Expect winds to gradually increase again in Cork (county) around 0100-0300h but moderate rather than strong gusts in 50-80 km/hr range. Stronger winds heading more for Waterford-Wexford coasts. Parts of west Munster are basically in the eye of the circulation, west Kerry got into a convergence zone to west of that, and 34.1 mm rainfall at Valentia as result. That feature will gradually dissipate as the low transfers energy from western to eastern sub-centre in next 2-3 hours. As a result of all that, possible that some parts of north Cork, Clare, Limerick will stay in a relatively benign zone for much of the night before moderate southwest winds set in after 0300h.

I think the LP's tightest gradients have moved further East than earlier predicted keeping the strongest winds off and along the coast, hardly any orange level winds if any overland away from coastal areas and maybe scarce to get a gust in the Orange territory. ARPEGE giving a fair representation of the models now. GFS has backed off the earlier strong swathe of winds overland also. Will be windy and blustery in places overnight especially near coasts and high ground but not showing the earlier strong winds. In my opinion.

The ferry you're going on now is very rarely cancelled, and it copes very well even in severe weather. Best place to sit on Ulysses is in the area above the duty free shop, the seats recline a little, and they are not subject to the same movement as closer to the sides. Been on it several times in severe weather, and no hassles, one occasion, it was the only ship sailing for nearly 4 days due to weather, which was just as well, as we had to travel for our daughter's wedding in the UK, and we had a vehicle full of stuff that had to get there, and it did.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Was reading an article earlier in the week about the Youghal Iron-man this weekend. They got a 3 year contract to host this international event in 2019. That year there was a deluge on the day and they had to can the swim. Then covid hit in 2020 and 2021 so it was cancelled both years. It finally went ahead in full last year (i.e. at the 4th time of asking) and they were hoping to have a successful third installment this weekend. Think only the half iron man is on tomorrow, starting at 7am, (full iron man on Sunday) but still they are having brutal luck with this (Youghal is on Waterford border for those who don't know...).

Please excuse the weather ignorance… but can we just rid ourselves of this flopping El Niño and get back to something resembling normal 🙏 I’ve had enough of this Summer

Doesn't that first one show the storm doing a U turn over Ireland?

Active enough but never got going over here in the SW away from S Kerry, a few sferics again, still more precipitation to head this way overnight, maybe a storm in Tralee Bay later 😀

Yeah some powerful gusts now in Tramore , has taken down a lot of construction fencing by the racecourse and there was a tree down earlier also

More like pivoting I would think back into the parent low.

Something happened just outside Tramore earlier ambulance and 2 cars to the side. Then at Ballinamona roundabout on the ringroad looked like a tree down where the circus sets up

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,465 ✭✭✭SweetCaliber

Buoy 6200094 (is this the old M5?) now reports south winds 82 km/hr gusting to 111. Would say it's reaching exposed land in Wexford because Johnstown Castle is often reporting weaker wind speeds than most locations and it has gusts to 80 km/hr on 23z (00h) report.

Winds picking up again in South Wicklow after a lull for about an hour. Rain is back too although much lighter. Another few hours to go with this.

Could people posting maps from abroad say what time difference there is to Ireland please.

    Thanks for posting them.

Few different maps being posted but they all have timestamps somewhere in a corner.

Time mentioned "locale" = local time for the map

Time mentioned "CET / CEST" = Central European Summer Time / 1 hour ahead of us

Time mentioned "UTC" or "Z" = Universal Time, same as GMT. During summer this means 1 hour behind local time here (IST/BST)

Rain pelting down hard here in NW Donegal and we’re only on the mild side of Betty. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a home or business owner in Cork, worrying time and time again.

The wind has suddenly become very violent on the north county Dublin coast, and it still has an easterly component which always makes it worse in the coast.

The rain has finally stopped .
