ABC 80's Radio Memories this week is from "Radio Valleri October 19th 1975 - After around a year off the air Dublin shortwave pirate Radio Valleri returned on October 19th 1975 with a repeat broadcast of a documentary about the free radio scene in Dublin.

As it is a shortwave recording there are patches where the audio is difficult to listen to but that should not spoil your enjoyment of what is a fantastic piece of radio history." That should make for interesting radio and I will try to give it a listen if I get a chance. I expect a certain Derek Jones to feature. He is involved with weekend oldies pirate Retro FM these days. He briefly brought back Radio Valleri over a weekend last year. Just one observation - it won't be from the 1980s!

I heard a good bit of this broadcast this evening online. Anorak heaven! It was interesting to hear about the stations around between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s and the people involved. It included a pre-Eamon Cooke Radio Dublin, which was often referred to by Derek Jones on his broadcast as "The Big D". That was later to be the name of a breakaway station. A certain Arno St. Jude was mentioned in relation to a number of stations in the early 1970s including Radio Valeri itself. He is better known these days as Declan Meehan on East Coast FM. The late Mike Anderson, who operated Radio Valeri with Dermot Blake, aka Derek Jones, featured near the start of this broadcast.

I picked up Raidió Rí-Rá in the car this morning driving to work, on 105.5 in Limerick.

Though the RDS just displayed RIRA

I was a bit worried until I read the thread and realised the RDS was missing a dash and fada's 😆

That's a pity guys. Trax Dublin will be missed.I continued listening on tune in app and DAB long after 107.1 closed.

Comreg have successfully forced people over to online due to the lack of selection on FM and freeDAB now seems to have disappeared

I love the photo of the SW transmitter, probably only 25-50 watts. The moral of the story is those quiet frequencies are quiet for a reason. Then we have the HSE and their illegal phone boosters! Not forgetting the local PP with is 'phone blocker' switch hidden under the table.

Well that explains what happened FREEDAB in Dublin. What a shame as there is no conflict as no other provides a DAB service.

I heard a bit of this broadcast. It made for fascinating radio. I was not aware of this station before. The only other all-reggae station I was aware of was NLR , which was on the go the last decade until 2016.

East Coast FM have new processing on air for the last few weeks. Sounding loud but significantly cleaner than previously and very nice to listen to. Must have finally retired possibly the loudest 8200 on the planet!

FM104 and 98FM, and Classic Hits and Q102, seem to be in processing standoffs, and all sounding the worse for it IMO.

Interesting that SPIN, who have much less aggressive processing, are now ahead of all other music stations in Dublin in the latest JNLR. Loud isn't always best!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,139 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

spin's audio is for me the best out of the legals both national and local in dublin.

104's audio does sound absolutely aweful, they need to dial it down.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words.

It’s a funny world when the CHR station has the most dynamic range! Some of the others in the market sound truly awful - smashed to pieces.

I was listening briefly to ABC 80s earlier this evening and, when I tuned in first, they were playing a song from the 1990s - Killer by Adamski!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,704 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Killer by Adamski was released in '89.

As an aside late 70s /early 90s appear on '80s ' radio stations.

Audio processing, for me Nova has the best audio and FM104 by far the worst.

With every radio station playing Christmas songs it's a good time to compare audio quality , I came across Q102 and Sunshine playing Brenda Lee Rockin round the Christmas tree at the same time, Q loud but not distorted , Sunshine lower audio levels but enhanced stereo separation and wider range.

East Coast , the 99.9 audio is.as before to my ears , 96.2 is heavily processed in comparison.

In the past a few pirates would pop up over Christmas but that seems unlikely these days

According to my research, Killer was released in March 1990, and recorded in January 1990. I got a PM from ABC 80s saying they were going through their playlist, which appears to acknowledge my point.

You are right in what you say about the past pirate activity around the Christmas period, with the likes of tribute stations and like-minded stations teaming up for joint broadcasts. What will probably happen is that the few remaining players, who tend to be on weekends, will do some additional broadcasts during that post-Christmas period.

A few Fridays back, I heard Phever on 91.6 FM - the last remaining dance pirate in Dublin! I wonder will it continue on into the new year.

That is dedication, particularly relaying an old Christmas Day broadcast on Christmas Day! Over the last 10 years or so, there have been a number of tribute stations during this time of the year. It's nice to see someone taking up that mantle, albeit technically in 2023!

Heard it start on FM, switchover from Christmas FM to Classic Hits 80s happened at midnight in the areas its available - Broadcasting to Dublin Cork Limerick and Galway .

The Christmas FM transmission in those places stayed on until midnight with announcements to switch to listen online between every song before CH 80s took over at midnight. Christmas FM transmitters in other places went off before midnight last night.

Is there a schedule for CH 80s?

Robot Radio on 107.1 FM today.

Seems to be the same station that carried the 88 closedowns last weekend but which improved modulation.

Energy on 1440 is also on air along with the last day of Absolute radio on 1215 & 1242 on the east coast.

This is Kiss FM from Monaghan town on St Stephen's Day 1988 as they prepare to close in line with new legislation.

In this pre-recorded programme, Susan Charles interviews some of the men working behind the scenes at the radio station, who also get to select their 5 favourite songs.

First, we hear from Artie ‘The One Man Party’ who spun the records on the overnight shift but didn’t speak on air; next, it’s Liam Brennan, who did the same job as Artie but at the weekend; and finally it’s the turn of Chief Engineer Miles Johnston (pictured), who speaks about getting the station on the air and about the influential stations of the past.

    Page 35:

"During this reporting period, ComReg investigated a complaint from the UK Regulator (OfCom) regarding harmful interference on a frequency of 5 770 kHz from an unlicensed broadcasting station operating from Ireland. The frequency band 5 730 – 5 900 kHz is harmonised by NATO and NATO member nations24 for military use. One of the issues with detecting HF/SW transmissions is, unless the transmitter is using considerable power, there is a very limited ground wave being emitted and direction finding of the arriving skywave (that can often be received across Europe but not in Ireland) is required. Following extensive field investigations and co-operation from several other European National Regulatory Authorities (“NRAs”) to determine the direction of the incoming skywave, the transmitter location was pinpointed and confirmed by ComReg to be coming from a private residence in the Dundalk area. ComReg obtained a warrant and conducted a search and seize operation with the assistance of An Garda Síochána. ComReg seized a home-made short-wave transmitter and associated antenna on the property. All equipment was removed by ComReg, and the property owner was cautioned and signed an undertaking not to undertake any further activity of this kind."

In Dundalk the last activity I heard was around March 2022, lots of different MW and SW frequencies before that. Until 08 January 2023 when a massive S9 +60 signal appeared tuning around 1611 to 1620 kHz. Since then most days it is heard on various frequencies including 1575, 1602, 1611, 1615, 1627, 1628, 1635 and 1655 kHz, and probably more. In the last few days it is down to +40, but being heard weak on Irish SDR's. On the North West SDR it is labelled Nova AM on 1615, apparently having transmitted some old Nova recordings, but I never heard any speech. Non stop oldies to coin a phrase, except that it is very much stop start, with no regular hours. When it was on before (if it is the same operator), it used to be mostly Radio Sovereign recordings.

On the car radio it fades out around 15 to 20 miles from Dundalk.

  • Registered Users Posts: 30 Donuthead

    Interesting.

I will be passing through Dundalk later today so will have a tune around for this.

Is the FreeDAB still on air from Dundalk?

  • Registered Users Posts: 30 Donuthead

Nothing was heard on Medium Wave and above around Dundalk and in fact no sign of Energy 1440 around Dublin earlier this morning.

To answer my own question regarding FreeDAB, a scan in Dundalk revealed the following,

    Coast

    Expreso Ukraine

    Kiss 106

    Radio Sovereign

    Storm

    Storm 80s

    Storm Country

    Storm hits

    Storm old school

There is nothing north of the border except the massive selection of UK stations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭castle2012

Yes DAB in Dundalk is good and works well on the M1 down as far as Drogheda and then fades out.

The guys must have one of the longest running dance stations still available on the airwaves. Fair play to them we all know how expensive it is to keep the show going, especially with the price of energy.

From what I believe they came out of the ashes of the old KISSFM which was massive back in the day.
