I saw Matthew Devine was starting for Corinthians, thought senior contracted pros couldn't play division 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭RuPi

Must be on a development deal for a season before fully going senior. If a development player makes six starts or ten appearances for their province then they would be ineligible for the remaining rounds.

DDevelopment Contracted players able to play division 2 unless they play for their province like rupi says in his post. Devine likely on.a Development contract before moving to a full contract next season

Fai cup final got 38000 yesterday. Record for non dublin teams. Overall record is 43000.

While club rugby will never get attendances like that what do people think is a realistic target you could aim for with right promotion pricing etc

I mulled this point over a year or 2 back when asking a question about a hypothetical scenario where the provinces are dissolved and AIL becomes the pro league in Ireland.

Being honest. I don't think there is any scenario where clubs would be getting a regular attendance like that in the short or medium term.

Yes the FAI cup final pulled in a healthy crowd. But the LOI attendances are far south of that on a day to day basis. Rovers are the best attended club and had an average draw of just over 6k this season.

    https://www.transfermarkt.com/league-of-ireland-premier-division/besucherzahlen/wettbewerb/IR1/plus/?saison_id=2024

What is encouraging from their perspective of the league is the average and total attendance is increasing year on year and even going back to 2019 the numbers are up a lot.

In the context of the AIL. The facilities first and foremost would need work if clubs want to make a serious push at getting more numbers in.

Hinch, Marys, Tarf, Terenure, Young Munster, City of Armagh, Lansdowne and Garryowen are all top flight AIL teams who don't have close to meaningful facilities to have 1500+ spectators at a game.

Not suggesting a regular attendance at all but one off finals it should be an aim to really build on the attendances for the finals.

Yes regular attendancea for loi games are much less than that but the fai cup final is really built up well, priced well and well attended

Garryowen Would be better than most of those clubs for getting higher attendances. As do Mary's with decent terraces. Areas around pitch. What exactly would you see as meaningful facilities to get far more attending games BTW?

I don't think it is realistic to be honest. There was a point when it might have been, but we've gone the other way and backed the provinces.

I remember going to AIL games in the 90s when my Dad was still playing and our whole family would spend our whole Saturday etc down in the club. There would routinely be similar crowds at a lot of AIL games back then to what the LOI gets now for regular season games for plenty of teams, and equally back then I remember going to Leinster, Munster, Connacht games with c. 500-1,000 people at them. That obviously shifted.

I don't think any club has the sort of numbers of members or associated hangers on to get to c. 40k attendances for a final.

ThThis Isn't about going against backing the provinces. We're well beyond that.im saying we should be building AIl final to nearer to what the fai have with fai cup final. Doing more to get people who are members of their clubs attending AIL games. there's plenty here who never or rarely go to club games we should be doing more to change that. There's something wrong with the sport for many people if the only games they go to is professional games.

As someone else said, you should paste links into the box for them. Press the button that looks like this [< >] , then paste the link. Makes them clickable for everyone.

AIL in the 90s would draw 10k + alot of the time especially for local derbies....I was at a Shannon v Bucs game in Ballinasloe with thousands at it..…

42-15 win for nenagh. Total dominance. Across so much of game. 5 tries to 2.

Armagh impressive against cookies. Who will be frustrated with their performance espec penalty count. Good game. Thought crowd poor enough though.

Lansdowne beat sligo 76-12 in Bateman cup semi last night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭FtD v2

They could have scored 100 tbh. Incredibly one sided game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,435 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Not there only reporting score but no surprise even with lansdowne not setting ail alight. They're in 1a while sligo not doing best jn 2b.

Corinthians struggling without a lot of their academy talent, Sean Naughton in particular I'd say. Watched a decent bit of the Cashel game and while they played lots of good rugby, they really lacked control from 10.

Wouldn't say struggling without them. Not doing as well but playing Cashel very different to a lot of the teams they'll have played before that
