The travesty of yesterday is that the blowout in Breffni Park got more coverage than the upset in Pairc Ui Rinn, which wasn’t on live tv at all and was down the running order for the Saturday Game. I get that having sent the crew to Dr Hyde Park they then had to lead with Roscommon v Mayo, and nobody really predicted the result in Cork. And the Dubs will always bring the eyeballs regardless of how uncompetitive the game was.

    So, time to be cynical.

During the week we heard about a row in the GAA between the hurling counties (led by Wexford) and the football counties (led by Sligo) over which day (Saturday or Sunday) the All Ireland hurling quarter finals and the Tailltean Cup semi finals should be on. In the event the schedule was left unaltered.

This dominated the GAA media during the week, and what absolutely nobody was talking about was that the All Ireland SFC preliminary QFs would be all exclusive to GAAGO.

Those games produced some surprising results, with some big teams gone, and quite rightly led off The Saturday Game last night.

I don’t want to belittle the row, which may well have been A Big Thing, but it certainly distracted from some big Sam Maguire Cup games being exclusive to GAAGO while the arguably less important Tailteann Cup gets the full Sunday Game treatment later today.

The Package GAA Go is out to market. I am not sure if this is the end of GAAGO

I don’t think it’s the end of GAAGO; but maybe the end of GAAGO as a player in the Irish market.

Looks like this is a remedy which has been forced upon them by the CCPC who are clearly unhappy with the way this tender was originally run (indeed, if it was tendered at all).

I don’t think the conditions that caused Sky to leave have changed at all; I think if they want Sky back they’ll need to move the Championship back to its traditional May-September window. Equally VMTV have made clear their rights strategy is to buy rights that they don’t have to act as host broadcaster for, which they’d be required to do here.

There was talk of the GAA pushing the games back to late august but the players dont want this and are happy with the current set up.

But think of the fun in a few months on joe duffy when netflix when the rights.

Just do not mistake this for the GAA having given in or up on GAAGO or caving to public or political pressure. The only people they are caving to is the CCPC because they know they broke the terms upon which the CCPC approved the JV in the first place and/or that they know there were indeed issues with the tender process first time round (which TG4 and VMTV have both alleged).

The outcome of the process may well be GAAGo retaining the rights.

Would it be possabile for the GAA to bring in an independent broadcasting company to produce and stream the GAA Go games for them like the League of Ireland does or would that be to much hassle?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Of course they could, but they’d have to consider that in tandem with the other party in their JV, who are also the current producers of their coverage.

I do know that RTE’s URC coverage is now independently produced, even though it still features RTE Sport branding and on air talent. (The same company is also producing the URC on TG4, which is why they have identical opening titles). The point is that I don’t think RTE have philosophical objections to putting sports coverage out to indies.

Was LoI TV a spin off out of a similar deal with RTÉ, URC TV is a similar deal with RTÉ also.

RTÉ foot the bill for the broadcast costs while GAA, URC and FAI provide the rights, this is valued at 50:50 of the business.

Each company then charges a fee to the audience.

GAA, LoI and URC can make this deal with any broadcaster.

IMO all three should have been in the one place. €180 is the cost of each, seems expensive IMO, on top of other established competitors.

Sky main reason really for GAA rights is as a filler when they are light on live summer sports. If sky got the rights on it and aired on say Challenge TV on saorview would the advertising cover them compare to behind the paywall as they would have a bigger viewership that way in ireland while keep it on sky sports in the UK?

I think the issue there is for satellite customers, Challenge's Irish opt out is broadcast in the clear, they would have to encrypt it on Satellite. Though really this is the case for RTÉ and VMTV, so wouldn't be that big of an issue really.

I don't know why Sky haven't bought up FTA sporting rights for Sky Mix.

Expression of interests were due back on Monday for the GAAGO package of games. It would be interesting to see how many came back to the GAA.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Unless there’s a leak to the media or unless nobody came back, we’ll probably never know for certain, sporting organisations never say and it’s not in their interest to do so.

I wonder will we see movement one way or another before christmass. It was a handy present to buy!

Was just in the process of trying to buy my old man a sub for 2025. He still maintains the 2024 sub was the best gift I ever gave him..

    What's the story?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

No announcement yet on the retendering of the package GAAGO had been awarded.

They can’t sell any subs until they know they’ve something to sell.

Looks like GAA will go solo with GAA Go.

Yes i read that.also gaago retains their rights.TG4 outbid.

The suggestion of a name change from GAAGO to GAATV is an odd one - it’s so close to the current name that if you were trying to run away from previous bad publicity it’s literally the last name you would choose.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

What is being said on Morning Ireland this morning is that the GAA have not awarded the rights but are retaining them for themselves. That’s a slightly different matter to saying they’ve been re-awarded to GAAGO, a separate legal entity. A committee is apparently to be set up to decide how best they be utilised.

GaaGo made a profit last year. I wonder have the accounts in croke park run the numbers and said if we keep this in house and run it ourselfs we will be better off?.

    RTE report:

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2024/1219/1487374-gaa-exploring-purchase-of-rtes-gaago-stake/

I keep saying the comparison with NFL isn’t apt - the NFL Network offering of games has gotten worse and is now limited to the international series and a handful of late season games. And it’s been up for sale for two years and two almost done deals with Apple and ESPN respectively both fell through at the last ditch.

In other words: owning your own network might not be the holy grail the GAA seems to think it is.

Looks like GaaGo have deleted all their catch up games except two 2023 league matches originally broadcast by BBC . They have an upcoming match featuring Tyrone and Derry advertised for Saturday 25th, most likely simultaneously broadcast with BBC NI or the Iplayer. It appears to be free to watch.

TG4 & RTE2 will show a number of live games on that Saturday and Sunday.

What is the truth with the Cork/Limerick game on saturday night there seams to be various reasons why it is not been shown.

Some reports are saying it will be on TG4 App but ots not confirmed.

    Screenshot_20250129-142044.png

The GAA website says it can be watched on Sport TG4 so that's a good indicator.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

As far as I know it has been confirmed for TG4 Player. The linear coverage will remain Donegal v Dublin.

Confirmation at GAA Congress that they have bought RTE's share of gaa go and rebranded to GAA+

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,306 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The rebrand hasn’t happened yet - still operating as GAAGO for Dublin v Derry tonight.

I’m given to understand it will take effect at the start of the Championship.

incidentally speaking of same, some odd stuff where the commentators seemed to be telling us there was more time left than the game clock was telling us. However it was the commentators that were correct - it seems GAAGO had not been stopping the game clock when the stadium clock was stopped - it hit 70 and the clock stopped but the game continued.

There were other graphics issues earlier in the game - the replay wipe going haywire in particular.
