    Oliver has taken the job.

It's Oliver Callan, the permanent host at 9am. Just announced on BOC's show.

Opportunity missed to save some dosh and make Claire Byrne work for her pay!

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

Looks like Callan has the gig. Discussing it with Brendan now.

Poor Oliver, he'll have to handle 5 hours a week with frequent holidays no doubt and also doing a weekly satire thing. He'll be knackered.

It won't be anything like the last waste of space was getting anyway.

2 year contract, starts Monday week. Expects Callan’s kicks to continue as an independent production

    150k a year, 2 year contract.

Could have saved that with extending Byrne's show 9-12

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

AFAIK radio show only, I only caught him saying the amount and contract and that he'd have to be above 180k to be in the 'top ten'

Callan's Kicks is an independent production.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

From what he said, €150k is just for the radio show. Callans Kicks deal not finalised as yet, sounds like it’s a separate matter

Can’t argue with that. An hour in the morning is a waste of time. Either extend Claire Byrne’s slot or give Louise Duffy an extra hour.

Was hoping Shay Byrne would get it so I could listen to rising time more .Its a bit of a difficult slot to fill between the current affairs either side of it agree with others thinking that the two following shows could have been extended to fill the morning .

    150 k a year?

RTE up to their old tricks. Ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭pureza

    It's outrageous

    A 5 hour week

    A show anyone could do

    That's 1000 licence fee's

Lads. 150k for a 1 hour show a day. And according to Callan (or so says twitter), there was no negotiation, that's what rte offered and it's what he accepted.

    Bonkers stuff.

Nice money if you can get it. Clearly far better terms than the low pay radio gigs on offer in the UK.

Callan is so undeserving. It shakes my faith in the fairness of life when people like him succeed!

Tubridy was on 450k for the radio programme and the Late Late Show. So if 150k is the value of 5 hours of radio, he was paid 300k to continue presenting the flagship TV chat show which, like it or not, he had made his own. Anyone else starting to think he was actually underpaid?!

I find it astonishing that after an existential crisis over inflated salaries, RTE’s first decision in that regard is to pay 150k to a no-name, knock-off satirist, who will probably be able to bump that up to 200k come the next contract negotiation. What must people like Claire Byrne, Bryan Dobson, Mary Wilson, etc, be thinking, all of whom are seasoned presenters earning between 190 and 250k? Kielty is only on 250k ffs.

This was a real opportunity for them to make a point and pay him 75k, on top of his TV work, but just can’t help making a hames of things.

Will RTE reduce the number of Researchers for the show? It was said Tubs had a team of 7 to produce his content. A reduction down to a Producer and two Researchers would save ~150K per year.

BTW. On the Tubs tread it was posted that Virgin Radio UK are currently looking recruit more staff for his show.

Yeah one would need imaginative people to research the plots of books he pretends to read and the antics of seagulls and the unreality of puffins.

I hope NK workers are paid well for all their weekend and night work. Must be demoralising to have a job trawling through SM

Oliver is a radio aficionado, takes a very keen interest in it. Hopefully he will keep it that little bit edgy.

Rte spending another 150k, or 300k over 2yrs, they haven't got.

Good choice. Callan is definitely the best of the crew who tried out. 150K doesn't sound unreasonable to me for a flagship show like that.

    Up Monaghan!

Congrats Oliver, definitely the best of the fill-ins

A flagship show should be more than an hour. The only reason it’s an hour is because it was a “placeholder” for the Late Late host.

Think it's a bit of a stretch to describe it as a flag ship show really .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,340 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Morning Ireland is a flagship show. Drive time the same. You could make an argument for Claire Byrne show too.

But a light radio 1 hour show that doesn't fit in with the overall schedule on the station can't be considered a flagship...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,331 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

I would disagree with you that Drivetime in its current embodiment is even close to a 'Flagship Show'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Well you can always rely on setting your clock by the 'chuckle slot'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭pureza

€576 an hour isnt unreasonable? Its an immoral rate for feck all work and the show is not flagship anything

A Better use of funds would be to bring back a Dear Frankie show for that hour

Well, if it's not a "flagship" show, RTE News just described it as "coveted" ... 🙂

I am assuming Callans Kicks and all the other stuff is included at $150 K.

It is a lot of money for very little work.
