Labuschagne and Marsh playing OK, can't imagine the rain will be away too long, critical these two stay together and Australia carry as many wickets into tomorrow as possible. It seems there will be play tomorrow but into the afternoon.

How many times has Stokes stopped his bower mid over to change the field after having a two minute conversation with him…? Time is not your friend… think on the fly, act fast and get on with it.

I have watched about 90% of this day and only from what I saw only the one genuine chance that popped up into the air… but between fielders. Not brilliant from England, the Australian two have looked extremely comfortable.

Anderson getting a warning for running across the wicket - pretty cynical.

Fantastic ton by Labuschagne, fair dues.

They've settled in well and starting to knock it around. Labuschagne with an excellent century.

    Ah well.

Huge deflection, massive, how did the umpire not see that… ? 😟

just when the win started drifting away from England …. Get another quick wicket and it could be doable.

Brook puts a difficult chance down, but a chance it was, certainly.

Labuschagne will be kicking himself. He had played so well and gets out to Joe Root!!

Australia need to hang on here and get through to close whenever that is. Given how wrong the forecast was for this afternoon there could be far more play tomorrow than anticipated.

Yep, after playing so well - didn't really need to be hitting it either. Though with his eye in, trying to take whatever runs on offer.

Rain now. Be surprised if they get back out this evening

True, that innings should stand to him heading to the Oval.

I'd say that's it for the day, judging by the weather. England still massive favourites, but Australia showed some character after a chastening day yesterday.

Something that baffles me about Cricket:

Bee obvious since Wed, that bad weather was expected over the weekend. Why dont they allow extra time over Days 1-3 to allow for this, and if the bad weather doesnt come (unlikely), finish early on Day 5?

Also slow over rates, supposed to be 15 pr hour, 90 per day........if the rates are too slow then 10 instead of 11 fielders for bowling side, or if the likes of Warner is taking off his gloves after every ball to waste time, then a 100 run penalty to batting side.

There should have easily been another 10 plus overs bowled over the 3 days

Sometimes they do start a bit earlier or play a bit later. But a full days play is quite long as it is, throw in an energy sapping day and it's tough on all the players, partic those bowling & fielding. Cricket is a funny game, spells of relative inaction mixed in with periods when things happen very, very quickly. Requires a lot of concentration at that level.

I think it was last summer they started earlier, but it was the days after the weather. If you know the weather is coming, an extra 30-45 mins * 3 days isnt much to ask, in the interests of getting a result, is it....and if the weather doesnt come Day 5 is shortened

Too much chat and field changes, ball by ball at times....its too much. The game can be sped up a bit. A team shouldnt have to bowl 30 overs of spin to make the rate, but if its 15 per hour, and 24/25 are bowled in a 2 hr session, then the rate is wrong or teams are slow playing too much....and its not just bowling teams.......batters walking down the pitch between balls is nonsense too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Bowl two overs from one end before switching (let the batters switch)

One field change per over max

    Free hit for no ball

Sort out sight screens before the game so that there is not constant interruptions

Run penalty for every over not bowled in a Session

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Slow over rates :

100 run penalty would be overly harsh. Extra time ? Difficult…. Lots of other people impacted by that.

Bowling side : absolutely agree about the fielders, tell them to lose one.

Batting side : a warning for slow play / delaying… 20 run penalty first warning, 30 run penalty second warning and so on….

no team representative is allowed onto the field of play during play accept a physio or doctor.

no unofficial drinks breaks. no glove changes… this extra glove change is tactical, gloves… drink… break… tactics update etc..

    play - drinks - play - lunch - play - drinks - play - tea - play - drinks - stumps

    it’s ridiculous at this stage..

the game is so stop start.

Forecast at 02.00 is still for heavy rain all day in that area of Manchester. No winds, a real still day so no opportunity for it to blow through.

a real damp squib of an ending. The weather gods quite frankly can bite the butt end of my….. ******* !

The game, the series so finely poised. Everyone deserved to see the series decided by the players on the field… not the weather to such a degree.

Maybe things will improve overnight but it looks right now like Cummins and co. retain the ashes..not a bad way to end his captaincy by lifting the Ashes…

Can Stokes take some flack for allowing his side to bat through scoring 592 runs ? Backing an average bowling attack to bowl out the Aussies fast ? Was the then forecast maybe influential enough to say…. “ ok probable playing time is not on our side, better to risk and fail then not give ourselves a chance “… hard to know….

I think given that the Aussies will almost certainly chase down the England lead and make them bat again (if weather allows) then Stokes can't really be blamed for not declaring earlier. In hindsight at least, he wasn't wrong.

These are all terrible lol. I personally don't want Test cricket tinkered with too much even if over rates are terrible. The game moves a lot faster these days and if it wasn't for losing the best part of two days to putrid weather, this game would be done. They need to start pushing lunch and tea until a certain amount of overs are bowled and then the same in the evening until the light goes. Maybe that messes up things up too much for broadcasters etc so I guess it's not an option. I dunno why at least they can't keep playing in the evening for a extended session if the light is fine.

But surely delaying tactics are part & parcel of the test game and have been around a long time. It's suits the Aussies in the present match situation to slow things down a bit and limit their exposure. But you can be as sure as hell is hot, that Eng would be doing just the same is positions were reversed. You play with what you're presented with.

Then there's the issue of player safety which has come more to the fore. Wood et al decide to bowl bouncers and hit a helmet, there has to be a concussion and helmet check. Whereas previously it would be pick yourself up and carry on.

Seems there could be play soon, I think rain will be around most of the day but they should be able to squeeze some play in. England deserve to win this match as they have been the better side, yesterday aside. However, it's gas listening to TMS and the gang checking their weather apps etc praying for play, you can be damn sure it would be the opposite if roles were reversed.

England are strong favourite but if Australia were to force the draw while batting (but obviously benefiting from the lost play) it might give them a confidence boost but that's a long shot.

Lots of questions ahead of the Oval too if it's 2-2 - Warner - do they go again? Green drop for Murphy? Do the quicks have another test in them?

Woakes has been off the field a fair bit -is he carrying an injury? Wood while still very good, hasn't been as effective in this match as the last, does he have another match in him in three days, Broad will be playing his 5th test - big ask for him, and Anderson clearly is moving inexorably towards retirement, 4 wickets in three matches in English conditions - been a long time since he was that ineffective - maybe he'll get a few today.

If a player is hit in the head yes, obviously it’s important to get it looked at but every niggle now where it seems the doctor, physio, 12th man and whoever else makes an appearance… players getting hit in the head is rare so it’s not going to impact.

tactics and piss taking are two different things. Too often play is being held up for silly reasons.

covers coming off but still a pretty grey sky. Hope Stokes has the nouse to go all out attack..

Radar says rain to linger most of day with some heavy rain incoming.

Wonder if allowing Bairstow chase his ton was necessary. An extra 10 over bowled on Friday could have led to an extra wicket or two taken. Then yday they might have been bowling at the tail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

Whatever, but something needs to change. Limit batter glove changes etc.

But slow over rates are a joke. Make some change. Playing endlessly all day is tough on umpires for example who have to stand out there all day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭VillaMad

On the flip side Australia would have got into a lead and England would have had to chase that down, so it's all the same really. The pitch has been a good one and wickets haven't come easy so there were no guarantees of anything for England.

Looks like the rain will be down for the day. Shame, as it has been a fairly dominant performance from England and it deserved to be 2-2 going to the Oval and you always want to see a match play itself out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah it’s absolutely chucking it down again. 2.10 pm now… it’s done Australia have the Ashes… the intensity of the rain you are talking a two and a half hour cleanup / setup at ‘best’… outfield will be waterlogged again….sorry IS waterlogged actually…just saw a pic…

Bad leadership here cost England the Ashes….

Should have forgotten about Bairstow’s ton….should have forgotten about posting a score of 8 runs shy of 600 ffs…..needed to be aware of the forecast.

But old matey Ben Stokes as captain… ? Piss poor…. A mega misjudgement for the ages… bad captaincy has cost his side the ashes…

I’ve said it before , in sport, the captain / management only need be loyal to one thing… the result and winning…. The captaincy… hmmm

Joe Root was way too conservative, now Stokes Billy big bôllocks thinks he can defy weather and let his mates score tonnes… what’s McCullums role here…. . ?

The errors weren't made in this test. The errors were made by losing the first two tests to what clearly is an poor performing Aussie team.

Too many no balls and dropped catches. The declaration in the 1st innings for very unlikely return.

A lot will be made of England being unlucky because of the weather, and there is a point to that, but their poor play put them into a position where they needed to win all three tests.

The Aussies look like they will retain the ashes. So job done. How it was done will be forgotten but the records will show England failed to win at home.
