Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pretty sure I've seen them in Dunnes

Just checked, they should be in Dunnes - 4.50!

Oh I've never noticed them.....I'll be picking up a box next time I'm in dunnes !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭pigtail33

I had looked for them in two Dunnes, but neither had any. I did manage to get two boxes in my local (pretty small) Tesco this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭limnam

Same my local Dunnes haven't had stock either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,985 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

Well I don't think I've seen them before or they never registered....I usually buy the tea cakes....can't see a difference between them bar the price!

My dunnes is actually very big (though alot of floor space rented to other franchises) so they "should" have them

They were in both Aldi and Lidl tonight for €4.99.

Already halfway through the elite mikado that were on offer in Aldi this morning ....sure it's December 😂

Sold out in 2 stores I visited this morning, did they have much stock where you were?

No, as I said earlier the "bin" was almost empty I'd say there was less than 20 left when I got there at 9:35. I actually asked another shopper where they were as I had walked past them. The sign was pretty pathetic handwritten 2 for 1 less than a4 size stuck to wall.

There was no customer limit....now I didn't see anyone go mad. Most seemed to have 2 or 4 tins in their trolley. I had a feeling they'd fly out/limited stock.

Previous years were the same in lidl/aldi. The call it the secret offer and the signs are so inconspicuous that you would walk right past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,573 ✭✭✭tscul32

I know there have been plenty of Mince Pie discussions here but I honestly didn't pay much attention as I always make my own. This year however I'm not doing them so would like to know if any particular ones were a clear winner. I was gifted a box of Donnybrook Fair ones last week and thought they were lovely, nice balance of pastry and filling. They are pricey though, €7.95 for 6.

So id be very grateful if anyone could give a quick top 3?

I find mince pies change every year.

    This year I've had

Dunnes puff pastry were good enough but better heated in the oven.

The Dunnee simply better either star on top 2 box's for €7 were my favorite.

M&S Mini were to orangey for me.

I got Avoca ones whilst the mincemeat was nice and there was a lot of it. The pastry was overdone.

I too want to buy a box of mince pies but not sure what to get - I’d like to try the simply better ones but I don’t want two boxes so can’t avail of offer then. I think I read in here somewhere that the lidl ones are meant to be nice - their boxed ones and their bakery loose ones.

Avoca ones this year not as good as they have been before. Think they've changed the recipe and seem stodgier. Dunnes the nicest I've tasted this year so far.

Elf2 got a selection box at his last footie training of the year. He came home and gave everyone their favourite bar from it!

Either I'm getting older or Kraft changed the recipe again but Roses were actually nice this year and I had completely gone off them.

Interesting! I got three tubs for €10 earlier in the year and didn't bother with Roses as they were muck last year. I'll be looking to try them now.

I picked up a box in Aldi this morning €4.99.

I got the little tin of Roses to put with someone's present and card- I don't know about taste, but they make a cute little gift. 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,477 ✭✭✭✭DvB

We were gifted a tub of Roses a few weeks ago (just after Halloween) and they tasted the same to me, i.e. cheap, sickly sweet & nothing like normal cadburys chocolate... maybe they changed them again since then but it reminded us not to bother with the tubs of them for Christmas this year.

I might have eaten two whole Dairy Milk bars on Saturday night. Not usually a massive chocolate fan (more biscuits) however polished off two bars in no time!

Gave up my search for the Fredo Christmas Crackers and the Oreo tins. Is what it is I suppose

I wonder will the fancy Malteser Truffles /Kit Kats etc end up been 3 for €10 etc soon.

Aldi didn't have much stock when they had a deal, maybe Lidl will be better...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,610 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Aldi have these lovely vegan "biscoff" truffles just in, in the middle aisles. Salted caramel too.

Pricey enough at nearly a fiver for 150g mind!

Still have to pick up my celebrations, heroes and box of Tayto!

Did a stock take of the Christmas cupboard this morning and did the list for the big shop.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,642 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I'm doing the drink shop this evening, then the food shop on Wednesday. 🙂

Yeah, I was just thinking that Wednesday would be the best day as I'd imagine Thursday and Friday will be mental. I've all the drink got already and the Christmas cupboard is well stocked. We went for a stroll around Cork City this afternoon just to soak up the atmosphere and I really enjoyed it.

Just took a casual stroll to Tesco to have a browse and wow stock levels are low across almost every aisle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,573 ✭✭✭tscul32

Will leave the shop to thurs or fri but will still need to pop in on sat for fresh berries. Thankfully walking distance from all major supermarkets.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,642 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Well the drink has a better sell by date. 😄

I know!! I was up in the Artaine Castle one a couple of hours ago. I was mainly getting the booze, but I also got the only Tesco brand Christmas pudding they had left, in case they don't get any more in, and the last bottle of sherry that they had. I wasn't browsing the main food aisles, but a few seemed fairly sparse.

I'm making my list (and checking it twice) for the Big Food Shop now. 😁

Opened a 'tin' of Heroes tonight. Lasted an hour between two of us. I'd swear there used to be more in them.

I know that feeling looking at a few measly remains in my heroes tub.

I swear a couple of sweets in and you can see the bottom of the tub already.

Bliss in Dunnes this morning at about 8.30am (they opened at 7am). Full shelves, car park near the door and place wasn't busy at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭jellybear

Definitely the best time to go, if possible. I always do my shopping weekly shopping at 8.30am and it's lovely and quiet! Planning on doing our weekly shop Tuesday or Wednesday....try to avoid the place Thursday and Friday 🙈

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Think the OH will do our big shop Thursday and I’ll stay home with the kids.

Can get fruit, milk etc in local shop on Fri/Sat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,985 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

I was out n about, pulled into dunnes on way home just to pick up stuff for school lunch..... couldn't get parking....it is a busy dunnes at best of times.... went to Aldi.

Not looking forward to the big shop.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,543 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Go as early as you can, I would say try later in evening too but then stock can be hit and miss

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,985 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

Ah I'm usually there early. Though can't be too early or milk and bread aren't stocked.

This year is the first year in nearly 10 yrs I'm not having "visitors" I've been an accidental host a role I didn't want or like, so enjoying not having any of the extra pressure .

My "big shop" will really just be a normal shop but sharing the supermarket with an extra million people....

I think a few people were unaware Dunnes was open early today. They’re also open out my way till 2am on Thursday and Friday. Might do a midnight shop
