Really sad and surprised to say I don't really care. Show seems in a bit of a rut.

This season has been pretty good and way better than the last 2 two seasons, best its been in a while so hoping for more good episodes.

I think the show has been consistently good for its entire run.

I think this season is as good if not better than any that have gone before.

In fact the only weak episode of the entire show that comes to mind is the Sex Dragons.

Im in the process of rewatching them all from season 1 and they are all very solid (other than episode 1 itself!)

    Some notable favourites:

    "Keep Summer safe"

    "Solenya"

    "Shoneys"

    "Whirly Dirly"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,027 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I love the sex dragon episode.

Haven't seen Solenya in ages. Absolute classic must watch it later.

I found this season good but I'm not exactly dying to watch every new episode the way I used to. Its better than last season though which had a lot of forgettable mid season episodes.

Mr. Poopybutthole thought it was great.

    Oooh Wee...

Aside from current legal challenges Justin Roiland is facing for domestic violence and false imprisonment (which apparently happened in mid-2020 but only made public in the past week or two as the charges are proceeding to trial), screenshots of messages he's sent to women (including some underage women) have started circulating on Twitter.

Messages are from a few years ago, but still pretty damning. Wouldn't be surprised to see more start to come out about him.

Those have a real "I'm too important and full of coke for there to be consequences" kinda vibe off them.

Real wacko Musk vs rescue worker stuff.

    FFS.

Well that's the end of Rick and Morty. It was good while it lasted.

Funny I always assumed it would be Dan Harmon who would end up burying the show over some stupid outburst or something.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

He's had issues with alcoholism I think and he's talked openly about and apologised for his harassment of Megan Ganz when she was a writer on Community.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,027 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Never knew about the Ganz thing but I know his wife left for a while due to it and there was the way he treated the fall out with Chase.

I remember him talking about the real people that inspired Community and he came across as a right egotistical twwat.

Roiland I literally knew nothing about until today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,213 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Harmon is definitely a bit of a knob. He did issue a very good apology to Megan Ganz on his podcast and discussed it for a long time on it, which Ganz fully accepted. But I think with both him and Roiland, success hasn't always been good for them. Harmon has an air of "tortured artist, burdened by the weight of his own genius" about him. He's capable of great things, but seems to lose the run of himself very easily.

Roiland seemed okay, though I remember seeing a clip of him recording some R&M improv while drunk/drinking, and since then I never felt I'd be surprised if he ended up self-destructing in some way, at least professionally.

Justin Roiland now gone from Rick & Morty, including voicing the characters.

He's also resigned from the games company he was part of, Squanch Games.

So we are getting a Rick & Morty gas leak season 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,213 ✭✭✭✭Penn

From what I've read, Roiland hasn't really written on the show since season 1, it's mostly been Harmon and the other writers with Roiland just doing voices and whatever bits of improv he throws in. Roiland's writing has more been focused on Solar Opposites and the video games. So at the very least most of the writing shouldn't change, but that gas leak will probably cause a few sore throats and voice changes for a hell of a lot of characters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,542 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Roiland is Rick and Morty though. Without his voice it's a completely different show.

Can't see this as anything other than the end of it.

They will just get someone who sounds like him for Rick and Morty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,542 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

They're pretty unique character voices though. At best you might get a mimic to do a broad approximation. But it won't be the same. It would be grand if it was a secondary character and I don't think it would matter that much. But these are the characters that we spend the most time with in the show.

It'll probably try and grind on for a couple more series, but it's hard to see it continuing in the long term.

Didn't they sign a contract before this season for multiple seasons?

Yeah I think they're contracted up to Season 10. Though if the quality/viewership dropped enough I'm sure the channel has a get-out clause to just drop them.

As for Roiland's voice, I actually saw some clips this morning of a guy doing not just Rick & Morty, but also Mr.Meeseeks and Mr.Poopybutthole. He was pretty bang on. Let's face it, there wasn't really that huge a range to Roiland's voice when compared to the likes of Seth MacFarlane. A lot of side characters that might show up for one episode would have slight variations of the same voice (same goes for the characters Dan Harmon would voice). But there'll definitely be a noticeable difference regardless, if not through voice then just the actual performance and how the lines are delivered, not to mention the loss of the improvisation stuff they'd usually incorporate. And given what's happened, people will be actively looking for the differences in the voice too.

I am guessing solar opposites might be in trouble too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

The guy Sean who mimics the characters is indeed very good, but a big difference between mimicry and actually acting a role out with all the nuances that come with that.

I'm not too worried about the improv - they can write that into the show to replicate what was probably largely ad-lib by Roiland.

Very interested to see what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,114 ✭✭✭timmyntc

Has replacing ad-libs with fake ad-libs ever worked?

From now on Rick and Morty will forever be divided into the pre and post-Roiland eras, and have a clearly distinct feel about episodes from each of the respective eras.

It's pretty likely alright. Although I think the show already has already had distinct changes.

It could turn out to be even better but the chances of that are pretty slim. It's not very often a show gets better after someone that big leaving.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 17,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

At least it's the sort of show that can easily work a voice change into the plot. Plenty of shows can handle people leaving - Doctor Who has done it for decades and often improved. Not quite sure how common it is for voice acting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,304 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,253 ✭✭✭✭GreeBo

that sort of stuff was a very small part of the show though.

I mean I think I'll be ok without Ants In My Eyes Johnson for example.

Yeah, a pretty damning account of what he's been like for quite some time.

Also, just to save other people having to Google it, when they say that the pornstar Riley Reid visited the writers room and "gifted the room a succulent", it's a type of plant.

Now I have to erase my search history...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,213 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Charges against Roiland have been dismissed.

Unlikely he'll be returning to Rick & Morty or his other shows anyway, and doesn't seem to negate or deny things like the messages he sent to underage women.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,304 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

So was the above just in relation to the domestic abuse charges?

Yeah he seems kind of done and rightly so....the messaging underage girls thing...grim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,213 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah, the domestic abuse charges against him were dropped. Not entirely sure if she dropped them, they investigated and found she was lying, or there was just a lack of evidence to bring it forward.

But he wasn't even let go of most of his shows based on that, but all the stuff about messages he'd sent to possibly underage women as well.

There's also a joke I've seen a few people make online that going by recent reports, the message in his tweet is the most amount of writing he's done in years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,027 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Lack of evidence.

But ya all of this has burst the bubble in terms of how much of his shows were actually him.

Not sure who the voice actor is but it's a pretty decent job all things considered. Both sound a little different when shouting but their normal conversational voices are fairly good.

Sean Kelly has always denied he was under any consideration but he's just so good I'd be surprised if it wasn't. Granted he was only ever imitating lines that Justin Roiland already delivered but they were almost identical in his newer stuff.

I much prefer this approach then suggestions by some that they should just go with completely different voices.

I will miss definitely Roiland's ad-lib nonsense and his comic timing. The new VA is never going to be the same but a decent imitation is better than none at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,010 ✭✭✭bren2001

Voices are fine. Rick shouting is obvious and Morty at the very end sounds off.

Will need to watch a full episode to really determine but it seems like the right call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

Like this is Sean Kelly's own voice. But he's already said he's not anything to do with S7.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Something definitely off there but pretty good, an episode or three and you wont notice it, like switching to different teabags or something.

Gearhead and Birdperson can't **** wait to see this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,542 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Well, that was a lot better than I expected, that's for sure.

If I didn't know about Roiland getting dumped I probably wouldn't have noticed really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭Homelander

    Watched the first episode.

Opening was funny but the rest of the episode didn't really live up all that well to the premise. I really agree with people who say that was never meant to be a season premiere but got moved up for whatever reason.

New voices were kinda limited in this episode but they seem pretty OK, I would say people unaware of the whole saga wouldn't really even have noticed.

Might be more obvious in episodes that centre properly on Rick and Morty but so far so good.

I thought Mr. Poopybutthole sounded like someone doing an impression at times.

Didn't know about the guest Star for it, especially since he had a pretty big part rather than just one scene.
