Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I guess the show needs it's own thread. The plan is that Oliver Callen, Brendan Courtney and couple of other tba hosts will do it will into the winter. It very much looks like the vacancy is left open for Tubs to return.

Of course, RTÉ has emphasised that Tubridy's absence is for the foreseeable future.

That’s ridiculous in fairness. He’s a contractor. You don’t find most private companies moving Pele arid a position just to Keri it open just so a golden boy contractor can come back.

is doing a good job but her voice kind of grates on me a bit.

I caught the last few minutes of Maura Derrane in the chair this morning.

A rushed interview with a paralympian that was cut even shorter for an ad break.

She wouldn't be on my shortlist.

Surely if RTE is to become a more streamlined slimmed down broadcaster, The 9am hour show must go? You wouldn't find such a short program on Newatalk or TodayFM, Just put CB on 9 till Midday, or 9 till 11:30 with Louise 11:30 to 1, or with how grossly over staffed morning Ireland is extend it to 10am and do something new/creative with the extra hour

Found it fairly dull this morning...now I had mostly avoided this show when Courtney was in, but I do enjoy tuning in for Oliver's first 25 mins or that, so I said I'd check out Maura, but it was heavy going. Now she did mention that she does have trouble sleeping, which is fair enough....but why accept a show that requires you to be relatively sharp and bright early enough in the day then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Maura seems to have got her foot in the door just before the recruitment ban

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,265 ✭✭✭bobbyss

Heard her for the first five minutes this morning. She seems to doing this monologue thing also as RT and others did. It is just waffle and nonsense.

I wonder are presenters required to do this blabbing on for twenty or so? I like her as a presenter but she seemed unsure of herself and sounded much less confident than when she's on the telly. I think she just forget about the dumb monologues and just get on with the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,792 ✭✭✭squonk

Maybe the rotating presenter thing is just keeping the show warm until they revamp the schedule? Definitely if KB wants to cut costs then she if the shorter shows might need to go. To me this always seemed like a vanity slot for Tubbs as TLLS presenter always had a radio presence. Gay could carry an entire morning show easily. PK the same with his later morning political spot. Tubbs couldn’t but as it seemed to be the convention to have TLLS presenter in radio too it seemed like giving him an hour where he couldn’t do much harm was the way to go.

Seems like a holding position while on high dictate a way forward. It’s also possible that Callan and Courtney might not want to commit to a likely dead duck show for an unspecified period. I’m sure they have more to do.

Yesterday it was about that she's an insomniac but one of her staff gave her a wonderful cure....... a bit of exercise!!

This morning, gushing about some young fella called Mescale, she's 53..

Now Maura is the frontrunner for the position apparently? After 3 shows?

    https://extra.ie/2023/09/13/entertainment/celebrity/maura-derrane-ryan-tubridy-radio

She wouldn't be with NKM by any chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭head82

Missed the show this morning ('missed' is probably the wrong description.. 'deliberately avoided' would be more apt).

How many times did she say 'fabulous'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,464 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

rapturous response apparently, sounds like the tired same old same old to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

1st time listened to Maura from the off, and she is definitely a rambler.

Keeps repeating herself as if you have just joined in, by saying "I was just saying earlier how ......." but if you've been listening from the start, it's a little annoying.

Keeps saying "when I grew up on the island", and I keep picturing The Village from the M. Night Shyamalan film!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,364 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

She has grown in confidence as the week has gone on.

Definitely in the Tubridy babble mould.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,303 ✭✭✭Viscount Aggro

At least she can keep the dialogue straight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭RINO87

Tried a few more times this week, but she's just not for me, I find it pretty bad to be honest.

Callan far more suited to the Role IMO, which means he probably wont get it!

I never noticed Maura mention it, but is the show coming from Cork? Would have thought they would be down there this week rehearsing for the Today show. In fact does she live down there, or does she travel each day for the Today show? The mileage allowance would have been good there, and it's likely gone now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,836 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

She's taking a hiatus from the Today Show while she's doing this.

I wanted to give her a chance. But jesus RTE have missed a trick here.

While I wasn't a fan of tubs. This is complete and utter dross.

I'd rather the slot left open for college interns for a bit of experience than this rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,364 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

At the very least you have to sound engaged. Tubridy's fault was a simple one, he sounded false and over engaged, which grates intensely with me. So much so, I navigated elsewhere.

Maura seems to lack engagement and I switch off with her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭RINO87

Ya its pretty bad...gave it three goes now and its just not happening. As an aside I was in the supermarket there this morning and Maura was on the cover of 3 "glossy's" beside the till, so it seems the PR machine is already in motion.

Callan was excellent in this slot, in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Callan certainly the best of the 3 stand-ins.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

If they've any sense they'll give him the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,986 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

I don't know would Maura would be up working a five day week.

Originally with the Today show she did four days.

Monday - Thursday. The Friday Show is prerecorded on a Thursday evening.

Then Sinead started doing Monday's and Tuesday's.

Maura then was doing Wednesdays and Thursday.

She is covering Sinead's maternity leave now.(I think there stuck to get somebody to cover it).

When Sinead had the last baby they tried five or six people in the slot before giving it to Emer O'Neill.

    Maura is always on Magazines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,364 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

You'd wonder is he actually looking for the full time gig.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

That did cross my mind actually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Maura was chatting about the TV show Bad Sisters this morning, and said that she was told it was "brilliantly brilliant".

Outdoing Tubs with her strange use of words.

Heard her this morning. I's ok Maura. You don't HAVE TO do that monologue thingy. Just get on with the programme and talk to some guests. They maybe more interesting than your comings and goings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,364 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Sorry to say, Brendan Courtney is now receiving the same treatment in this house as Tubridy. RTE down one listener to this slot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yeah, very rarely listen now. The stand ins aren't much good.

Only Oliver Callan makes it listenable.

MD was very amateurish, and fed up hearing about Brendans dog and the fact that he loves dogs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 262 ✭✭tromtipp

Not very good this morning - maybe she'll find her stride, but far too many ums and ers and talking over her interviewee. RTE need to work out how to use that slot better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,364 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

  • Registered Users Posts: 262 ✭✭tromtipp

She has a very odd delivery style - takes a deep breath, starts talking with emphasis on the first word, keeps going till she runs out of puff, takes another deep breath, emphasises the first word, keeps going . . . . No reference to or respect for the meaning of what she's saying. It is almost impossible to listen to (is she reading words off a cue?) - stuck it out for over five minutes today because the cat was on my lap and I didn't want to disturb her, but eventually puss had to go.

Not good radio. Maura Derrane was irritating but also engaging in a perky under-researched way. This woman - not right for the medium.

Haven’t listened but while I see a point in having a few weeks off alternating presenters for singer coverage or where there is an issue finding a permanent placement, I don’t see the point in turning a a prime time morning slot on a national radio station as a work experience gig for various staffers.

Im assuming Maura, Ciara etc are all qualified in communications which is fine and I suppose we all gravitate to with areas within our qualified field that we feel best suit us. It’s great though to get out if the comfort zone after a while but, for a lot of us, it means doing out of when courses and using that to help out where needed in work, but you don’t throw someone interested in exploring other areas in their career path straight into the high profile project to let them learn in the cauldron. They’ll be crsp and it’s not their fault really. It’s disrespectful to the listeners to have to put up with this instead of a full time qualified host with relevant experience.

    Who is presenting now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭RINO87

Oliver has been in this week. I didn't catch him mentioning how long for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,519 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

Caught 5 minutes of Callan’s tiresome blather while queuing for my coffee this morning. Why does he talk out of his nose? The guy is a worse broadcaster than he is an impressionist (which is absolutely awful btw).

Right on doc. Good to have you back.

I remember if anything negative was said about the previous presenter Ryan, the 3amigos would be along to moan and report!!!

This man speaking about his Prostate cancer is excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,132 ✭✭✭Mena Mitty

Daithi on this morning flogging a hair transplant business. You could not make this up.

The bould Daithi got his very expensive procedure for free he told us. He was then appointed 'Brand Ambassador' he didn't say if he is paid for this post but did add he's on contract with RTE and he got the go ahead from the Skipper.

If he turns up on the LLS with this cure for baldness roadshow I'll have lost all faith in RTE and it's future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,289 ✭✭✭Tow

Did Daithi say anything about declaring the new head of hair to the Revenue?

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭rdser

Disgraceful giving Dairhi airtime to work as a brand ambassador for his plugs. Their explanation that they weren't promoting anything is waffle. It's clearly promoting the Bons Secours balding treatment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,132 ✭✭✭Mena Mitty

Didn't hear the words Tax or Revenue mentioned caller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,132 ✭✭✭Mena Mitty

Can I mention again he had his treatment carried out for free. He didn't pay a single euro...zilch.

Not yer ol' common practice of No foal No fee or in this case No hair No fee. No money changed hands for the treatment itself as he said this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,792 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Another example of the culture which seems to be ‘well baked in’ out in Montrose….get as much as you can for nothing.

A lot of the arrogance is still in evidence out there despite the issues recently highlighted.

Not much seems to be changing this poster would opine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,119 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

For sure, its ingrained in a lot of them I'd say, cos they are who they are.

Nothing summed it up more than the freebies list that was displayed on here of everything Tubs got sent , for free. It was HUGE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,792 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

This 'Brand Ambassador' crack seems to be taking hold especially out in Montrose.

Now I know its not new but one would wonder how many of the 'liggerati'class out in RTE are involved.

Is there BIK involved? What does it entail?Does it involve using the national airwaves to sublimely pimp the product?

    Who is at it?

Even the panel on the Sunday game were getting clothed by some firmest been reported.

Seems like a bit of a ditch that needs to be dug out and tidied up.

Poor Pat is being ridden ragged here it would appear.

I wonder what John Q Taxpayer would have to say about it.
