No. I think Bass makes a good suggestion. It could be that before the scoring kick both feet must be on the ground outside the zone. It would allow teams 'out of the game' to go for Hail Marys. It would bring the defenders further from goal reducing congestion inside.

Would be much easier to change to 13 a side than start limiting the number of players in a half. Refs have too much to be doing already without trying to count players in a half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,343 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

They are never going to reduce to 13 a side. Not in the next ten years anyway. The solution has to be found within the parameters of 15 players on the pitch

Amazing how a snapshot in time can be so correct at the time but ultimapgtely so incorrect.

On June 8th the time of the quoted post Galway footballers had beaten Roscommon, Tyrone, Sligo and Westmeath and were in pole position to win the group and be straight into a quarter final.

But just over two weeks later they were out of the competition, their limitations laid bare by firstly Armagh and then Mayo.

And the hurlers were waiting to compete in a Leinster final, but lost it at the death and ended up having face Limerick in a SF.

So both out a month after the post.

It's the same with POTY predictions. A guy could be lights out until the quarter finals and plenty would be saying they are nailed on for the award, but and then disappears.

Was the minor final just won by Derry a minute ago in Armagh the first All Ireland final to be played north of the border since the 1983 u21 final replay?

Very quiet on the football forum. Very low key build-up to the semis. I'm not expecting a classic on either day, but will be a bit intriguing to see if either of Derry or Monaghan can come up with anything clever to try to thwart the big 2.

I would normally be up for the underdogs, but in this case, I think I would like Dublin and Kerry to contest in the final. But probably realistically if Derry or Monaghan are still in the game with 15 mins to go on Saturday and Sunday, I'll be probably end up roaring them on.

if there is any chance of an upset this weekend, I can see it in the Kerry-Derry game, and hopefully this is the case. Derry are a horrible team to play against, but their tactics could make for an intriguing game

if Dublin show up, I can see them beating Monaghan by 10 points or so. There are a lot of complaints from Monaghan people that they’re being subject to condescending comments and pats on the head for getting this far, but they’re a limited enough team, and I can see this being a step too far

I wouldn't even consider Derry winning to be a shock, in the sense of nobody seen it coming. They aren't favourites of course, but they are well capable and if they get their tactics and approach right then I think they will beat a Kerry team that as usual gets far too much credit.

Then Dublin will beat them in the final and Dubs will wreck their heads trying to figure out how Dessie Farrell won two All-Irelands.

A lot of Dubs was trying to over play the Dessie Farrell factor. He has a stocked management team to help him along including Pat Gilroy whom returned.

Better strength in depth than last year for the All Ireland semi final (only lost by 1 point to Kerry) with Con Callaghan, Paul Mannion, Jack McCaffrey and Cluxton back.

Their fitness and conditioning was highlighted against Mayo or be it that was Mayo's 3rd match in 14 days. Monaghans best hope is keeping the game as low scoring as possible. Scoring averages above doesn't bode well for them.

Have a feeling kerry v Derry could well turn into a semi final like we had in 2011 between Dublin and Donegal the pundits and journalists will have a field day if that happens.

I feel most neutrals want the Dublin Kerry final, it would be a great football contest and would save what so far has been a damp squib of a championship. Its unusual that the underdogs don't have the backing of the neutral but Derry are a horrible team to watch and play the worst brand of anti football that has ever been produced by a county team and I for one hope they are soundly beaten and I have no love for Kerry. Monaghan seem to have stumbled into this stage of the championship and I think Dublin will swat them aside with little fuss. I'm actually more enthused by the Tailteann Cup final than any of these semi's. Be interesting to see how Meath have refined their tactics over the course of the competition and how they cope against an ultra coached Down team.

Stocked management team? Dessie has same backroom team as other years bar Pat Gilroy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,867 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I could invent stuff about the neutrals as well, even though I have no way of knowing what they think. The underdogs will have the support of the vast majority of neutrals, who want to see new counties coming through. The other seven counties in Ulster will be fully behind Derry and Monaghan. And Meath and Cork people will want to see Dublin and Kerry getting beaten.

Monaghan will keep it compact, will look to be still in it Entering the last quarter, but ultimately the Dublin bench will probably push them on late on, a depth that Monaghan don't have. Monaghan are capable of getting 12 or 13 points, which probably won't be enough. If Dublin hit the net early on it'll be curtains.

Derry might pose Kerry bigger issues. IF, and it's a bit if, they can hold Clifford to what a normal human can do that do have a chance here. Kerry went well at Centerfield last time, but one swallow does not a Summer make, and Glass and Rogers can get on top there, and if Derry manage to hold possession then who knows? Strange things happen in these big games, something like a sending off (Paudie I'm looking at you) or somebody doing something dumb can have a big impact.

Sean O Se needs to step up and take some weight off Clifford's shoulders I feel.

As with Monaghan, I'm more interested in seeing how Derry can change possession I to scores. They are innovative in how they flood players forward at pace, and it can throw off a lot of teams defensive structures, so let's see how Kerry cope.

Unfair calling it anti-football though, it's important tbatteams play their own strengths and style and not listen to the dinosaurs and cynics.

Dessie got the greatest team of all time relegated and the way they were playing at times was headless and flat.

Still one of the best teams but that doesn't mean he is not a liability.

As a neutral if Kerry are in the final I want it to be against Dublin. Derry vs Monaghan would be amazing but either team vs Kerry I would be worried will be an underwhelming outcome for the romantics.

Dublin vs anyone is grand because you always have the fun of the whole country shouting against the Dubs 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭HBC08

As much as the majority of the country dislike Dublin and some kerry it's the best outcome from the current 4 teams for a final.Ill still shout for Monaghan though as they are a gutsy team with great heart and some great warhorses with a tiny pick, true underdogs.

I don't see how anybody outside of Derry could possibly shout for them and what they're peddling as football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 658 ✭✭✭Treble double

You don't need to be a brain surgeon to know which final pairing the neutral fan would part with cash to go and see. If Derry do shock Kerry it would be a hammer blow for football to see them, as they do in every game they play, reduce the crowd to bored silence on All Ireland final day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,320 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Derry are scoring just about enough to be a real challenger at this stage, 1-17.

Kerry have a much bigger scoring average but there are at least two turkey shoots in Tipp and Clare in that.

Interestingly Kerry are conceding less than Derry 13 to 1-12 on average.

Let’s just hope we have good enjoyable games of football, not just a pulling and dragging and falling borefest.

And that’s apart from from 40 or 50 handpasses to gain 10 yards in their own half.

Watch out for the number of steps taken……note to the referee.

The stats posted up thread would suggest thats all in some peoples heads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,867 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Do the neturals really want to see Dublin or Kerry adding to their combined 68 titles, which is more than all the other counties together? Or would they not rather the two other counties who have one between them getting the title?

As for steps, Dublin and Kerry players get away with it more than anyone else. (I just made that up). Every game that I saw on TV has numerous occasions where the steps rule is broken. It probably takes less than a second to run 5 steps. But woe betide any referee that starts blowing up for 5 steps.

I would love to see the Derry keeper caught out and Clifford to lob in a goal when he ventures up the field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 658 ✭✭✭Treble double

I would love to see different counties winning the big prize. However for the sake of the game I want to see Kerry and Dublin contesting this years final. Both are one of a handful of counties who still kick the football. Winning teams at county level are aped by every club team in the land and I want club teams to see that kicking the football is an important part of trying to win games.

If Derry do win the All Ireland imagine the knock on effect to the club game. Clubs trying to get 2 or 3 points ahead and then attempting to shut down the contest with mass defending and keep ball at walking pace in their own half. I see a club in my own county with a lot of young talent adopting this approach and it is depressing to watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,867 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I remarked on the thread during the Dublin Mayo game how Dublin had all 15 in their own half at times. I will be watching out for Kerry doing that on Sunday. They are no different than any other teams, defend in numbers and attack in numbers. And I don't recognise them has being one of a handful of counties who still kick the ball. Nice soundbite, but makes no sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,908 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

Both Dublin and Kerry use kickpassing in the transition from defence to attack much more than other counties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,005 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I'm really starting to want Derry to win this All Ireland.

Most Boardsie's tend to use fromoutoftheirar.se

Some people seem to think it's a very accurate site but I think it's a bit of a hole.
