Was thinking that too, the fake almost looks better. If these pics were put in front of me without text I'd probably pick the wrong one as the genuine one.

It's mad isn't it? The grey prices, the waiting lists and the nonsense of relationship building for a stainless steel diver that, and without meaning to sound like a total wanker, is from the example in the photos. Being faked down to the component level and at a level that is easily confused with the real deal.

I'm not a Rolex owner, I probably will flip into one at some stage, but, that would be more for the shout of "I once owned a Rolex" I know some hold that they are are reasonably liquid store of value but, I'd rather have 2/3 good watches at the mo that 1 Rolex that I'd feet over.

And you? On a waitlist for a Rolex? 🤔 With your taste in Haute horology? It must be an Artisans Dé Geneva 😝

Honestly would have the same issue. The fakers are getting to the point (with Rolex at least) that they are becoming very, very hard to spot from the real thing.

Speaking of finishing, I noticed this on two watchfinder vids earlier. You would think Patek would finish the under side of the second hand but obviously not , GS snowflake clearly does .

Patek and Rolex are trash. Seiko FTW!

Trip to specsavers needed for you if you really think that Patek second hand is finished better than the grand seiko.

Oh no, I agree. The Seiko finishing is second to none.

Not that I have an opinion one way or the other but this has my curiosity going now.

How does one judge the under-side finishing of the second hand from those pics?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 485 ✭✭Ian OB

From the reflection on the hand underneath I presume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,981 ✭✭✭scwazrh

Look at the reflection of the underside of the second hand on the minute hand .

The Pateks is unpainted and rough with marks on it. The GS is finished the same as the top side of the hand.

Thanks, and yes there seems to be something on the Patek pic but I can't see a reflection on that Seiko pic.

I have a near mint condition seamaster for sale if you’re interested. It’s black, ceramic bezel on rubber strap.

I suspect it almost suits Rolex that they can be close faked.

The lads that would wear the fakes will never spend 10k anyway so no business lost. And the lads that will are so terrified of being caught that it drives them to AD and reputable dealers. Win win.

Yeah Rolex incoming all going to plan. Image below. guaranteed delivery in 9 months (subject to natural causes) and only cost me 50 quid

Fair play, not many that would be so ostentatious as to have their new Rolex delivered via limousin 😝

So no matter what type of Rolex you buy , there’s unsatisfactory riding involved

Grand seiko polish the **** out of everything and make everything mirror shiny, don't mistake polishing for finishing. You can polish to a mirror with electrochemical processes where no hand has to touch it. I know there is the "zeratsu" (there typed it drink a shot) polishing, but it doesn't impress me. True finishing is art, engraving and the design and the way the different finished flow into eachother, and its that the GS lacks. ( Anyone with a gs will know they are fun to sh1te on about for a day or two, then you realise they don't get the juices flowing, and how long you keep it is a function of your level of stubbornness). They are technically good but lack beauty. Patek don't finish the underside of hand and that on sports models (which are their entry level watches, but at the price they really should) but they do on their complications and grand complications which are the watches they are actually proud of. Only Lange have a universal perfect finish across the line. I have louped all of the holy trinity and others and Lange are leagues above in finish. Patek lead in the design aspect, AP however have the best designs and a good standard of finish combo. JLC have a generally perfect finish, but they lack some finesse. VC are similar to ap in finish but their designs are less iconic.

Rolex is not even in the game, and they dont position themselves there. They are entry level luxury and they look like it. However the desirability of a watch and its level of finishing or movement technicalities are mostly not linked. Rolex dont even display their movements....seiko display the movements on their seiko 5 for god sake which is an assault on the eyes for any right minded person. I appreciate more that a watch knows what it is and is designed to that function without tarting it up. A dress watch should be highly ornate and a tool watch should not.

Because it's all subjective. If everyone liked the same thing it would be pretty boring and accept that not everyone likes the same things you do.

Someone should tell the lad trying to sell a 16 year old sub for 16k on adverts, it's not his first rodeo apparently 🤣

Stop trying to pick a fight please, if you agree everyone can like different things then what is amazing to you about my opinion?. Try calling out everyone that slags off a Rolex, its a full time job. If you like GS tell us why, and include thing other than the polishing. I am genuinely interested in other peoples opinions, just not their opinion on my character or motivations.

Of course people dont like the same things as me, good taste is a rare and wonderful gift enjoyed by the fortunate few.😚

Writing has been on the wall for ages, defo would not want to be left holding stock.

Is annoy the right word ? Saying a GS is better finished or better in any way than the holy trinity or Rolex certainly does get a debate going but if any of us middle aged men here get annoyed over watches we should really have a close look at how we spend our time.

I respect your handling experience with pretty much all brands but I do think you don’t give enough credit to GS. You’ve stated plenty of times that they’ve no soul and to be fair I feel the same when it’s on the wrist .The lack of rotor sound from the spring drive is unusual and not something I like but it does kind of suit the snowflake.

They are a quality watch though and to label their finishing as nothing more than fancy electro plating is incorrect. They are a very well finished watch above their price point. Are they holy trinity level , of course not ,but is a snowflake one of the best finished watches in the €6k price point? - For me yes

That said there’s no getting away from the fact that based on the two images I posted earlier , the GS second hand is finished better than the Patek .Obviously I’m under no illusions and know that the Patek is a far better watch but I was surprised when I seen that the second hand was not only unpainted but is roughly finished . I don’t think that’s good enough for a holy trinity watch regardless of it being their entry level or not .

When I get time I need to spend a few hours trying to get some macros of my collection. This been on for the last week. Always a favourite in my rotation.

This particular PP isn't my cup of tea, but I absolutely love the fact that there are obvious signs of wear on it.

    Fair play.

The first time I chipped the crystal on my Speedmaster, I nearly had a coronary. But the joy of wearing it overcomes the fear of damaging it.

Not in the same league as the PP, but some empathy at least.

I'm terrified of macros. Much happier not knowing what is going on up close.
