My Dad had his done. Take it easy on the recovery. He did too much too soon and ended up with a hernia and needed another op.

Jesus. What kind of recovery time am I to expect?

    squat

My left shoulder, which has given me trouble on bench press for the best part of a year but not on squat, has started giving me trouble squatting now, and not on bench press. Typical.
it took an age to warm up and even at that it wasn’t right.
I worked up to 100Kg x 5 and it felt heavy. It’s been a while since I squatted.
Any time I re rack the weight these days I roll the bar a little left and right to make sure it’s re racked properly. Today I did that and thought to myself “these roller J cups are great “. Then stood back confidently only to have 60kg come crashing down on the left. I’m always one brain fart away from the A&E.
Thankfully the plate landed securely on the spotter arm and no injuries were had

My apologies, but I do enjoy a good stupid gym injury story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

me too. Unfortunately it’s usually me playing the star role. Wouldn’t mind only I went to the extra effort of dropping the j cups 15mm when I built them to make re racking flawless.

Ah no, he just felt grand after it. Was told to take it handy for 6 weeks but made it to 3 weeks and started back doing all of the things.

    Bench press

    70kg x 5

    77.5kg x 3

    85kg x 1

Wasn’t the worst 1 rep. Good bit weaker these days. Body weight unintentionally down to 84kg.

    squat

    100kg x 3

    120kg x 1

    130kg x 1

I needed to lift heavy ish today to give myself the reassurance that my body was capable as lately squat has been awful. Not overly heavy but happy it went up relatively easy.
My shoulder was a tiny bit stiff, nothing compared to the last day.

    yesterday was deadlift

    Worked up to 160 x 3 then a single 170. Was ok.
    today bench

    70kg x 5 x 5

Toying with doing a version of advanced 5/3/1 which is basically 5x5, 5x3, 5x1.
might be getting my operation in December so don’t really want to go full into a new program then stop lifting heavy for the best part of 2 months

I'd say you're better off starting into it and making some progress before your forced break. The alternative is spinning your wheels for 8 weeks and then not lifting for 2 months or so

    squat 100kg x 5 x 5

    Today

    Bench 75kg x 5 x 3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    deadlift 130kg x 5 x 5

    Surprisingly taxing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    bench press

    80kg x 5 x 1

    Handy enough tbh.
Thinking of adding in a back day to stretch the bench pressing out a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    squat

    110kg x 5 x 3

Not too bad. Not easy either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Bench press

    72.5kg x 5 x 5

Doing all the lateral raises for benching warmups has definitely made that lift stronger and shoulders looking more defined.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Deadlifting

    140kg x 5 x 3

Not as taxing as day 1. These were grand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    squat

    120kg x 5 x 1

    Not too bad.
did a back day sat morning to break up the benching a bit

    Bench press

    77.5kg x 5 x 3

First 3 sets were tougher than the final 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    this morning

    Deadlift 150kg x 5 x 1

    Handy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Bench press

    82.5kg x 5 x 1

Mixed bag. Some easy some hard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    squat 105kg x 5 x 5

These got easier as the sets went on. Left shoulder is stiff and lacking flexibility. Had to widen my grip on the last 2 sets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Bench press 75kg x 5 x 5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Bench 80kg x 5 x 3

Operation coming up early December. Tricep extensions for 6 weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,766 ✭✭✭✭Alf Veedersane

    How did surgery go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    good thanks.
the usual soreness and tenderness but being honest I feel like I could lift heavy tomorrow and it’s only been a weeks recovery. I’ve been warned not to so I’ll take the advice of the medics. I’ll definitely start back on some kind of lifting that doesn’t engage my core in the next week. Just to restart the habit of getting up at stupid o clock.

    been watching this tread lads

    Are ye doing much cardio?

Used lift heavy when much younger

    Now just stick with cardio

    And the machine weights

( too much treadmill I admit and probably not enough weights)

    Hard to get a balance

I do a bit of hill/ mountain climbing aswell as walking

I did a little bit of cardio last year for a few months then stopped. Went for a 5k run with my ten year old before the operation. The last 400metres is at an incline of 35degrees then there’s a further 100meters at 45degrees. It’s a great circuit if I could stick to it. He likes it so I’ll do it with him going forward now and again. I’m restarting BJJ in February so that’ll be my cardio if I don’t die doing it.
