You would have to assume also that centre of gravity issues would limit the weight of cargo that can be loaded aft.

You can also be sure that no one else will be sending aircraft with literally millions of euros worth of sensitive electronics on a cargo run. However I do believe that the Air Corps will have put their hand up for the mission. Although it's really a token gesture, it may serve as a useful demonstration of the need for more than one or even larger dedicated aircraft. There's also political capital to be had internationally in sending a national aircraft into such situations.

Today would be a good day for government press release to announce the purchase of A A320 as the new state jet and extra 2 casa 295 transports. The media would be to busy to run with it.

Unless IAC are willing to buy new... C-130's aren't a bad idea, with the correct contract in place. You could easily source aircraft and parts for 15-20 years service. Bearing in mind one of the biggest overhaul facilities is just across the water in Cambridge (along with Sabena in Belgium) I'm sure they'd be delighted to have a regular customer so close on their books. Both will be in the Herc game for another 20-30 years at least, once their US mil and foreign mil contracts hold up.

That said, contract dependent... Irish Government don't really do them all too well.

If only we had a C130. But if we are looking at bringing a new rating in. This will take time and a lot of training. So we should buy new. Rather than looking at old Tech we should be looking at what out EU partners are using. I know people will go crazy at suggesting a A400. But it ticks so many boxes. Easy to skip due on production. Probably get EU support on finance. Has partner countries to support us on maintenance. EU supply chain. Can move a massive load of kit. While being built we can have crew in UK/Germany or France training and getting rated. If we say it is too big for our requirements. Who knows what the future will be like. Luxemberg has 1 unit and Belgium has 6 with another on order.

Them C130's are old hat! Better to move with the times and get Ann Embraer 390.

The Vampires and Provosts were new from the factory, as were the Alouettes and three out of four Doves. During the 1930s quite a few types (e.g. Ansons, Gladiators, Lysanders) were bought new as well. I would say that it was really only during the wartime and immediate post-war period that a lot of hand-me-downs of various types were acquired. In more recent times the Magisters were of course "pre-owned" too.

At least some of the chipmunks were brand new from De Havilland.

Is it the end of the road for Air Corps Hems? The HSE are tendering for a 3 base solution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭gossamerfabric

talks of Short Sherpa re-entering limited production. go to airliners.net for discussion that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,954 ✭✭✭roadmaster

But the Air Corps can not tender. What they can do is put a business case forward to the government to provide the service similar to what they did for SAR but that is down to the government of the day and if they will fund it.

Interesting this new HEMS service and fixed wing air Ambo is only 48 months. That seams very short for the level of investment a company has to put in. The fixed wing tender also says to be based at a dublin airport. More business for Weston?

Of course there is. Neither the Air Corps nor the Defence Forces are a competent entity.

A legal reference meaning they are not commercial, nor are they responsible for their own purse strings.

The wording for the Midlands base suggests it could be based somewhere like Athboy Airfield.

They are also very brave in the wording ofvthe tender mentioning value for money for the Midlands and Northwest bases. Local reps would see that as saying are the people of Midlands Northwest not worth saving

The Air Corps have a Tender out for inspection checks on the Learjet for the next 12 months. It must not be heading for the sunset just yet.

Its not worth much on the resale market if its certification isn't kept current.

Someone has to fly it off the island eventually.

Signing for a fancy new Gulfstream or Falcon would not go down well in the current climate, election not far away. I'd say its on hold.

    100%

In fact the best way to do it would be to announce a whole hape of big stuff all at once. The tankies are already at the limit of indignation.

TD Mick Barry, from a political party of crusty tankie traitors that demands that Ireland disband it's defence forces.

Whilst claiming the legacy of James Connolly, a man who fought with arms for Irish freedom & paid for his military resistance to British rule with his life.

As a Minister, he was let down by unserviceability of the Learjet, if I recall correctly. Let's hope that will be an incentive for him to see a decision made on a new aircraft. It's hardly likely to affect his party's support, in the greater scheme of things.

    optics…

Can’t see him wanting to make it a priority anymore than anyone else has since the Gulfstream was sold off. And frankly if he is willing to push a bit more in defence there’s plenty above that.

Sorry CS! I meant to say JET AIRCRAFT FOR MINISTERIAL AIR TRANSPORT AND BROADER UTILITY USE

Stop being such a pedant Dohvolle. I, and I'm sure others, are sick of it.

Ah now, it's a term used widely by the media - everyone from the smallest regional to the IT uses the term. No-one here made it up out of thin air. You may have a point in calling it 'lazy journalism' but having a go at people out for using the term is a little strong…..

Now take this with a pinch of salt but it looks like Air Corps 112 days will be over if the HSE Tenders come back within Reason. The current base in Rathcoole for the south, Knock Airport for the North West and they are looking at an Airstrip near Navan for Midlands and East.

Idea is coming up to an election they can say they are delivering on Health
