Schools were humbled by the u18 clubs . Pandemic removed their advantage ? Obviously the writing has been on the wall for the schools for a while but bohe pandemic has probably accelerated the process. Haven't produced a half back in 20 years and lions absent on schools players. The future is clubs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Which province? When? I wouldnt saying writing has been on wall for schools but its good to see gap closing. The future is clubs and schools and more integration between them and doing more to get schools players integrated into clubs and working more to keep people playing into 20s and then full adult level be that J2/3 or AIL and higher up...

huh? beirne, henderson and murray were all schools players. i presume conan was too but im not certain

Murray was as much Garryowen as Munchins. 9 who toured at some stage another on that tour. discount Aki as schooled in NZ so different. so its 8. Henshaw and Furlong from clubs backgrounds(both also played in their school but are clubs players....). Kelleher, Porter, Beirne, Henderson, Conan were schools.

u18/19 sides playing warm ups ahead of interpros. Leinsters 18s sides played Worcester and Gloucester in England yesterday. Munster 18s sch playing 19s and Connacht 18s and 19s playing Ulster in next few days

Ennis and Bruff have 2 teams each at U18 and they manage to put them all in the same group?

Could they not have swapped them around with other North Munster teams?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

would have made more sense. wanted to keep all city teams together i guess...

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,112 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

It's just lazy to be honest.

I'd assume that both clubs probably have picked a strong "A" team and then a second squad made up of mostly U17's and some others.

Putting them all into the same group just squeezes those teams out in the early phase.

They could have easily swapped out two teams with the "city" group without any impact.

Travelling to Ennis/Bruff isn't any more difficult than the city clubs travelling to Senans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

It is lazy to an extent. Yes i will assume both clubs have an 'A' and 'B' side but the sides wont be squeezed out. they;ll still play phase 1 and have qualifiction for plate or bowl after christmas. Maybe the 2 clubs wanted it this way as well

How come Ruadhan Quinn isn't included in the U19 squad?

No evan O'Connell or joe hopes is a surprise if they arent injured. Both started in the row for the u18s last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Could be 20s. Evan o connell didn't train with the munster 19s for most of summer and only came back for interpros as was with academy/pros all summer. Hasn't heard was injured...

This is my first year following this.

I noticed that there isn't a ton of carryover from the under 18s schools festival team last spring to the under 19s squad named. Only 12. Multiple guys i found impressive didnt make it.

    Is that normal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Yes. Though some from the 18s festival could have been 17s so playing 18s again. Others could now be 20s, playing up.

So St.Michaels will be competing in the world rugby schools competition this year, do they have a strong SCT this year or they likely going to get pumped by Grey,Milfield and hamilton at the festival.

Who are considered favourites this year for the LSSC this year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

    Rock are favourites IMO

But not massively so like last season.

Michaels wont be far off them.

    Terenure/Gonzaga are dark horses

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭LRind2008

Has there been any preseason games yet, I think Marys lost to Belvo 30-19 or something like that but not sure Marys were full strength

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

South african school's rugby is generally on a different level tbh, I'd expect any team from Ireland to struggle against the like of Greys, Affies, Paarl Gym etc. When the tournament is organised it's difficult to know who will be the top teams that year, so obviously the best teams from each country might not be competing, but I remember the top SA schools running up cricket scores against the english and NZ teams. They put some of their games on the Supersport Schools youtube page if you want to have a look. They play incredible fast and physical, it's a great watch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭LRind2008

I know back in 2013/14 Blackrock battered EG Jansen who were ranked the 5th best school in SA at the time and wasnt even close. But that blackrock team was very very good.

Will be interesting to see how the other countries teams compare to Grey.

A Rock in 2015 beat a South African schools amalgamation side as well I think.

The 2013 Leinster Schools Cup Final between Rock & Michaels produced a hell of a lot of pro rugby players:

-Garry Ringrose, Charlie Rock, Jeremy Loughman, Oli Jager, David O'Connor and Nick Timoney on the Rock side

-Cian Kelleher, Ross Byrne, Nick McCarthy, Denis Coulson, Ross Molony, James Ryan, Josh Murphy and Max Deegan on the Michaels team that also included a 7s international in Adam Leavy.

That was a very strong couple years for Blackrock the team the year after had: Loughman, Timoney, Doris, Jager, Conor oliver, Hugo Keenan, Brian Mollen (Ire 7s), Joey Carberry, David O'connor

Lads this is youths rugby thread running for over a decade. dont have schools talk leading to this being closed like so many of those threads

And that rock team had many youths players: Loughman(athy), Oliver (skerries), Carberry (athy), o connor (skerries)....

Munster league phase 1 nearly at half way phase now. Qualifiers for phase 2 cup etc beginning to take shape

What exactly are the national training squads? I assume the players will have periodic training camps and consistent contact with coaches throughout the year?

Will the various underage squads this year be made up exclusively of these players or will some come from outside? I guess 85 players isn't sufficient for four squads, even before injuries etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,154 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

They are potential future academy and pro players. Yeah they get periodic training camps and sessions.

The irish squads will look outside these players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭ljsulster

National talent squad is a group of players identified by the irfu and provinces to be the players with the most potential to play professional rugby at provincial or international level

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,112 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

Think of it like a sub sub-academy.

These are players that they feel are the most likely contenders to make the provincial academies in the next few years, so they get a bit of extra attention and coaching etc.

The Underage provincial teams will be made up of these guys plus others outside the NTS.

Not all the NTS members will make the academies of course , but they are the most likely group.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,544 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

Are there any recent examples of guys who were not in a NTS at any point and made an academy? From within ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

Dan Sheehan comes to mind anyway, more recently Temi Lasisi.

  • Registered Users Posts: 69 ✭✭alanb92

Very surprised not to see Charlie Sheridan included in the National Talent Squad, he looks a serious prospect. Anyone have any insights into why he wasn’t included?

Are there are any other notable omissions?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,544 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

There was a guy from munster who had some hype who didnt make it i think. Neff Giwa.
