Having been off the air since the middle of May with no disclosure as to why by any of the hosts, I see it's confirmed today that the Around the NFL podcast has been cancelled.

Dan and Marc no longer work for the NFL. Gregg will be launching a new podcast for NFL Media.

Never found it a great podcast to be honest, doesn't feel like much of a loss. I assume listener numbers have been dwindling.

I havent listed to ATN in some time but it has been such a mainstay and I am surprised to hear it has been cancelled. I suppose the space has become so competitive now and it’s hard to keep listeners who are spoilt for choice.

What other ones are people listening to? I used to love Football Outsiders but that was cancelled last season, I listen to the Athletic and the Irish NFL Pod mostly now. The Irish show is excellent in fairness to the lads that produce it

They seem to be tearing down the day to day NFL Network/Media stuff. Total Access was canned, Good Morning Football has disappeared for months and is moving to LA to cut costs. Lots of reporters and contributors were let go. All a poor look for an organisation that makes money hand over fist.

The TV sports networks in the US have wall to wall coverage nowadays with lots of big names as guests on their shows. Basically from early August right up until the draft it's on unless there is some live sports event they are covering. I'd imagine they have a lot of viewers or they wouldn't be on.

Colin Cowherd has a massive following on his show the herd.

This was by far my favourite NFL podcast and one of my all time favourite podcasts full stop. I've listened avidly for 10 years and was genuinely upset when Chris Wesseling passed away, having followed his first cancer battle and subsequent recovery, marriage and the birth of his son Lincoln. When they went daily during the pandemic it was one of the things that helped get me through lockdown. They were funny, relatable and had a genuinely deep love and knowledge for football and the whole world of NFL in general.

The news that Gregg Rosenthal has stayed on at the NFL ends any hopes for it continuing with the same group on another platform so this really is the end. Seems ridiculous to be this annoyed over a podcast but I genuinely am. Ill miss it alot.

Yeah it's a shame. I don't think anyone tuned in for any tactical deep dives or anything of that sort - there are plenty of other sources out there if that's what you're into.

For me, it was an easy way to keep up to date on what was happening around the league news-wise, and the comradery between the lads was good listening.

Admittedly, since work from home has become a mainstay, my podcast listening hours have been dramatically reduced so I didn't get to tune in as much in recent years.

I listened to every episode and went to the live show in London last year when I was home from Australia for a few weeks, so glad that event lined up with my trip. The lads have been part of my routine for over a decade and I'm gutted the show has ended. It was the most accessible and comprehensive round up podcast for the NFL as a whole for me.

No word from Dan or Marc yet but I'm hoping they go out on their own, I'd happily pay for it through Patreon or something similar. Dan is a brilliant host and I would tune into anything he does. Can't say the same about what sounds like a replacement show of sorts with Gregg and others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭al87987

Gutted at the news. Listened to every pod.

Dan had a great sense of humour which set the tone for the show and it didn't take itself too seriously but still informed.

The replacement show sounds a little too Gregg heavy and he never struck me as a great host, definitely a better analyst.

Hope the other two guys keep going, anybody any alternatives for NFL talk that doesn't get too technical?

    Heed the call.

Barely missed an episode in over a decade and now it's just gone. A real shame. They had great chemistry in the group and the recap episode was a staple of my Monday mornings from Sept to Jan. Losing Wess was a big blow, but they persevered and managed to keep it going.

    Can't believe it's finished 🙁

Awful awful decision by the NFL. As others have said I listened to it every episode. So while I listened to every episode, I didn't love it as much after Wess died because it wasn’t the same. He was a huge part of the magic and yeah it wasn’t the same. It’s the only NFL podcast that I used to listen to, and the lads were a huge part of growing the NFL in Ireland and the UK.

It looks like Dan and Marc have something cooking and I will be all aboard. Those two free of the NFL’s shackles could be something great.

The rumblings are that things may not be so rosy between Dan/Marc and Gregg after this.

Also, the first episode of Gregg's new podcast was released on YouTube yesterday. They had to turn off comments.

That’s a shame given how close they were from working together over the years.

Bit late to the party here but what a loss this podcast will be for the international listener especially. I've listened for 7+ years and genuinely felt like I knew the lads and their circle of friends and rolling guests. Wess passing away really touched me and I was genuinely sad about a fella I'd never me but felt I knew. He even wrote back to me personally once on instagram when I messaged him support.

The pod itself provided a nice balance of news, football knowledge and just a bit of craic. It was just at the right level for what I and so many others want. Not daily but frequent enough that you can keep up with them. Discussed all the teams, the games and news and kept it fairly light. So many people I know who follow the NFL in Ireland and UK listened to this. Always spoke of a great European listenership. Bizarre they cut something like this when they're clearly trying to expand the game over here. Loved all the silly segments they did like 'The Greybeards', 'GM App' or 'New Horizons Monday' for all the sacked management after the regular season ended.

I'd also pay for content Dan and Marc release if they go down that route but would worry about their bottom line considering they had unbelievable access to NFL media stuff. Not everyone is willing to pay! Also, a huge pity Gregg won't be with them but the abuse he is getting is outrageous. Sounds like he had some medical issue in his family and chose security and family over sticking with the lads which is understandable.

Be interesting to hear what actually went down whenever the lads do reappear and relations aren't damaged beyond repair!

The first episode just dropped and the opening gives a good explainer for how it all came about.

Enormous respect for Marc turning down a new contract and following Dan. Everybody needs a Marc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,112 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Glad to hear they'll be doing a Sunday flagship show, that's my favourite pod going.

It was interesting how they spoke about Gravedigger's departure from NFL Media and it being the first domino to fall for the old show. Big jump for him to join them from Fox but a great addition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,742 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

They’re only three shows in and it’s like they were never away.

Deshaun Watson is being sued again because why not. This one is slightly different to the 21 or so cases against him from before as he’s been accused of sexual assault.

Hopefully it'll let the Browns void unpaid salary!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I really don't know how I feel about that. Yes I want Watson to lose as much money as possible but the Browns signed him in the middle of all these allegations like they were unimportant so they don't deserve any relief over it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,111 ✭✭✭Christy42

Seems like it was an incident before his time with the Browns so I think they are still stuck with that contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

If he didn't make them aware of it I think they can get out of the contract. Thru might even look to recoup as much as they can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,414 ✭✭✭Guffy

I don't think they'll be able to recoup, it'll only be unpaid (voided years looking really good now) and only if undisclosed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The whole contract would have a clause about releasing everything from your past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,414 ✭✭✭Guffy

Surely it would be anything disclosed no? I mean, what if he gotten done for murder in 2022, hyperbolic maybe but not unprecedented.

Could see something like any misdemeanor being given a pass but felony charges would surely be a different thing. I obviously have no idea of his contract details though. Just wishful thinking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,732 ✭✭✭boccy23

I would say especially that contract because he had all the leverage.
