Ah yes! I didn't even think of ski, but that would work from Zurich of course. Combo with christmas markets and fondue and gluwein. Zermatt and Verbier are a train away, and that's a really stunning journey through the mountains in the snow.

Connected through to Hurghada on the Red Sea in Egypt with Swiss last October. 90 Min layover. Was spot on. 950 return business class .

It seems like a no brainer to me. The only explanation I have is that either Zurich might pump up the landing charges, or Swiss might have higher aircraft demand elsewhere, for the ski season. But I know a lot of people who would use it, they're currently going to Dublin. Aer Lingus running down the Munich frequency to winter once-weekly looks strange to me too. The price is high too, I'm not sure whether they're getting many passengers.

Lufty increasing Frankfurt next year, new Wednesday flight added. Same times as this summer

Edinburgh now features as a destination from Cork on Aerlingus app (though no dates up). Wasn’t there before. Surprised by that. Would have thought Southampton was more likely for Emerald

The dates are up for Feb 7th, 9th and 10th. I think it's for rugby or something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 fjr13

Yes it's just one off extra capacity for The 6 Nations , Scotland vs Ireland match on Feb 9th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭TheBetsy

Tuesdays are looking very quiet this winter, just 17 departures today!

Interestingly more Aer Lingus departures (8) than Ryanair (7), probably safe to say this hasn't happened since before covid!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

Ryanair seem to only use 2 of the 3 based aircraft on Tuesdays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

Wednesdays are even quieter: 6 Ryanair Deps, 7 Aer Lingus

Indeed, shame neither airline were willing to start a new route this winter to get better utilisation of their fleet. Any of Prague, Warsaw, Lisbon, Madrid, Berlin would surely be successful as a city break destination

I know a lot of people who talk about "Christmas Markets" and you'd assume there's some appetite for mountain holidays even this early in the season. Kaprun and Hintertux already seem to be open since the start of October. So I don't see why Salzburg or Munich wouldn't be worth try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭TheBetsy

Munich runs weekly from 21 Dec. I don't see why twice weekly year round wouldn't work. Airport fees are high in Germany which perhaps doesn't help. Salzburg also available on ski charter from same date

I'd say "xmas markets" are over as a fad. How many garden shed expos does one really need to go to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭hans aus dtschl

    You're probably right.

The current iteration of the Salzburg Christmas Market is celebrating its 50th year this year, with the earlier version running since the 15th century. I'd say the lads who attended the early ones are probably fairly bored of them by now alright!

It used to be daily, or near-daily. I can't get my head around it. Even an extra 1 midweek there would surely make sense. Or extend Zurich to year-round as loads have said. Obviously the people running the numbers know far more than me, but it seems like there should be demand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭TheBetsy

Unfortunately demand doesn't always mean (sufficient) profit

I’m off to the Xmas markets in Berlin this year. Having to trek to Dublin for the flight. A Berlin flight from Cork would answer all my prayers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭TheBetsy

I don't thinks Berlin is likely to happen any time soon to be honest. Ryanair are retracting massively in Germany at the moment due to high charges, and Aer Lingus seem more interested in Sun routes. Lufthansa don't have a base in Berlin. Eurowings maybe, but they don't even serve Dublin from Berlin...

Berlin is pretty low yield. I've gotten some great deals ex DUB, on fairly half full Aer Lingus flights.

I hate to be that guy, but…

    That Guy

The German aviation market is in something of a crisis at the moment. Ryanair isn't the only one reducing their activity in Germany at the moment. German holiday airline Condor is pulling five aircraft out of Germany and basing them in other European countries for cost reasons, whilst German airports are still 16% below pre-COVID passenger and business levels.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa is starting a cost-cutting program after their profits cratered despite their aircraft being fuller than ever before, while at the same time facing legal action and possible strikes about the company's plans to replace their regional subsidiary, Lufthansa Cityline, with the newly founded City Airlines. The latter move is designed to get around the "scope clauses" that unions negotiated and that limit the size of aircraft that Cityline can use. That's one of the reason why they use the CRJ-900 on the Cork route, by the way.

As for Eurowings, they are suffering from the same cost trouble as Condor and Lufthansa. Whilst they haven't moved any aircraft abroad yet, they've cancelled over 1000 flights in Hamburg for next year and are also withdrawing from the Düsseldorf-Berlin route, although only over Christmas so far.

Given the above, I wouldn't hold my breath for any additional connections to Germany, unless Cork Airport is able to negotiate some overnight basing arrangement akin to what KLM is doing. The fact that Lufthansa is adding a weekly rotation to Frankfurt over the summer is already a good sign given all of the above.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Very interesting. At least it makes some sense: as others have said above the demand is there but the profitability likely is not.

Looks like Rome switches back to Fiumicino in April, 3x weekly loaded in the app. Can't wait for Ryanair/Cork Airport to announce this as a "new" route 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 fjr13

    at least its back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,271 ✭✭✭airy fairy

How far out is this airport? Been planning on bringing teens anywhere in Italy for a few days. Ryanair times and destinations are so limited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭TheBetsy

FCO is about 30 or 40 mins in a taxi to Rome central

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭TheBrownBird32

Aer Lingus going to axe AMS route apparently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,052 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Jesus, why. Surely that route does incredibly well, even with the KLM competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,656 ✭✭✭yagan

Anytime I go to Rome I stay near Termini as there's regular trains to Flumincino and buses to Ciampino. Termini area is an easy walk to all the main sites and a lot cheaper than the main tourist areas.
