I'm at a bit of a loose end today and found myself over on Reddit's r/reptime. I browse it fairly often tbh as it is a real eye-opener as to just what's being faked and to what level.

Anyway, came across this. A full 18ct gold Patek 5712, it's the guts of 2kg of 18ct gold along with costing $19k👀😲

I mean surely if you have that money to throw at a watch? You either buy genuine, or don't buy at all!

Starting to think that even the fakes are becoming a means of moving wealth if they are being made in high quality gold? Easy to wear 0.2kg **(I originally typed 2kg I missed a decimal place, Thanks to Cyrus and Esel for the spot)** of gold when travelling and at least have the melt weight if shít hits the fan?

By my calculation, 2Kg of 18ct gold is worth about €94,000 at today's prices. Bit heavy for the the limp-wristed! 😀

Btw, apparently the original use of metal detectors in airports was to detect passengers with gold in their possession. Could be an urban legend I suppose.

Its probably fake gold and all then too 😉

Apparently gold plated tungsten is a thing, and it'd be fairly close weight wise🤔

i think its 200g Banie, so 12k worth of gold

youd want to be off your chops

There's no way any watch weighs anything like 2Kg though.

I should maybe not have assumed that the scale was set to 1 decimal place 🤦

    Rookie error

That's mad about tungsten! Uranium Is very close as well.

    Gold Density:

    (near r.t.) 19.3 g/cm3

    when liquid (at m.p.) 17.31 g/cm3

    Tungsten Density:

    (near r.t.) 19.25 g/cm3

    when liquid (at m.p.) 17.6 g/cm3

Isn't it! I read a few months ago that one of the fake factories was going to release a gold plated, tungsten day date on a presidential bracelet. It would be quite close in weight but whereas gold will dent if dropped, the tungsten is far more likely to shatter.

It’s getting to a point where buying from anywhere but an AD will be too risky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,152 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I've been saying that since the Australian/Horology house shenanigans with fake Daytona's.

From looking over the posts over on Reddit? More and more effort is being put in to closing the gaps. Some of the stuff over there is scarily accurate and tbh? I wouldn't have confidence in my ability to discern between a good fake and the real thing.

Recently bought a cheapie retro Casio beater, like something I had in my teens.

Thing is, I have just clocked it, and it's gaining 16sec over 24hrs.

Now I know it was only 15 quid, but I'd have thought that even a basic digital quartz watch would keep better time?

I know the chances of me having bought a fake at that price might be high, so perhaps that's it? Or are the inards of these cheapo watches so bad that it's to be expected? (Although I'd have thought a genuine Casio cheapo would keep better time).

Have been keeping a close eye on rolex grey prices lately and they really are coming back, 124060 are now on C24 private sales asking 11.7k, WF&Co are offering under 10k to buy them in, retail isnt far away imo.

I have a few searches saved on chrono24 and checked yesterday. An interesting one popped up with box and papers from an Italian dealer at 6250 so I saved it. Just went back in and it's gone but now listed with a Japanese dealer at 8950. Is that normal.

He says it's in stock but no way I got from Italy to Japan overnight and his profile says he has 891 wathes listed.

I've been on chrono for a while but never seriously looking so curious if this is common?

    Watch in question

Fella I know in watchfinder told me they aren’t buying anything at the moment and only taking trades, that’s the first time they’ve blocked buying but it might be just temporary 🤷‍♂️

Was in the new JLC boutique in Paul Sheehan’s earlier on today..

I’m pretty tempted to potentially sell my DJ41 and pick up this Master Ultra Thin Moon.

Staff in there we’re absolutely lovely- very welcoming & approachable. Big change to going into Weirs where I bought my DJ41 & speedy yet always feel like I’m inconveniencing the staff 😂

They aren’t offering on much but they will still buy steel Rolex but around retail it appears.

Did realise they did the ultra thin in blue. is that steel or gold?

Used to be just black or white in steel. And grey in white gold.

They are yum though and very much my type.

The private market has not yet adjusted but it will come. Getting back to earth is only a good thing for watch people. People who want a watch as they want it to own might just get a look in again if there is no profit to be made.

Omega will take a slaughter but they have pumped RRP so hard the second hand market will still be ok. It’s the market mentally of having paid retail 6 months ago thinking they should get 80-90 percent of that back. Really at best it’s 60 percent. At best.

Important to remember inflation. Despite I think 2 x price rises in the last 12 months the slide continues on the second market while there is 10 percent inflation also at play.

Yes it’s steel- think the salesperson said that it was a boutique only edition- RRP was €13.8

Went in looking at a reverso and now can’t get that out of my head!

Well this guy's day went south fairly quickly and to the tune of $350k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,056 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I'd say that whole video is fake.

i totally agree, anything for clicks

paul thorpe was digging out a female youtuber for selling Rolex ad tips for 200 but he cant talk he's offering a crash course in flipping on his website

A while back I thought I'd dip through a few of the Paul chap's vids, more to check out a world of watches quite alien to me but then got drawn into his tales of attempted and actual robberies of his shop and him, including been beaten senseless and how the UK police were about as much use as tits on a bull. Now I had heard tales of how useless they could be in things like burglaries and the like, but bloody hell...

He comes across as your ducker and diver type, nearly a stereotype of the English species, 🙂 but seems nice enough to me anyway. Certainly nothing like a certain Irish guy lately of another thread.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Paul’s early videos are quite good when he’s retelling his old stories but he changed when he started getting sponsored and taking super chats

the story about his som selling fake Rolex was a surprise and then he was selling franken models on eBay using several accounts

I think Paul is far worse than Oisin .At least Oisin can make a decent watch video occasionally, granted it’s been a while but Paul comes across as the watch dealer version of a dodgy used car salesman. The advertising on his videos is about as classy as timeshare sales from the 90s and his general appearance is a pensioner version of some one from the only way is Essex.Anyone that repeatedly tells you that you can trust them and that they’ll always be honest to you , usually can’t be trusted in any way.
