I'm 4th in the hierarchy. FFS.

Unlucky, but, that's a fairly unusual bonus to get for work, are you based in Australia and what line of work are you in or do you work for tournament sponsors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,173 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Based in Sydney, which makes a trip to Melbourne not unusual. Not work not related to any event sponsors. Was a gift from a client/supplier.

Kyrgios in trouble in his match down a set and a break...

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,668 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Djoko dropped the first set but looks like he's restoring order now.

Kyrgios down two sets so hopefully looks like we won't be seeing much more of him.

Kenin out 3-6 3-6 to Gauff. Gauff is an awful first round draw, but Kenin is one of the more bizarre grand slam winners of recent times. Won the Australian Open five years ago, also reached the RG final… and then pretty much nothing.

Kyrgios gone. Fearnley did well to keep it together when the crowd was against you and cheered every mistake he made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Kenin, a really strange player alright, there's obviously a very good player there when she applies herself, but, doesn't seem to have the ability or desire to grind out a result if things going against her. Guaff was a tough draw in fairness, so no surprise Kenin went out, a lot of players similar to Kenin on the women's tour, making or even winning a grand slam and then dissappearing!

I watched some clips of that Raducanu match (which she just about scrapped through in two tiebreaks). Her serving was absolutely abysmal.

I see Medvedev made it through in 5 sets against someone ranked 418 in the world...but not before smashing a net camera with his racket!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭al87987

Very impressive from Fonseca, 18 year old Brazilian whoo beat Rublev in straight sets, fantastic hitting off both flanks and showed no nerves.

    Definitely one to watch.

Some match for everyone apart from Rublev. Fonseca was a joy to watch.

Watched the most of the first set of that Raducanu match as it was first on court, as you say the serving was abysmal. Looking at the stats Raducanu served 15 double faults, Alexandrova who seemed to be struggling with her serve at the start of the match served 4 double faults. Hard to know what to make of Raducanu maybe she needed this match to have a blow out but she will need to improve significantly to beat Anisimova in the next round. As I said looking at the stats outside of the serve she won 8 of 14 games on her opponents serve so she is hitting well.

Haven't really watched any of the men's yet, watched a bit of Berretini vs Norrie but for Norrie is a hard watch, don't know what it is but I just find his games difficult to watch. I see Wawrinka lost, I think maybe time has caught up with him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,187 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Definitely agree on Raducanu hitting well, but that serve looked even worse than usual, maybe a work in progress.

Norrie has always been limited but dogged I would say. In fairness he said he was ill as well. Berretini is always a fun watch great to see him likely continuing to rise again in the rankings.

Early call but Fonseca will be top 5 minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Kokkinakis 2 sets to 1 up on Draper. Not a bad match both players seem to go up and down in their energy levels. Some of the crowd is annoying shouting out when Draper is in the middle of his serve

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Casper Ruud is out. Beaten by Mensik.

Seems to be good group of next gen players coming up, be interesting to see who or how many make the break through this year? Could be a very interesting year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭tiegan

Future of tennis is bright, some super young players starting to shine, Fonseca, Mensic, Borges to name just a few - Draper/Kokkinakis is high quality tennis, pretty evenly matched!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,571 ✭✭✭✭josip

    Korda and Ruud both out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Korda has disappointed so far, he hasn't really made the impact many were expecting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Kokkinakis seems to getting on top now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Hopefully the Raducanu serve is a work in progress and she is going to go through some pain before getting the rewards, remember around 2009/2010 (could be wrong) Djokovic was working on his serve and the amount of double faults he hit.

And into a 5th set. A good come back by Draper, he looked down and out at 5-3 but rallied and won the set 7-5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Great win by Draper against Kokkinakis especially in that atmosphere. I wish the Australian Open would do something about this calling out while the player is about the serve when it is against an Aussie. No problem with the crowd cheering their guy or gal but at least respect the opponent, maybe they should throw who ever does it out of the stadium, I'm sure once a few are removed it will stop. Don't know how many times the umpire had to ask the crowd not to call out during Drapers serve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭tiegan

Yep watched the whole match and the umpire was to the pin of her collar to keep them under control, obviously a great atmosphere, but they need to respect the players

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

I have no problem with the cheering even when a player makes a mistake, what gets me annoyed is the person who shouts out while the player is serving. So annoying when they do that. I know it happens are other tournaments but the Australian Open seems to be worst especially the John Cain Arena.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,187 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Another Aussie for Draper next Vukic........I doubt the crowd will be any better behaved....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I finally got around to watching a morning (our time) match..... Fonseca and Sonnego going at it hammer and tongs, a great match - but ES have switched it to a pay channel, and have spent the last half hour gossiping and talking rubbish among themselves - grrrrrr 😡

I wouldn't mind if they'd just gone to another match (well I would, but YKWIM)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

In other, very OT, news - what on earth have Nike given Madison Keys to wear??? It looks like she got dressed in the dark and put her clothes on in the wrong order!

The version Katie Boulter has is gorgeous (in fairness she'd look good in a black sack).

Back on the subject of tennis, a right rollercoaster of a match developing between Boulter and Kudermetova, who was 5-1 up, that set looked all over - Boulter dragged it back to 6-5 via a medical time time out for the Russian, it looked all over the other way - went to a tie break, and the Russian won.

Hard to know what way the second set will go!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Awww, Berrettini and Fonseca both gone in the last few minutes 😥

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Just caught the end of the Boulter match, she lost but from I seen she didn't seem to be playing that well. Who'd have thought that Raducanu would go further in the competition than Boulter. That was a big win for Raducanu over Anisimova, I watched the first set and there wasn't much between them. Raducanu was serving better than she did the other night but then again it couldn't have been any worse. The big problem is her second serve, Anisimova was burying it when she got the chance. Swiatek up next for Raducanu, can't she her beating her especially with that second serve but who knows.

Speaking of outfits the Sinner outfit is yuck, yellow top and white shorts, looks like what rich golfers wear at the country club all he needs in the jumper tied over the shoulders.

Haha, I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of - that's exactly it 🤣

Boulter played rock solid in the second set, I really thought she had it in the bag, but the errors stated creeping in through the 3rd and Kudermetova just stayed steady. I'd call that as Boulter lost it rather than K won it.

Big news for me, tennis fans. I was at the distributor meeting for a racquet company that I work with. They announced their first ever top 30 ranked player to use their equipment……drum roll…….Elina Svitolina!! Ex World No 3, now 27. Married to Gael Monfils. What a coup! Done in unbelievably quick time (Less than 2 weeks) and is using a racquet that we hadn't officially launched yet! Anyway, has won her first 2, is playing really well, but looks like it could be Paolini next😯

Danielle Collins behaviour after beating Destanee Aiava of Australia was bizarre, literally winding up the crowd in every way possible. The on-court interviewer sensibly cut things short. It's not as if Collins hasn't played in this sort of partisan atmosphere many times before (either for or against her), often more pronounced than today.

Does Radacanu ever stop whingeing? If its sore, give up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭klr87

Medvedev in trouble again, two sets down against Tien (world #121).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,288 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Just gone to a final set with the local time at 01.35, why do they keep doing this?

It's gone on so long, this afternoon's snooker match at the Masters has finished before it. 3-3 in the match tie-break.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,262 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

Brilliant match. Tien another to watch in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭klr87

    Holy Moly. Tien wins 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(7) in 4 hours 53 minutes.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,262 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

No final for Daniel this year.I thought Tien was gassed in set 4. Some resilience to get though that.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,262 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

The most embarrassing interviewer I've ever seen, and I used to watch this on Eurosport…….

Looks like it will be another long night for the British No.1 Draper. He took the first set 6-4 and then lost the second 6-2 and now it is 2-1 in the third. Vukic is playing well and not going away. The crowd don't seem as rowdy as they were the other night when Draper played Kokkinakis.

Collins seems to get off on the crowd being against her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I came in to the Draper-Vukic match at the end of the second set - it's a right ding-dong! Two big hitters going at it, I suspect it'll be whoever's nerve goes first.

And I'd say by the 4th set, no matter who wins the 3rd, the crowd will be going bananas, and it'll interesting to see how Draper handles it (I haven't seen his other match but I gather he wasn't keen on the antics - and who would be, in fairness).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Thought Draper handled the crowd well the other night against Kokkinakis, he didn't seem to complain too much and didn't seem to ruffled by some in the crowd shouting in the middle of his service action. The crowd are for Vukic but it is on the Margaret Court Arena and now the rowdy free-for-all that is the John Cain Arena.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Oh the British No1 dropped his serve there. Vukic now serves for the third set and a 2-1 lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Quite the little tantrum from Draper there. He'd need to get his head back in order for the next set!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Vukic getting everything back, nothing worse. Can see why Draper is losing the plot. 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭klr87

Pegula looks to be going out. She can't handle the power of Danilovic.

Draper hanging in there, just about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,937 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Think Draper is on the way out. Everything is going right for Vukic, then again he is playing out of his skin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,731 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

If i had to put a tenner on this, I'd put it on Vukic right now, he seems to have all the luck and momentum at the right time
