I wrote about them earlier in the thread. I'm not a fan of their kiln dried oak. Going back to tjomahony's crate of beech.

Happens to be down to €299 too

Would you have a link to your post (it's a big thread)? It is oak I'm after. Not sure about their descriptions, they seem to have two different large crate sizes

    2m - €515 - 810kg

    2.3 - €550 - 800kg

So the bigger more expensive crate is lighter.

Edit: the 2.3 page says 845kg on another part of the page.

Just to add my moisture meter is coming in above 20% for each and every piece I've tested. I'm cutting the blocks before testing too. Sometimes up to 30%.

Seeing mould develop on the outer wood which is something I've not seen in the beech.

Bear in mind I could have been just unlucky.

Some logs a bit small in the bags but that's not a major issue as they are useful for getting the fire going so I put these aside into a basket just for small starter and restarter logs. Its all birch - easy to get a fire going, burns hot and fast. I had been buying ash bags from a guy trading as "Heating Solutions" in Malahide. Google him - similar delivery time (under a week but he at least texts you the day before) which if you want ash is pretty good as it seems much harder to get in bags.

But back to Rathwood - so far I've only ordered their birch and the round briquettes.

Really like their briquette except they are 30cm (my stove is 25cm max) but break up easily. A full 2kg one in two large pieces burns for the guts of 2hrs per me. For me they are easier to store than logs as I have a shared external shed with a neighbour so limited space. I just stack them into a huge pile - 20 packs comes to around 1.35m.

Also you can take apart the palate and do what you will with it. I've only ordered the 33 piece and XL packs from them so no idea what hand truck delivery is like.

I'm on my 2nd order from them & have done the advanced order for a 625kg palate to come in early April which should take me well into the autumn.

The deliveries I typically find take 3-4 working days to arrive, they generally ship next working day after I order.

    I took a chance on Kenny's, sorry I did. Can't recommend them.

Well that's two of us so. I think I'll stick to the tried and tested from now on.

I see Stakelums and TJ O'Mahony's are both offering a crate of wood for ~€300 delivered. TJ's is Beech which I am used to and like whereas Stakelum's is a mixture of Beech and Maple. I have no experience of maple. Any thoughts?

Boyles fuels have 2cbm crates oak at €499 delivered which is excellent, think they have ash at this price too

No idea on maple, but O'Mahoney's beech is excellent and I only stopped buying it due to the price inflation.

Yep. I've bought beech from O'Mahony's and Stakelums before. Fine with both. Just need to know if the maple is a terrible / great idea.

Decent breakdown here, seems a bit better than Birch but Beech, Oak and Ash are the top three.

Thank you. It looks like they are maintaining the price but diluting the product (a bit) by mixing in the maple.

Maple = sycamore in Ireland. If its imported it could be sugar maple which is a much better firewood. There are also a few other "maples" that are better or possibly worse than sycamore.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    Sycamore isn't great is it?

I got that 360kg mixed deal from Rathwood last week for 190 euro.

Very impressed with the briquettes, very easy to light, great heat from them. The birch blocks and the bags of kindling are good too, both are bone dry and the kindling is nice and small.

I'd buy the same again if it comes back into stock at that price.

I was just looking at the delivery for Rathwood. I can't afford much more than the bulk bag at the moment but is delivery going to be an extra 30 on top? And in the terms they seem to say they don't deliver onto gravel, only kerbside...we're on a back road with a big gravel driveway so I presume they would actually leave it in the driveway?

My usual stickman has retired and I've just realised how spoilt we have been on price and delivery. I had been looking at kenny fuels but as above I'm a bit put off...I'm really just looking for a small load to get us through the last weeks as I've to fix one of the woodstores before restocking. Is there any other options for a smaller type load (around a bulk bag)?

They take the pallets off the truck using a trolley, the two times i've had deliveries they have wheeled the trolley up to the top of my driveway. I'd image doing that on a gravel path would be difficult though.

Rathwood fuels offering another 10% off when you use the code "SNOW" at checkout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭shoegirl

Doing "advanced discounts" too - extra 10% off if you waiting until early April and you can basically pay for it in 2 halves. 625kg now down to 208 if you are happy to wait til 5th April which is a snip. Already ordered at 20 euro more last week. The 440kg pallet is now 149!

Has anyone bought the oak from Rathwood before, any opinions? I swore I wouldn't buy the birch from them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭dubguy45

I haven't bought the oak but four orders of beach. The best value I found was the jumbo bag at current price €129. Logs are bigger and at 1.2 m3 and around 400kg, not bad. Crated logs have big amounts of small logs only fit for kindling. Net bags are similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,575 ✭✭✭SteM

This was my issue with the crated birch, to much kindling which I don't need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭dubguy45

If your heating rads and water with a stove their briquette packs burn dangerously hot. There really good at getting everything hot quickly just don't use too many at once. They are sold out unfortunately but managed to but 30 packs recently. You have to do the maths on all the bundles but free delivery is a game changer in the current gouging climate.

I can't find a way to "wait til 5th April". And I'm happy to wait.
