I will buy one to leave collect dust until its hacked so I don't get caught out like I did with the original having to scrounge around years later to find one that was hackable.

At last. Will probably wait a while to get one. Depends on launch titles.

Nice that they make special mention that it's backwards compatible.

And Mario Kart looks pretty good

I don't think I will bother with this. I used my Switch playing Mario Odyssey. Captain Toad and I played a bit of Zelda BOTW. And it was just left gathering dust.

I wouldn't mind one, but would find it hard picking up a non OLED anything now. We've been spoiled!

I assume there'll be a refresh in a couple of years with an OLED screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,898 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

It looks a bit cheap. They could have done something better with the dock too.

    Also…. Super Nintendo Switch….

I imagine the Direct is going to be a better source of information, such as details about the screen.

But I think it's likely to be an OLED screen, or similar.

    Cheap?

I think it looks like an upgrade from the Switch, with just enough visual changes to make it clear it's part of the same Switch family of consoles.

It doesn't look any less a decent piece of kit than a Steamdeck.

Not for certain, but most analysts seem to think it will be LCD.

Which would be a step backwards if true. Even if they have both LCD and OLED options at launch that would be fine, the OLED being the more expensive option of course.
This is going to be painful waiting 2 months to get more concrete details.

Seeing chatter about the joycons being able to double as a mouse...hmmmm that could be very cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,014 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Wonder if the games that won't be playable are just ones that rely on the hardware, like Labo and Ring Fit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,710 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Ring fit should be playable, presumably labo won't be because of the different sized console

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,014 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Yeah if can sync the Switch joycons Ring Fit will still be playable

Pokemon Day in 5 weeks would I be a dreamer to think we will see footage of Legends Arceus on a Switch 2 or would Ninty be their usual cautious cagey selves and show us a potential launch title on (first time ever using this) last gen Switch

24 karts on that grid in that video...

    Massive Multiplayer Mario Kart anyone?

The price is a very interesting aspect of this console. I wonder will they sell it at the same price as the current Switch, and drop that by e.g. 100 quid.

I can't see myself getting it for a while unless there is a really compelling game like something of the class of BOTW. And also because I've a load of stuff to finish on the last Switch 😁

It's basically what you'd expect from a sequel to the Switch. It's not a new console, but a next iteration. So it's really just an upgraded Switch. Mostly the same with a few quality of life upgrades. Bigger screen, better joycons, and faster CPU/GPU.

People online whinging because it's not drastically different but i dunno what they expected. If there was a Gamecube 2, you'd be expecting a little purple box with a few smoothed edges and faster CPU. Can't complain really.

We get a lot of use out of the Switch in our house. It suits us perfectly, and this is the same but with better graphics and new games. As they say: If it's not broke, don't fix it!

At least they didn't name it the "Switch U"!! 😉

Ach, the people online whinging would always find something to whinge about, either it's too similar to what's already there or it's too different, or the old perennial "It can't compete with the hardware in the PS5 or Xbox hardware".

I have to assume that an unspoken primary goal for Nintendo is to avoid doing what they've done twice this century - which is to follow up a console perceived to be fairly successful with one that dies on its arse. The Wii U's two-flusher commercial performance was disastrous and, now that they have consolidated their handheld and under-TV hardware lines, they can't afford another fumble like that.

Ah now, I think it is new hardware in the same way the most recent two Xbox console generations have been new.

What you have described is more than a update to the Switch, it's a new console with new capabilities, just a familiar design because the OG Switch has been so successful and iconic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,940 ✭✭✭The_B_Man

Well yes and no. Obviously it has different internals but its a Switch. You can switch between handheld and TV, and you can click on and off the joycons.

The different internals will give it new capabilities if you mean "better graphics". It's not like the Wii → Wii U which had an obvious added capability in the controller with a screen. It's just a faster Switch. But I'm happy with that because the current Switch suits us perfectly. The current Switch, but faster, is exactly what I want.

Actually i want more reliable joycons. All mine are gone to shite, but the Pro Controller is great. If they fix the joycons then it's perfect!

Although now i type this out, I'm thinking i could nearly just stick with the Switch. All they play are Mario Wonder and 3D land. We also play Mario Party so unless there's some new stuff in the next Mario Party, it's nearly not worth the upgrade. We'll see though. The rumour about the mouse joycon would be brilliant if it enabled some RTS like StarCraft and the like!!

Forgive me if this has been addressed a million times but...now there's a new Switch, is there any reason to think a new Zelda or proper Mario might be revealed any time soon? April I suppose? Any rumours or anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,664 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Seen on Reddit -

The Switch 2 trailer is 2 minutes 22 seconds long (222).

There are 2 months, 2 weeks and 2 days between January 16th (trailer date) and April 2nd (direct date).

Switch 2 release date on June 17th? (2 months, 2 weeks and 2 days after April 2nd).

That's a very Nintendo thing to do. 🙂

Oh I hope so, just before my birthday too...🥳

That's a very Nintendo thing to do. 🙂

Have they done something like that before?

June 18th is a Wednesday though - looking at the Switch, Wii U and 3DS dates the launch dates vary by territory but typically Thursday through Sunday.

But let's not let that get in the way of numerology 😜

I changed to June 17th in my post. I ran the date calculations through CGPT.

Definitely will be some 3D Mario reveal i would say, hasn't been any new one Since 2017. Maybe not with Zelda since we had TOTK recently. I expect an announcement for Wind Waker HD and/or Twlight Princess as drip feeds to the next new 3D Zelda.

My prediction would be Mario Kart and Metroid Prime 4 (cross gen for the latter) at launch, and then a new mainline Mario in autumn / before Christmas. Based on sweet FA, but would expect something similar to the Switch. They’ve been cooking long enough that there’s obviously plenty of good stuff that’ll be ready to go quickly.

I think they will hold off on MP4 till the install base is bigger. It's not a system seller compared to a Mario Kart (64.27M), a Mario Odyssey (28.5M) or a Zelda (32.29 or 21M). Dread only sold 3M, Prime Remastered just broke 1M.

I can see a Pokemon (that is actually just a Switch version that has some Switch 2 enhancements), a 3D Mario and Mario Kart.
