Some very poor batting by the Australians you have to say. Real tail ender like efforts from most of them…

Bairstow let's Smith off the hook.

Jaysus that was a tight call. Reckon the ump got it right tho.

No need for that shot from Smith, story of his series.

Brutal from Smith. Some of the Australian shot selection has been baffling.

    Murphy doing well

Australia in the lead. Didn't look likely at one stage but they've put on some very useful lower order runs.

An Aussie lead was extremely improbable... they were something like 185/7 ... English bowlers could not mop that tail up....

I hope Labuschagne took a long look at the batting of Cummins and Murphy and was embarrassed, his approach to his innings was terrible.

Essentially it's a one innings match, England will look to score quickly and get a decent lead. Australia based on today will need twice the length of time to get England's total!

Third innings are always tricky. It’s why Stokes likes to bowl first, he uses it against teams and they often choke. Chasing suits England better so how will they go about setting a target. And the needs of the bowlers will have to come into it too. 350 in 70 overs won’t do them much good. I think it might work into Australia’s hands being a one innings game and batting last.

It wasn't Labuschagne's role to try and hit the bowling out of the ground. I'm quite sure he could have had a lash, knocked off 20-30 runs in quick time and then fallen to a rash shot just as quickly. Instead he occupied the crease, absorbed the tricky conditions and allowed the Eng bowling to tire a bit. He was unlucky to an extent too and could just have easily been spilled or gone for 4. You could more justifiably criticise Head or Marsh. Even Smith gave away his wicket a bit needlessly.

If the Aussies can take their chances that will inevitably come tomorrow morning, they're favs.

I'm not suggesting it was his role to hit the bowling out of the ground, but it was his role to contribute more than 9 runs from 82 balls a run every 9 balls or so! His pace was glacial. He batted as if trying to save a test match on Day 5. I did criticise Smith, he played a stupid shot and gave away his wicket as Australis were approaching parity. Head, Carey and March all got out carelessly.

Fair to say the test is evenly placed at the halfway mark. Seems the series could well come down to the final innings for each time.

Plenty of time for a result, will be an interesting days play tomorrow.

Tomorrow will indeed be interesting. Will have suited England that they didn’t have to kick off their second innings before close this evening. Openers can be rested heading out to the middle tomorrow, should get a full days play in. Might need the forecast to improve Sunday & Monday to get a result though, quite a lot of rain forecast both days. Hopefully the forecast improves so it can be decided on the field. It really is perfectly poised.

Can see Stokes hoping to bat most of the day, put Aussies in with an hour to go say and then hoping for a few weather breaks in next couple of days.

To do that, they'll have to balance aggressive batting with a bit of caution. Otherwise could offer an easy win.

England hitting at 7.5 runs an over to start. Even more aggressive that the first inning.

Australia are all over the shop. England rack up a big total and the Aussies will have to revert from their ultra cautious approach. Be interesting to see if there is a swansong innings for a few of them

England batting well here, 8 an over almost. Puts Australia's exploits into perspective. Aussies could be facing a big chase in the 4th innings though the weather for Day 5 isn't great so that will come into the reckoning too.

Lyon is such a huge loss for the Aussies. The lad played 100 tests in a row, took wickets and could hold up an end. He had started the series in fine form too. Murphy is a young fella and has plenty of promise but Lyon's absence has taken out a key piece of their bowling attack. They've looked a bit befuddled at times without him.

Australian bowlers are getting battered around the place here.

Australia needed that wicket but need 2/3 quick ones. They will be chasing 300 plus at this rate

Bit of pressure on the middle order here. I like that bit of captaincy from Stokes, changing the batting order….

With 8 wickets remaining youd have to think a lead of 350 minimum will be likely

Aussies not really making any impression here. They've very little chance of winning this match without something dramatic happening.

Could be even 400 lead at this rate. Right now it's England's to lose.

Forecast really looks like still being questionable as to a result being attainable…

should get a full session tomorrow morning but not much play after lunch. Monday has improved slightly but with showers on and off the number of overs we’ll see….between covers on/off and the cleanup etc…be limited.

Wonder if the English will put the boot down now after tea. Probably should, a draw is pointless….

Runs are coming so freely. Fifty partnership in 10 overs. Really highlighting what a mess Australia made of yesterday?

About 25 minutes since tea ended and a glove change and a drink on the field now, umpires, sort it out !

Good batting performance by Eng.. has anyone gone and rearranged the stumps mid over yet?? Maybe the umpires took a dim view and gave a warning. But Broad was it, should be fined for that I reckon :)

Not a chance Australia chase this sort of lead down. They've been completely outplayed in this 3rd inning.
