Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'll have a look into the sectors thing. I mean it's all possible.

I have found Liveatc very hard to work with, the guy is obviously slammed busy all the time.

My improved tower freq feed has been working over a week now but I just cannot get him to make it live on the site.

It's even on a test mount and working.

He says he will, but he doesn't. So progress is slow and a little torturous.

The main problem with the ground reception is the digital receivers, they are pretty deaf.

I can't even rf amp them as they are virtual receivers and bleed over badly.

To be honest the whole thing needs an overhaul but my experience so far is not promising.

Anyway I have some antenna improvements in the pipeline so hopefully that will improve things.

Rant over, It's frustrating me a bit, I kinda had a plan. anyway onwards, slowly.😀

Think there something up with EIDW Del/Gnd/Twr/App/Center feed. Seems to be a different news feed or something coming through instead

  • Registered Users Posts: 20 Mickyjoek

Dublin City Fm coming through on the main feed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

    fixed there now lads.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Technology-wise, is there anything that we can help with?

For example, would this system benefit from a UPS, if it was funded?

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

I have the new Tower feed up.

The original is still there so there is Tower#1 link the original, and Tower#2 link the new one.

If anyone just goes in from favorites it might be worth going to the main site and trying it or if your on any aviation groups let them know.

I think I'm ok for the moment as Pat said before said the biggest failures are scanners which just don't like 24/7 operation.

I have a spare on here so should be ok for a while.

I think this, or similar, is happening again now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Sometimes it locks onto a strong signal nearby and it needs a manual reset.

I have a cure for this problem I'll hopefully get it installed shortly. Teething problems.

Service down, big area broadband fault.

    Hello,,, is there anyone there?

Main feed is commercial radio again.

Are you gonna tune a scanner channel to Bray airshow?

    Pat.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Apologies to everyone about that extended outage.

When I took this on I didn't realize we have micro power cuts every other night, this is due to a tripsaver fitted by the power company in the area.

The scanner for the multi feed defaults to an FM broadcast frequency when it gets interrupted, it takes a manual reset to get it scanning again.

I check it most mornings but if I am away well then that's it until I got back.

I have now fitted a new scanner with a battery back up and it should be unaffected by power cuts. I hope it works out okay and the signal is good.

The Bray airshow was not really on my radar (pun) however it easy for me to retune the tower no2 channel to any frequency to cover short term events, so if there any events you think would benefit from coverage in the Dublin area let me know and I can retune it, or add it to the multifeed.

    Hopefully this will improve things.

Feeds all down atm FYI @Bumpstop

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Yes,I have been talking to Dave of Liveatc throughout the day.

They are having problems with their servers, I think it resolved now.

However we thought it was fixed earlier too and they had issues again.

Fingers crossed, but they seem fine now.

The software receivers used for most of the feeds are cheap and resource light to use.

    They do unfortunately have limitations.

The ground North frequency was changed, and it was not possible to program a feed to the new freq.

So rather than have a dead feed it is now programmed to Dublin Centre.

Reception seems quite good. Thanks to Dave in Liveatc for all the help.

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 Staunton96

Hey @Bumpstop, feeds have been dead for a few days it seems. Also North Tower one in particular has been for a week or so - just FYI. Thank you!

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Yes, I swear every time I go away something happens.

I have been away for about 3 weeks, but there was a strong wind storm apparently, shortly after I left.

The antenna and pole came down, I don't think anything is damaged, but it's going to take me a few days to repair.

So apologies, I'll get it all back up as soon as possible, hopefully by mid week.

Happy to make a donation for beer money if that helps the cause!

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

With bad weather coming tomorrow, I got time this morning, to do the repairs.

The antenna is erected again, the feeds are working.

I still have to power cut proof, the North runway tower scanner, I have an easy solution in mind.

Hopefully that's it for a bit.

    Fingers crossed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Well it was going too well, 86 listeners on the site, antenna standing up to 56 MPH winds, lots of go arounds.

ESB pole broke and blacked out the area after lunch. nothing left to do except go to the pub.

    😀😁😂🤣

    Anyway back up now.😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 824 ✭✭✭LiamaDelta

Thanks for your efforts, much appreciated on a day like yesterday. I think it went over 100 listeners at one point before lunch

    Looking good!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭Mech1

But your wasting the last few inches of that mast pole, loosen the u bolts and push it up as far as you can. It will also help get the radials above the pole.

  • Registered Users Posts: 42 Staunton96

Hey @Bumpstop. Just seems like North Tower one never actually came back properly after this - signale extremely weak... Thank you

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Thanks for the heads up I hadn't noticed that.

We had a brown out here for a while, seems to have caused both scanners to have a melt down.

I am amazed the Raspberry Pi survived and software radios.

The TWR North scanner is working again, the pre amp might have taken some damage I'll keep an eye on the signal.

Haha gas. That's unreal - thanks so much for your quick response and work on it

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

No problem, I actually don't listen to the feeds that much, I usually check the Liveatc page for feed status.

I'm not convinced that the TWR NTH scanner is working properly but I'm just short of time at the minute to troubleshoot it.

I'll get a look at it shortly.

@Mech1 do you have your setup documented anywhere? I'm looking to do a similar setup in Kathmandu

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 824 ✭✭✭LiamaDelta

I think FR24 have set-up guidea on their website and they offer to help people with setups

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭Mech1

Sorry, but my setup was old style compared to now. I suggest that you contact Dave Pascoe at live atc. He will help you.

Worth tuning in if you can. EIDW currently closed due to drone over the the airfield.

Hey Bumpstop, the feed seems to be down this morning😞 Thanks for hosting as always, a great tool to have for all of us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Yes apologies to all. we have the builders in doing some work at the moment.

Despite being asked not to, they keep unplugging/ disturbing/drilling through the router and radio gear etc.

It's not their fault really, they are working close to the set up.

they are here for another month or so, it will be a little patchy during the works.

I will do my best to stay on top of it. Bear with me as they say.🙂

Hopefully my power and broadband stay working tomorrow, I don't think we will hit too bad here.

I am able to raise and lower the antenna a few feet easily, so I have it lowered into the storm position so to speak😀

It actually doesn't affect the performance too much, ground takes a bit of a hit.

If anything happens I'll try and keep all updated if I can.

I am making some changes over the weekend so the feeds will be down for a while at some point.

Nothing major, just moving the set up, and replacing the aging co ax cable while I am at it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 156 ✭✭DublinKev

Is there a reason why the reception on the EIDW Tower (North) is so poor on LiveATC.net? Compared to the south runway coverage it is very crackly and the quality makes it very difficult to make out what is being said at times.

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

    Hi, yes.

I don't know why, some days it's better than others.

I have tried to improve it, but it is just a low power signal. (Maybe a comms tech at the airport might know)

It's not on a software radio and has it's own dedicated scanner with a VHF RF amp and that's as good as I can get it.

Perhaps the tower comms is low power and directional on the runway headings but I don't know.

I have been looking into getting a directional hi gain vhf band yagi antenna for it, so that may help.

Considering the other tower is on an un amped SDR and it's fine, it's a bit frustrating.

  • Registered Users Posts: 156 ✭✭DublinKev

Thanks for the reply Bumpstop, and thanks for all your efforts, it’s a great facility to have. I’m sure, in the fullness of time, it will all be resolved.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 vsat1

I have a sneaking suspicion, tower north is TX'd from the north side of the field, at the TX site which is just inside the north perimeter road, whereas the "old" (south) tower frequency is from the TX's in the tower. A ramble around the field would confirm this. The north TX is lower elevation, so anything southwards trying to receive would have a worse signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭Mech1

Any more info or "thoughts" on the transmitted signals would should consider? Or any other airfield information?

    Thanks,

    Pat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 367 ✭✭vswr

as mentioned previously, your location is probably lower elevation to the presumed northside TX site compared to the tower south freq. This would tie in with the "good somedays, not so good somedays", as the groundwave signal strength will vary with ground/air conditions.

Looking at google maps, all antennas are folded dipoles (standard setup for civil airband). You only start going down the directional antenna route for bespoke coverage solutions (a tower frequency is not one of these situations).

    Solutions:

higher antenna is always better. Amplifiers are an option, but will also amplify any noise, this is a bit of an art to get these working without introducing unwanted noise. Directional antenna is an option, but, you take away possible coverage of aircraft if pointing at the TX site, maybe a low element, slightly directional yagi may be an option (3-4 element?)... won't be as much gain, but may improve the tower signal without sacrificing much coverage due to directivity (i.e. you still get the planes )

    Hi Bumpstop,

The Dublin GND/TWR/DEL/APP/CTR feed on live ATC seems to be playing a commercial radio station, any chance it could be reset to the ATC feed?

Thanks again for all the service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,804 ✭✭✭lintdrummer

Seconded. I was getting Newstalk on it last week. Which was unfortunate as I was trying to prove to my colleague that I had read back an instruction correctly 🤣

  • Registered Users Posts: 275 ✭✭Bumpstop

Apologies lads, I didn't notice this.

The power has gone a few times, it still should have restarted without intervention.

I put in a fix for this a while back, so something has failed.

Anyway should be back up now.

    Thanks for the heads up.
