I know. It’s just impractical for him to do a Mon-Fri Rte Radio spot but that’s not the point I was making. RTE have, at least for now, broken the link between LLS and a national radio morning slot. Why not go all in and cancel the slot and get Claire to take up the slack. You’re not paying another presenter and but supporting another research and production team as well.

Where did they find this one talking about her fertility journey this morning? She sounds like a right pain in the hole. I feel sorry for her fella.

I didn't catch it. How bad can she be. This sort of guest would have been pretty regular back when Tubs ran the show.

Maybe it is just time to extend Claires show.

I have no idea who The 9 O'Clock show is aimed at. Other then people who forget to change the radio after Morning Ireland.

Sorry Shay, I do love your music show in the morning.

Tubbs would have been rock hard interviewing this woman. Total misery slot. Too old to naturally conceive, multiple IVF sessions not taking, some alcoholism, crying, therapy. She sounded like she just wanted a wide outlet for her misery. I’m not sure rrally why she was on. She was definitely the wrong guest for that show. It’s shears been a light enough period between morning Ireland and Claire. It Ray should have been an item for CB to cover I’d have thought.

Jesus, who thought it was a good idea having her on?

Who wants to listen to that?

    Was she on promoting?

Honestly I don’t know. I got so put off listening to the whole palaver. You know I actually think she was just on to talk about her experience. She might have had therapy but it doesn’t sound like she’s completely over the whole thing given the tears. She really shouldn’t have been on. I’m not even sure of the benefit for other women in a similar situation. Oh, yeah, she’s an actor or something like that so I suppose she got in that way. Still, you’d have hoped that the production crew would have sussed her out beforehand.

That show has been 9-10AM for a long long time now. It was 9-11 fur years but was shortened towards the ends of Gay Byrne's on air career in the late 90's, with the mid morning show starting earlier. It remained an hour from 2000 when both Duffy and Finuncane tried and failed to make it their own; ironically the slot only settled into its own when Tubbs first moved into the fame.....

    Not forgetting John Murray

Remember Gareth O'Callaghan used to present it too ? He had been on the production team for Gay around that time, 1996 I think.

Jesus, thats sounds pretty fupping weird. I might give it a listen back.

If you can't fill the hour and need to rely on misery porn. It is time to kill the show.

I might listen back myself as I was working at the time so wasn’t giving it full attention. It’s funny though. The interview started brightly eight. She was sitting or at least based in or around bondi beach and making a thing out of that. It struck me before it went any further that she was kind of over egging that fact. She seemed ‘off’ to me.

Only by default did Tubridy settle his arse into the chair. O'Rourke was doing a decent job 1000-1200 and Tubridy was a meaningless filler. Lost more listeners than gained I'd wager.

    Oliver has taken the job.

It's Oliver Callan, the permanent host at 9am. Just announced on BOC's show.

Opportunity missed to save some dosh and make Claire Byrne work for her pay!

Looks like Callan has the gig. Discussing it with Brendan now.

How much is Callan on? Is he a contractor? Any idea on the wedge he is trousering?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,409 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Poor Oliver, he'll have to handle 5 hours a week with frequent holidays no doubt and also doing a weekly satire thing. He'll be knackered.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,955 ✭✭✭thesandeman

It won't be anything like the last waste of space was getting anyway.

2 year contract, starts Monday week. Expects Callan’s kicks to continue as an independent production

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

That’s a shame. Callan Kicks is the radio equivalent of Mr Brown’s Boys. It was always shït but is now genuinely embarrassing for all concerned.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,629 ✭✭✭archfi

    150k a year, 2 year contract.

Could have saved that with extending Byrne's show 9-12

Is that just for the radio show or also Callan’s Kicks?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,629 ✭✭✭archfi

AFAIK radio show only, I only caught him saying the amount and contract and that he'd have to be above 180k to be in the 'top ten'

Callan's Kicks is an independent production.

From what he said, €150k is just for the radio show. Callans Kicks deal not finalised as yet, sounds like it’s a separate matter

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,557 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Can’t argue with that. An hour in the morning is a waste of time. Either extend Claire Byrne’s slot or give Louise Duffy an extra hour.

Was hoping Shay Byrne would get it so I could listen to rising time more .Its a bit of a difficult slot to fill between the current affairs either side of it agree with others thinking that the two following shows could have been extended to fill the morning .

    150 k a year?

RTE up to their old tricks. Ridiculous.

  • Registered Users Posts: 873 ✭✭✭pureza

    It's outrageous

    A 5 hour week

    A show anyone could do

    That's 1000 licence fee's

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,352 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Lads. 150k for a 1 hour show a day. And according to Callan (or so says twitter), there was no negotiation, that's what rte offered and it's what he accepted.

    Bonkers stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,330 ✭✭✭McGrath5

Nice money if you can get it. Clearly far better terms than the low pay radio gigs on offer in the UK.

Callan is so undeserving. It shakes my faith in the fairness of life when people like him succeed!

Tubridy was on 450k for the radio programme and the Late Late Show. So if 150k is the value of 5 hours of radio, he was paid 300k to continue presenting the flagship TV chat show which, like it or not, he had made his own. Anyone else starting to think he was actually underpaid?!

I find it astonishing that after an existential crisis over inflated salaries, RTE’s first decision in that regard is to pay 150k to a no-name, knock-off satirist, who will probably be able to bump that up to 200k come the next contract negotiation. What must people like Claire Byrne, Bryan Dobson, Mary Wilson, etc, be thinking, all of whom are seasoned presenters earning between 190 and 250k? Kielty is only on 250k ffs.

This was a real opportunity for them to make a point and pay him 75k, on top of his TV work, but just can’t help making a hames of things.
