UCD come end of season should be alright even if there in a play off on either end of the table…. with the academies and development contracts on their roster they get most seasons should see them through tbh. Factor in some of their players are in the irish tour at the minute too. Thought there backline was pretty decent last week against lansdowne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,372 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Probably but they'd have to get the academy/pro guys playing few games through season as if they're in playoff they couldn't just drop them in for that...

Haven't seen them play so was just asking the question for those that might have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭luke9311

aye I see your point. Early stages yet haven’t seen any of there games yet bar the Lansdowne one myself also, but usually over the years it shows, there a much stronger side when they have thoughs players available. We played them before Christmas last season and while credits due where they played very well and beat us but wonder if they would have been as strong without without the likes of Boyle McGuire spicer etc etc. they were close to relegation play off a season or two ago finishing just ahead of Shannon and wonder if they would have been in it if they didn’t have that access tbh.

Buccaneers really struggling, seems odd that they don't seem to have any Connacht academy players. Noticed Shane Jennings and Oisin McCormack are with Garryowen now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,868 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

They'd be in a heap of trouble if they went down to 1B too.

Leinster have shown they want their academy folks playing 1A rugby.

In the same vein as my comment above, 1A and 1B is really the only place where the provinces see there being meaningful developmental minutes.

It's a huge pity for Connacht clubs from a representation POV.

I wonder if Nenagh Ormond might geographically benefit from this too. They're no further from Galway than Shannon

Might and even more so for any connacht guys athlone based but would be surprised if they got any

Some top of the table clashes in division 1 this weekend.

In 2A the 4 teams with 3 BP wins from 3 all not facing each other. Will they all keep that streak going.

Will be keenly watching Nenagh v Belvo.

This will be Nenagh Ormonds biggest test of their 1B credentials so far.

Belvo were quite responsible for their own demise against Rock.

Nenagh were impressive against Wesley but they looked vulnerable at scrum time. Belvo gave Rock a heap of trouble in this set piece, got a load of go forward ball in the maul and repelled Blackrocks efforts there a few times.

A good top of the table clash incoming

The semi-finals of the Energia All-Ireland Bateman Cup have been confirmed for next month with the four Provincial winners confirmed.

Lansdowne will host Connacht champions Sligo on Friday, November 22nd on the Aviva Stadium Back Pitch.

The other semi-final sees Garryowen at home to Instonians on Saturday November 23rd

Been a fun season so far.

That Trinity win was massive last weekend. Could see their season go sideways if they don't win that one.

Armagh got a massive result in last round as well. This weekend, i think the top of the table game will be very telling. Nenagh coming up and being so good is a fun story but this will be a big test.

2A is kind of crazy as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,372 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Bit Dismissive to just say its a fun story. No? Yeah this will be big test. T

2A really is 4 very strong teams. Next week when two of them finally meet should be good. Corinthians against instonians.

    Actually, yea fair enough.

What i meant is that i didn't expect them to come up and immediately threaten promotion again. This weekend will be a big test. Sorry about that.

what caused the demise of trinity college? They’ve already lost two games in 1B

Didn't get to a game today anyone else at a game.

LLost Players, who've graduated and guys coming through not as good yet. Trinity have traditionally not been a top flight club. Bar 1 or 2 seasons before 2015 when they went up to 1A they've traditio ally been a division 2 side.

No footage of the Belvo Nenagh game which is disappointing.

    Seemed like a right tussle.

The 2 games to be live streamed BF Sports Analysys on the 26/10/2024 are UCD v St Mary's and Terenure v City of Armagh

Corinthians going strongly, impressive considering at least a third of their starting team are teenagers by my reckoning. Looks like they're playing a very ambitious shape, with Naughton being an excellent pivot for them.

It was his line break beating 2 tacklers and nice offload that led to their last try. Also setup another try with an impressive cross field kick in the 1st half

Tarf look the most consistent at the moment, IMO. Hinch motoring well but I don't know if they will sustain it. Expected more from that garryowen side. Goes to show, having a more settled team can often be better and not to be relying on pros. Con are shaky but won't be too far away come business end. The cookies are hot and cold.

It is wide open tho. If you had to pick now, who would be your top 4?

    clontarf

I saw Matthew Devine was starting for Corinthians, thought senior contracted pros couldn't play division 2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭RuPi

Must be on a development deal for a season before fully going senior. If a development player makes six starts or ten appearances for their province then they would be ineligible for the remaining rounds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,372 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

DDevelopment Contracted players able to play division 2 unless they play for their province like rupi says in his post. Devine likely on.a Development contract before moving to a full contract next season

Fai cup final got 38000 yesterday. Record for non dublin teams. Overall record is 43000.

While club rugby will never get attendances like that what do people think is a realistic target you could aim for with right promotion pricing etc

I mulled this point over a year or 2 back when asking a question about a hypothetical scenario where the provinces are dissolved and AIL becomes the pro league in Ireland.

Being honest. I don't think there is any scenario where clubs would be getting a regular attendance like that in the short or medium term.

Yes the FAI cup final pulled in a healthy crowd. But the LOI attendances are far south of that on a day to day basis. Rovers are the best attended club and had an average draw of just over 6k this season.

    https://www.transfermarkt.com/league-of-ireland-premier-division/besucherzahlen/wettbewerb/IR1/plus/?saison_id=2024

What is encouraging from their perspective of the league is the average and total attendance is increasing year on year and even going back to 2019 the numbers are up a lot.

In the context of the AIL. The facilities first and foremost would need work if clubs want to make a serious push at getting more numbers in.

Hinch, Marys, Tarf, Terenure, Young Munster, City of Armagh, Lansdowne and Garryowen are all top flight AIL teams who don't have close to meaningful facilities to have 1500+ spectators at a game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,372 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Not suggesting a regular attendance at all but one off finals it should be an aim to really build on the attendances for the finals.

Yes regular attendancea for loi games are much less than that but the fai cup final is really built up well, priced well and well attended

Garryowen Would be better than most of those clubs for getting higher attendances. As do Mary's with decent terraces. Areas around pitch. What exactly would you see as meaningful facilities to get far more attending games BTW?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I don't think it is realistic to be honest. There was a point when it might have been, but we've gone the other way and backed the provinces.

I remember going to AIL games in the 90s when my Dad was still playing and our whole family would spend our whole Saturday etc down in the club. There would routinely be similar crowds at a lot of AIL games back then to what the LOI gets now for regular season games for plenty of teams, and equally back then I remember going to Leinster, Munster, Connacht games with c. 500-1,000 people at them. That obviously shifted.

I don't think any club has the sort of numbers of members or associated hangers on to get to c. 40k attendances for a final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,372 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

ThThis Isn't about going against backing the provinces. We're well beyond that.im saying we should be building AIl final to nearer to what the fai have with fai cup final. Doing more to get people who are members of their clubs attending AIL games. there's plenty here who never or rarely go to club games we should be doing more to change that. There's something wrong with the sport for many people if the only games they go to is professional games.

As someone else said, you should paste links into the box for them. Press the button that looks like this [< >] , then paste the link. Makes them clickable for everyone.

AIL in the 90s would draw 10k + alot of the time especially for local derbies....I was at a Shannon v Bucs game in Ballinasloe with thousands at it..…
