It's probably fine, RMx units are well-built & can take spikes and the 3090 Ti max spikes are in the 470-570W range.

Thinking of updating my PC but have had my head in the sand for the past couple of years while GPU prices were crazy.

    Does anyone have a TLDR?

Think prices are coming down, possibly below MSRP, but new gen coming this year?

Probably best off waiting till then??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,076 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

GPU prices are trending back to MSRP, sadly European prices are slower to return to normal.

New GPUs are expected in the next 5-6 months but nothing concrete yet.

Oh and Intel are due to launch their own lineup, too.

Well lads, I received my pc today. All grand, no damage, it was well packed. Came from UK, but no issues with customs etc.

Works fine and already tested in good few games. Very happy, no complains so far!

Noticed my mouse pad was really weird and was making mouse movement very rough. ( It's very old... got it from Wow Burning Crusade collectors edition lol.

So picked up in gamestop That Razer XXL Mouse matt. Its freaking huge, gigidi, but it is so much better. Mouse moves so smoothly now.

Nice to have a pc setup again. It was way overdue. Coming back to ultrawide is so damn nice after 3 years on 15.6 laptop screen hehe.

Here's my Ghetto Setup now hehe. I know its not fancy, but as I said, I am finally back! The only things left from old setup are: Monitor, mouse, headset.

Really craving to get second monitor on the side. Still have my old Dell 24" IPS one. Just need idea how to implement it. Not much space on table and it being glass, I can't get those monitor arms.

Was thinking that. That wall is bare. Plan is to get a shelf there and some LED lights and maybe wall mounted monitor arm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,454 ✭✭✭jebidiah

I'd say get a solid desk and a monitor arm. More versatile if you need to move the desk for some reason.

Ive been using an IKEA Gerton desktop on standard legs/Alex drawers for over two years.

Two 27 inch monitors mounted no problems.

No drilling, and no fuss if you don't like the position in the end.

I was thinking of getting new desk, but it will have to wait, I spent way too much already. There are a few nice desks in Harvey Norman now. Most likely overpriced to ****, but I could look up the company and see if they sell them elsewhere or directly.

Can anyone recommend a decent router that I can pair with my Virgin Media Hub if set to bridge mode? I want to be able to configure lan-wide DNS to point to my PiHole, as opposed to configuring this on a per-device basis. I don't need the router to have wifi functionality, as I've a set of Deco-M4's to handle that (they connect to a LAN port on the current router, and act as access points.) I don't need anything fancy, just something sold/reliable with good user options.

Im wondering how long more my current rig will hold up.

8600K @ 4.5ghz and an EVGA 1080TI SC, not seeing it struggle with any new games at all at 1440P and easily chucking out 100+ frames in the vast majority of games although ive started to cap all games to 90fps apart from really fast paced ones.

Ive been sort of getting that itch to buy new hardware, usually hits me in a 3 year cycle or so but the sensible side of my brain is thinking i dont really need to just yet.

Mine is even older , 2017, 7700k & Evga 1080 ...... I don't have an itch , mine is a full blown rash . But with the 40 series just around the corner and DDR5 getting closer to prices I could afford I'm trying to hold tough . October is usually my time to empty my piggy bank .

Looking to go from Ryzen 1600 / Vega 56 to Zen 4 + RTX 4xxx once it's all out.

Is DDR 5 going to cost a fortune?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,670 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I'm scared to type these words in case I jinx it, but my RX480 has stopped crashing, after opening the PC and cleaning it. So not as big a panic to replace the PC now. Means I can wait for prices to come down.

Is DDR 5 going to cost a fortune?

Not really it's in and around the price I would have paid for DDR4 years ago and I only went for 16GB's so two 8 GB sticks where as DDR5 comes with 32GB's so two 16GB sticks so not that bad of value when you think about it.

I was all set last week to buy a second hand CPU off adverts. It was all going good until the seller wanted me to pay by Revolut. I was hesitant and messages back and forth with seller but decided to go through the motions until Revolut themselves had a warning do not send money to someone you do not know as you will not get it back.

He had no feed back either. I see someone after me contacted him about buying more than the CPU off him. Hopefully he came to his senses too and doesn't get scammed.

I know he could be a genuine seller but how am I to know that especially when he wants to be paid by Revolut. PayPal is the safest way as you can get your money back with them.

You only get your money back with PayPal if it's closed as a transaction and PayPal takes a cut. When I've sold stuff like this I give the buyer the choice of paying half the PayPal fee or sending the money as a gift. 100% of the time the buyer has chosen to go the gift route which means no comeback.

Revolut is fine, have used it alongside bank transfer plenty of times both buying and selling. The real issue is buying something from someone with no feedback on a delivery basis. In those cases my rule of thumb is meet up and inspect or move on.

I cannot believe Intel admitting they cannot beat the 5800X3D in some games with their newest and best.

Intel in trouble when AMD release a 7800X3D

I mean it does also depend on the game to be fair. If I recall correctly, the game suite HUB used to test the 5800X3D had it pretty much neck and neck with either the 12900k or the 12900ks, can't remember which.

I am very curious to see what the Zen 4 3D V cache models bring to the table however, I've a feeling AMD will do plenty of milking.

This fella turned out to be a scammer. I got a email from adverts at around 11pm warning me to have no contact with him and if I gave him/her my number do not reply and that they blocked him.

He was giving me the poor mouth when I was contacting him saying he needs the money now and that he will lower the price as he is stuck. He even said let me know if you change your mind when I said I would leave it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,076 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Sure Ryzen 7000 can't beat it either in some games right now.

Really hoping it goes on sale during Black Friday week!

I seen that too alright but I was just having a dig at Intel.

I seen many reports online about people waiting for the 7000 X3D chip before jumping from AM4.

Looking at the TDP for the recently announced high end RTX cards - and with top RDNA3 possibly being similar - I'm wondering if custom water-cooling might get a small boost again in popularity. Anyone here ever done their own custom loop? I'm thinking it could be a fun project for over the autumn, although it's quite possible that this is just how my midlife crisis starts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,019 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

If AMD can it would be a smart move to put the 7800X3D out a few days before Intel's release, even if its a paper launch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

I did a custom loop a good few years ago. It gets expensive quick but I'd do it again (in something a little less restrictive than a mini ITX case)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,746 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Yeah, some of the prices for blocks alone were eye-watering! What mini ITX case was it out of interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

Can say that again - I paid just over €1k for the watercooling gear I got. I had it in a NZXT Manta, fairly large by mini ITX standards to be fair but still quite tight

That time of year where I get itchy for upgrades. Currently running an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 5700 GPU. Have served me well but I've a hankering for upgrades with a new COD and Wow on the horizon.

Currently feeling changing the CPU to the 5800x3d. Looks to be the last big bang on AM4 and from what I'm seeing for folks in Wow it looks impressive. Is a bit on the pricey side so looking to see what else would be more bang for buck from a 3600.

While I'm waiting on independant benches to drop, everything in my gut saying to jump on the Intel ARC A770. Love the form factor and ticks all the boxes for me. Im waiting on GPU prices to get a grip and the Nvidia 3070 is where I was looking, early indicators are ARC hits that spot so if its confirmed might take the plunge.
