UhOh I know you from the EV forums I think?, you are a nice chap there, nice new i4 isnt so a man of some means.

Yeah its an odd situation that getting a Rolex is. Spend history is a thing. I have a very healthy spending history (in my opinion) and I have gotten exactly sweet **** all thats worth my time, its a madness to the point I took my disposable off to a different hobby. There are lads out there that are treating this as a business and buying 10 watches a month on credit cards, selling them off for a small loss and repeating. Literally 100's of thousands through the AD a year. These fellows get thrown all the good watches. Its a shocking state of affairs.

Been on a list for a Daytona now 7 years, Sky-dweller 4 years, Aquanaut for 2 years, not a sniff. And I spend mid tier 5 figures a year on jewelry and other watches (actually spent, done with that **** now). I know guys spend 200k in a single pop on dress Pateks and they get the good watches fairly quick like 2-3 months. I am like most infuriated that I cannot spend my money as I want, but Unkle is right.

Mostly I just went to the grey market and bought what I wanted, my time is more valuable than being waiting on a list. . But have been put on many many lists by many many sales people (as they wrapped up my wifes latest trinket, or my latest "relationship piece") and told me the watch I actually wanted was "just year away", "you're next on the list sir" and I walked away with lots of enthusiasm and a spring in my step for my impending new watches. Never got them but left happy...the very purpose of the waiting list (no such thing BTW its only a preferred client list). Probably I ask for watches that are just outside my spending history, but thats kind of a catch 22 isnt it.

Hell so many friends text me all the time " I am getting a sub at retail in 6 months" my standard reply is "you are in your hole". There are people just wait and get the watches, and you might be lucky. But if you asking for anything heavy like a Pepsi or a blue SD you dont have a hope unless you are a big and regular spender, and most big spenders know all about the wait lists already (kinda of a if you have to ask, your not thing). If its a sub or a batman of something modest you are after then maybe the wait time is realistic.

My advice just get the watch you want grey, the market is tanking at the moment and you will pay only a small premium over retail for most watches, and your dignity will remain intact, its not a game worth playing or you will end up jaded like me and overspending on things you dont really want.

Waiting list watches are like fusion energy....always 5 years away.

Sorry you feel that way UhOh, I know the money aspect can be a thorny one for us Irish esp when discussing what is wholly discretionary spending, esp during a time such as now.

That said? It's an important one in terms of how likely one is to get anywhere with an AD when trying to get a Rolex/Patek/VC/AP at list price. 893bet, Fitz , Unkel, Cyrus and others are all fairly spot on in their assessment of the state of play with regard the list and "getting the call".

Even the notion of a wait list has fallen by the wayside with Rolex now. Recent stories of ADs wanting prospective buyers to basically convince them why they should get a one 🤷‍♂️

Rolex and the others at the top of the Stainless sports watch tree have reached that curious position where a prospective buyer has to convince the seller why they "deserve" to be given the watch. It's a marketing masterstroke but a quite perverse economic model where the restriction of supply at RRP for what are these brands "cheap" models drives pricing on secondary markets and that by itself becomes a means of conspicuous consumption and further drives prices on secondary markets and pushes up the length of the fabled wait-list even more.

The wait list is a myth, the actual means of buying a Rolex via an Irish AD is a spend history and quite often a significant one at that. I mean I am on a list quite a few years at this stage, with ne'er a sniff.

I do hope that you stick around, whatever about starting off with us being nosey bastárds 😉 as I have been known to sometimes say?

This really is the nicest corner of boards 😉

@Fitz II "Mostly I just went to the grey market and bought what I wanted, my time is more valuable than being waiting on a list..."

This is me as well. My dignity and time are worth far more than indulging some sales person in Weirs by buying things I do not want. I've sourced a couple of decent enough grey dealers over the years and they are where I go. And thankfully prices seem to be moderating and even falling. I've my eye on an Explorer 1, probably a 124270, And whereas I wouldn't pay 4k over retail, I would pay 2k, and that is looking more likely recently.

Not sure if there’s any Tudor fans here apart from myself but there’s something new being released this week .I’m thinking either a new ranger or oyster prince ,failing that maybe a bb pro in polar which would be very nice .Supposed to be another release in September and the Dublin Tudor boutique is due to open before Xmas .

Polar BB Pro would be fire. It will be interesting to see what they have up their sleeves

Bit off piste (that's allowed right?), since we all have exceptional tastes here could someone point me towards a place that sells nice cufflinks. They're for my wedding so I'm not opposed to spending a little more than the usual €20 M&S pair I'd usually go but not going for the €5k pair of Patek Nautilus ones Weir's have 😀.

I like the pair P&P have where they are repurposed watch movements, I've reached out to confirm if they can deliver in time and yet to hear back.

Had to look that up, pretty cool

A phone call will tell you if they can ship them. Otherwise if they are in stock, you could always go collect them presuming you're not that far away. It's an easy enough spin up from Dublin. Best of luck with the big day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

Have given them a Whatapp but they said they weren't in stock in Belfast, so me thinks they're a special order item so I asked them if they could get to me in time but yet to hear back. will wait until the afternoon before giving them a bell. Cheers!

A watch guy in the office called me over the other day, saying he had news, I knew it was "watch news" and was keen to see what he had, he said he'd bought a Tag. Now I'm not a fan of Tag really, I like two of them and would only buy one which is the Monaco in blue.... and what had he bought, a Monaco in blue.... Sigh.

I even got home and said 'hey, so and so bought a Tag' and my wife laughed and said 'Not the Monaco in blue...'

I'd thought about picking one up later in the year as I'm travelling so I would get a decent price, think I'll try and find something else. If I'm paying decent money I would at least like it a little exclusive locally.

Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari Is The New Thinnest-Ever Mechanical Watch: https://www.ablogtowatch.com/richard-mille-rm-up-01-ferrari-is-the-new-thinnest-ever-mechanical-watch/

While technically and conceptually impressive, it does nothing for me at all aesthetically, which is such a key part of watch design and purchase consideration imo.

I have two pairs at home you are welcome to either if you think they are similar to what you’re looking for and can’t get the others in your timeframe. Drop me a PM and I’ll chuck them in the post if you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,155 ✭✭✭893bet

I was offered one by my AD but turned it down.

As I have stated I like my watches slim and this is just a little too thick for my tastes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,553 ✭✭✭Fitz II

I like it. Cant afford it but I get it. RM are actually innovativee with their use of materials and designs. They are not to my tastes andmassivelyy overpriced, but thats an impressive bit of watchmaking. Tried on my first RM recently in Belfast an RM11 and it did exactly nothing for me. However if you want to wear a house on your wrist both in value and size for a lot of them...then rock on and more power to you.

I am a big fan of formula 1 and everyone...all the drivers, owners, managers and team leaders wear RM....its really taking that motorsport crown. And Rapha rocks his one...but he is rapha the GOAT.

Tragically boring....as if an explorer was not plain enough, lets take it to another level of bland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,155 ✭✭✭893bet

    I like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,155 ✭✭✭893bet

Not serious, the only way to make the ranger more boring was to turn it into a “collection”. Zzzzzzzz

I was really, really hoping for a polar Blackbay Pro 😕

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,684 ✭✭✭david

Same, I’m sure it will come just 12 months later. Same as the black and blue 58. Otherwise it’ll tank the demand and resale price of the other too soon.

Cruel how the press teasers for this were literally polar exploration 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,155 ✭✭✭893bet

Jesus maybe it’s actually alright as that lads sense of Style is questionable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

Yeah I’d written it off but if he’s against it I nearly have to like it out of principle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I prefer it to an explorer and spec wise is no different, plus it’s €3k versus what €9ish for an explorer .I’d definitely take it over an explorer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,868 ✭✭✭sparrowcar

I like it, there's a time and place for a simple or plain watch that is understated and doesn't shout.

Just got a text to say I owe customs on two kids tops which I shouldn't as they are supposed to be vat free under 12.

Do I remember someone here getting charged for books despite them also being vat free on import and claiming it back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭funkyouup

    oops, delete please

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I posted about being charged vat on two books from the uk.I didn’t argue it and just paid it as I wasn’t prepared to deal with what would no doubt be a long drawn out disagreement and having to prove customs wrong .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,491 ✭✭✭stuchyg

That must be what I was thinking of, il pay it either way as still a good price but hate paying when I shouldn't.

I actually spoke to someone in customs a couple weeks ago about school uniforms being shipped to me from the UK and they said that an post still haven't got to grips at all yet with what should and shouldn't be subject to vat.

She reckoned you are far better off using one of the big courier companies instead

I am reasonably confident that if I buy from Norway that there's no VAT or Duty as it's an EEA/EFTA? Am I correct in that assumption? And if I am, can someone do me the favour of talking me out of buying another Sinn U2 😮😂

Quick question/looking for advice. So I’m very much leaning towards a Panerai as my next watch, a Pam01085 specifically. Looking for advice as to where I should purchase, so I live/work in Saudi Arabia with resident status, and over the next few months I’m currently in Italy, and between august/September I’ll be in Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Paris and New York. Should I be buying in the eu and getting a tax refund as a non eu resident? Is buying in the states cheaper/less tax? Or should I be buying in a London through a grey dealer? Assuming I’d have to buy retail to avail of any tax refunds in eu, what discount would one expect retail? Any tips greatly appreciated.

Buy retail and claim the VAT back. Someone in here got one I think with 20% discount a year or two ago in Weir's, but that would be very best case scenario. Ask for the 20%, negotiate, see how much you get.

Are you sure about the 1085 though? It looks nice but it has a sausage dial, not the sandwich dial Panerai are famous for. It's a bit like buying a FWD BMW 😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,938 ✭✭✭C0N0R

Is the difference that much when they’re infront of you? (Not side be side) And how much more is the equivalent sandwich dial?

Will weirs be willing to give a healthy discount and then also complete the paperwork for a tax refund?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,220 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Weirs probably isn’t going to be the place to get a healthy discount. Presume you can buy pre owned from watchfinder and still reclaim the vat ?

    go for the 1313

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,938 ✭✭✭C0N0R

are second hand goods available for vat refund? I thought not, and you need to have a retailer that is setup for the tax refund scheme or is it just a matter or presenting to customs at the airport?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,220 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Not sure actually maybe not. Could be worth an email to wf and co anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,684 ✭✭✭david

In UK for sure second hand goods are not available for a tax refund. Resellers pay VAT on the margin not the sale price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I’ve the 1084. Same watch , different colour dial . Sandwich dial is nicer but certainly wouldn’t let the sausage dial put you off. The panerai that made panerai famous has a sausage dial and the 1086 is the closest in appearance to it . The 1086 is same as 1084 just without small seconds.

I reckon you could get 10% off in weirs but if you are going to Italy , try get to Florence and go to the panerai flagship store / museum and buy one there .That’s my plan for my next Panerai purchase anyway .

If the sausage dial bothers you how do you feel about the snap on case back and 100m water resistance for a panerai ? Entry level panerai is going to be about comprising

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65,719 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Neither of those bother me. In fact I nearly bought a 1085 myself but I felt the sausage dial was too much of a compromise. But hey, I'm no purist. I could very well one day buy one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I tried this on a few weeks ago .It’s the first watch in a long time that made me say wow.Even my wife commented that my eyes lit up for it .She’s of the opinion that my recent purchases have been for the sake of it as opposed to loving the watch and she might be on to something..

Any way- blue sunburst dial , Sandwich dial , date , steel bracelet , small seconds , 44mm , proper crown guard . what’s not to love ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,940 ✭✭✭✭banie01

That's a beautiful one Schwarz. That and the 1313 are 2 of the most eye-catching in their current lineup. The bracelet would swing it for me tho 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,220 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Yep had the 1313 for a while beautiful watches , never tried a panerai on a bracelet how does it wear ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭scwazrh

The bracelet wears well , substantial and a bit of weight to it as you would expect .It really dresses the watch up compared to the straps .Theres no quick adjustment on it though which at €9k I would of expected and the fact that its a new release bracelet you would think they would have included it.

My 1084 has the luminor case with the slab sides vs the 1316 having the 1950s style case which is much nicer. After handling it I could really see how entry level a model mine is.

Gorgeous watch. I had the same model in in Orlando back in March and really liked it. Don't know if it's the camera or a different face colour but it looked a lot brighter. Can't see it on their website so maybe just the camera exposure but a lovely watch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,220 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Yes the micro adjustment issue has put me off panerai bracelets in the past, no excuse in this day and age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65,719 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I couldn't live without micro adjustments. In warm humid weather like this my wrist is at least half an inch bigger than in cold weather and the variance within the day is quite big too.
