WHAT -- Are you absolutely bonkers? What about the lack of chademo? (only 2 left in the country) What about the horrendously slow charging on chademo (4 kWh) 🤣 😉 😀

But that's true for almost any car. I've self-serviced all of mine for the past 20 years - except when daft warranty terms required it.

Bought mine new in July 2022 - facelifted model with 19,500km driven since. Complaints first being the clumsy infotainment system, though hardly only a Leaf issue - it's probably only Tesla who've gotten it right. Collision warning and emergency braking systems are also too enthusiastic, have actually come close to causing me accidents driving in Dublin City. The main thing however is the poor range coupled with huge battery consumption over 90kph. While the car suited me perfectly when I bought it, my circumstances changed a year later with moving ~250km outside Dublin and having to make return trips every few weeks. The 40's range simply isn't capable for my needs these days, so I'll be changing it for something else as soon as I can. At absolute best, I get 200km from a full charge. But obviously the range is due to the small battery as opposed to an issue with the car itself.

Otherwise, it's been extremely reliable, a very comfortable place to be in the winter and I couldn't go back to anything without both heated seats and steering wheel. And the ride quality certainly isn't bad. Obviously not unique to the Leaf as an EV, but both acceleration / speed are both quite impressive in D-Mode and Eco off. The E-Pedal is a brilliant feature, 100% one-pedal driving that I believe isn't offered in many other brands? I can't think of a single build quality issue with it either. though the hard plastics in the boot seem to scratch easily.

And ironically, CHAdeMO has enabled me to ''skip'' the queue a few times at High Power charge points while everyone else was waiting for a CCS to free up.

I was supposed to get one in July 2022 in Dublin when I ordered end of March, or Early April. Deposit paid and all. 0% finance. Price agreed. Dark blue with black roof. Was looking forward to it having decided against the much more expensive Tesla Model 3. Then in July I was told it was delayed with no delivery date...just a vague guess from dealer. They told me that Nissan had paused production. My finance percentage was no longer guaranteed and the price was likely to climb despite the agreement. I would have been very happy to take delivery and the L40 would still suit my needs for my commute. Instead, I but the bullet and in late August, I ordered a grey M3 RWD, expecting delivery in March 2023. Within a couple of hours, my car was assigned to me and I took delivery in September only weeks after my order. Love it!

All that said, I'm still considering adding a Leaf 40 to my family fleet.

More power to you. Most people can't service ICE cars on their own though, hence why the independent garage network is so big

With EVs the specialist knowledge is lower again. There's no oil changes needed for example

For Nissan Leaf, a full service amounts to a health check, tyres, lights are in working order, changing the pollen filter and changing the brake fluid every three years.

They might check for a software update, Mine hasn't needed a software update from new. It's a 2014 reg 24kw. 10 years old and still drives like new. Great town car.

Although secondhand Leaf's are decent value now for the most part, I'd be more inclined to go for an MG4 if I was looking for a used hatchback EV. Mainly given the 350km Standard Range, and I love the blue. Though I'm not sure which is more preferable between equivalent spec levels.

    Hi

on the newer shape Nissan leafs from 2018 and 2019. In regard to the slow charge port connection - is this a type 1 or type 2 connection.

I know the original leafs from 2011 - 2018 are type 1 but not sure on above.

it’s on cold morning like this that I will miss the ability to remotely turn on the heat in the leaf 😞

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,203 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Mine goes through intermittent periods of not working as well. Thankfully currently running fine.

I always find that an email to Nissan tends to get it up and running again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,526 ✭✭✭obi604

See posts from above. It’s simply been discontinued for older cars due to 2g connectivity

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,203 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Yeah, I read that.

Just pointing out that often the newer models struggle too with the app not working.

Doesn't seem to be the most stable.

Have you tried the My Leaf app from the Playstore? It provides similar features to the official Nissan Connect app, and works very well, even when the Nissan app won't log in, or hangs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,203 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

MyLeaf app doesn't work unless your Nissan EV app is working.

It pulls the data from that. I do use it occasionally.

  • Registered Users Posts: 298 ✭✭myfreespirit

I've uninstalled the Nissan Connect app altogether, and the My Leaf app works perfectly fine 🤔

Should mention, this is with a 2021 Nissan Leaf, not the older model.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,203 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Mine is 2019, and know for a fact that if my Nissan EV isn't connecting and updating, then the MyLeaf app doesn't either.

Must be different for different people.

But it uses your Nissan Connect credentials to log in to MyLeaf app.

So I have had a leaf to test for the last week from the local dealers. 2020 40Kw premium and cold pack. 200Km was the most I could get out of it. I had to have the heater on at 20c and lowest fan setting - for windscreen and footwell.

Range for daily commute and kids activities in evenings was fine but come winter, it wont be enough. So will take their 2021 62Kw (same specs) for a couple of days next week to see.

I see on the clock that the 62Kw has a range of 400Km on the guess-o-meter. Any 62kw owners know how much they are getting on a full battery.

Looked also at the chademo charger availabilities on ESB Charger site (would rarely need to use these as we have an ICE as our main family car) and seems like there's a fair few of them out there. Would aim to keep this car for 5-6 years min and am wondering about the re-sale value when generally there'll probably be a lot fewer chademo by then.

Anyone else looking at second hand Leafs at the moment? Despite all the threads talking about EV secondhand prices going down I'm not seeing a huge amount of shift in the right direction. I know the asking price isn't always selling price, but the few dealers I've talked to haven't wanted to budge a whole lot and still seem to be shifting cars. I'm only looking at Tekna or SVE spec. On the chart below the blue are 40's and the orange are 62's. € 15-20K on 2019 cars that are ultimately 5 years old isn't exactly much depreciation on a € 30-35K car new. Anyone else finding the same? Hopefully there are deals to be done on private sales, but a few I've enquired on have sold already.

@bunderoon curious what sort of money the 62 you're checking out is going for? Different spec to what I'm hunting for but I'm interested in prices in general. EV Database suggests that with a mix of motorway/city driving the expected ranged is 285-390km depending on winter vs summer.

@g0g 26k for the 2021 SV Premium & Cold Pack 62Kw. I'll probably be able to get 1k or a little more off that.

62Km will be more than enough for my needs. Wont have to worry about daily range, no matter the season and also any future battery degradation implications.

My local dealer certainly isnt the cheapest around, but not the most expensive either. They do take extra care of their repeat customers, so theres some added benefit which wouldnt be reflected in the price.

2014 Nissan leaf here. Question - is it possible to stop the car charging from a physical button in the car or key fob ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,388 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

No, I don't think so. It was possible to stop charging by the APP and this is true if DC charging. You can also use your charger APP to stop the charge if you have a smart charger...like a Hypervolt for example.

Otherwise charging is stopped by killing the power supply, letting the cycle complete, or by disconnecting the plug.

If you have a timed charging setup you can start charging by hitting the timer override button on the dash. But otherwise the charging will begin immediately if the EVSE ("charger") is live.

If AC you can press the button at the top of the AC plug if the car is unlocked and this will end the charge. Not sure on DC but I think most chademo chargers have similar

Yup that's the one - can be slightly different depending on the plug but type 1 will have that and it will end the charge if (and only if!) the car is unlocked
