O’Sullivan hammered 5-0 by Tian who was immense, hardly looked like missing.

Ronnie sat in his seat and anytime the camera pans on him he’s constantly fidgeting with or adjusting his tip. Given he spent the vast majority of the match sitting down, he’ll have that tip worn away…Guy gets on my wick… can only imagine it’s got to be the same for his opponents…a distraction.

On studio punditry duty…a while ago. Is asked a straightforward question by Rachel, he refuses to answer and instead defers to Neil Foulds…. Petulant on and off the table…..The look of.. “ hey I’m just sitting here because you pay me, couldn’t care less “. Makes no attempt to join the conversation or use his experience and expertise to further the discussion….looks like a tailor shops dummy sitting there.

if you were a TV producer you’d rather just a mid ranked old timer who is capable and interested enough to talk the game.

That was some snooker escape by Murphy in frame 1. In and out of the knuckles and down the table to pot the red hanging over the middle.

    https://twitter.com/eurosport/status/1627031193106677760?t=DaFEAbPcmkTU5VhcIau9rw&s=19

As good as the escape he had using loads of check side at the Crucible a few years back. Probably even better.

Yea Murphy has played made a lot great shots in this match despite the fact he seems a bit nervy.

Good final Milkens leading 4-3. Enjoying the BBC Wales coverage with John Virgo on commentary and Ken in the studio

The £150K bonus question? I presume he passed on the question as his answer (likely critical of the sponsors BetVictor) would have been a disrepute charge.

perhaps there lies the conflict of interest ? Little point of someone volunteering to do media work and feeling they are required to swerve straight and fair questions / conversations…. I’m sure diplomacy can prevail in situations… where he would not need to be critical.

Similar to Sky Soccer I guess when they have a current manager or player in the studio. They don't throw the 'are the refereeing standards plummeting?' type of question at them as they can't answer.

I agree it does raise the question of what Ronnie actually brings to the studio expert role. Not a lot really compared to Foulds and the other ex-players.

Murphy really needs to up his game if he's wants to lift the trophy. His temperament seems quite poor today indicated by all that grimacing he's at.

Btw, like the BBC host Ian Dunt, pity he doesn't host some of the bigger events.

Had a long reply written out, click on another page by mistake, go back and it's all gone. This site is awful, autosave draft feature disabled. Thanks.

This final is dire, absolutely dire. Murphy has been poor and too casual, probably thinks he doesn't need to do much to beat Milkins. Rob Milkins shouldn't be winning any tournament, yet he just needs 2 more frames after this evening's mid-session interval, 7-5. Highest break has been 70 I think from Murphy and 66 from Milkins.

7-6. But Milkins is on a break in the next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

    Couldn't begrudge Milkins from here.

It would be a huge win for him.

Dickie Davies has died aged 94. Presented the ITV snooker coverage throughout the 80s.

Terrific century break(the only one of the final) from Murphy in the last. Messes up in the next, and you just knew Milkins would botch his chance, which he duly has.

Delighted for the Milkman. Think he's had a few issues with drink over the past few years. Hopefully this changes his life for the better.

Good win for Joe O'Connor last night against Mark Allen, Mark was starting to come back but Joe held his nerve and took the match 6-3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Quite the achievement to be fair. Although the hole in 1 could've been with a wedge. But he does play off scratch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,107 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

I heard he once beat up Mike Tyson and also bowled a perfect game. But he doesn't like to blow his own trumpet (though if he did, it would be note perfect).

The greatest Snooker/Golfer/Darts Player is through to the next round beating Selby 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,477 ✭✭✭AllForIt

Yeah Murphy played great stuff this afternoon and really should have gone 4 - 0 up but for missing the clinching red in the forth which was a bad miss even with the rest. Wilted a bit at the end but got over the line eventually.

https://twitter.com/ITVSnooker/status/1628086183921168385?t=f0TgfV4bonWOj0Gp8SRlCw&s=19 - classless here from Murphy, as usual. On ITV twitter, may be geo-blocked outside of the UK though.

Classless as usual?? That’s a mad thing to say. He’s generally a decent skin.

And Carter goes through in the final frame decider Tense and Nervy final frame with mistakes from both players.

Any other link to that Murphy interview? That one on twitter won't work for me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭Spudman_20000

He's clarified his comments over on Instagram.

I'm no Murphy fan, but I kinda see what he's getting at.

Not a good day at the office (media wise at least)

He's let himself down there, truth be told. Jill always comes across as a nice woman and this looked terrible.

    Anyway, move on

No fan of Murphy but that wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,063 ✭✭✭Genghis

Looks like Shaun was trying to make a general point about journalists not really examining key moments in a game, but was totally unaware that it would appear to be directed at Jill alone.

Probably comes from commentators like Dennis Taylor or Ken who very often say something like lapse of concentration, a bit of adrenaline, nerves etc instead of calling out a bad shot, or examine why it's bad. Foulds or Hendry much better at criticising an error.

Definitely not a good look for Shaun but I do think he has a point even if should have made it less directly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Murphy is a gobshite but I’ve no problems with that interview. Interesting to hear an alternative explanation to the usual “lost his concentration”. It doesn’t come across like he’s responding directly to the interviewer, it’s understood he’s responding to pundits who repeat that same comment.

What I found funny was after spending two minutes explaining why misses occur, Ken asks “so Sean, what do you put it down to?” 🙄😆

Ken's a former world champion, he presumably knows what he's talking about. SM's right in the sense that there are a lot of reasons why a player can miss a shot - nerves, a misjudgement of angles or cue placement, or the characteristics of the table. But sometimes it probably is because they're thinking of the next shot or dwelling on cueball position at the expense of making the pot and that's "loss of concentration". Nobody can concentrate 100% all the time. Maybe it is lazy commentary but it's ridiculous to say it never happens. Anyway, it was an interesting discussion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,472 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

    Agreed.

I just think he was in a bad mood and went off into a rant, he seems to not be happy with not knowing the timing of his match. ITV might have had a part in the scheduling here and this might have been a factor.

Anyway, the game has bigger issues to deal with at the minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,107 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

if someone was feeling mischievous they could trawl Murphy's commentaries to find an example of him citing "loss of concentration" after a miss 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

Not really sure on the point he was making on technical reasons for errors

You can put most of it down to focus or concentration anyhow

I’ll never understand the hatred Murphy gets. Excellent player, decent fella on and off the table.

He really isn't a decent fella. Just look up his past history with other players ie the chalk incident with Maguire, cheating on his wife, claiming to be a Christian while being caught with prostitutes, his comments when the amateur beat him in the snooker while Murphy himself had played in a golf tournament as an amateur, his constant sniping at O'Sullivan, his utter inability to shut up in commentary. Murphy is a horrible person.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭waynescales1

Good contest between Carter and O’Connor here, 4-4 now. A real grind for both players, O’Connor did everything right but missed the pink for a respotted black!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

Someone made a clatter just as carter drew his arm back

    Never looks happy anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,027 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Hard luck Joe O'Connor. He played some great snooker tonight. But great comeback by Ali Carter.

Murphy vs Wilson in the other semi tomorrow night.

If it does end up a Carter Murphy final I think I'll be hoping for a Carter win.
