I know most of my posts on the weather forum are quite positive as we usually get plenty of nice calm days throughout the other seasons that I am very grateful for. January this year was gorgeous for e.g. Summer just always seems to disappoint me though, this is the only season I find frustrating as I just don't seem to be able to come to terms with us not getting real summers like the rest of Europe even though I have lived in Ireland for most of my life.

So for summer people who want to just be able to sit outside in a t-shirt in the evening in June or simply lie on the grass in a park reading a book or catch some rays, it just always seems to disappoint.

Today wasn't too bad in Dublin in the end, the wind is cold but sun is warm, still way too blustery for my liking though. Must try harder.

Exactly. Some posters on here get way too caught up in the weather on one particular day. Writing off an entire month on the back of a bad afternoon.

Also, funny seeing some posters now talk about good summers in previous years (whereas at the time they were bemoaning the lack of high temps or sun every second day).

Also, did people miss the fact that May was a record breaker for warmth in some areas?

Finally, a reminder of what regular temps in Ireland are for some perspective:

    May - 13 - 15º

    June - 16 - 18º

    July - 19/20º

    August - 19/20º

May was statistically warm but it was definitely a case of lies, lies and damn statistics. It was very cool and windy for a lot of the month. The night time temperature didn't drop much over the day time temps so the average temp was statistically good. There was a few nice days over but overall found it a very unsettled month.

Today has been a dire day in the south. Went to the Cork and Louth game earlier and got drenched and was very cool. Awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭compsys

Well I can't speak for everywhere, but in Dublin the temp got up to 16 or 17º on many days - which is more akin to the temps you'd get in June.

Exactly. Just because you had some nice days in Dublin doesn't mean the rest of the country had great weather. Today was an awful day in the south.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭compsys

Well I'm talking about the month of May. Not today.

Besides, according to Met E, every station in the country was far warmer than average in May. And Cork had around half its usual rainfall.

Do you mean to tell me there are people on a website giving out about the Irish weather!

    Shock horror I don't believe it🤣

Just for reference as I mentioned we usually always get a beach visit in around June Bank Holiday as temperatures over 20 degrees, not a hope this year.

Thankfully sun did come out but hasn't made much difference here in NCD because the wind is so strong.

I agree with Thelonious Monk, I suppose we expect too much of summer in Ireland.

Dry, sunny days in winter and spring I always see as a bonus but I don't think it's too much to ask to be able to sit outside on 4th June and for it to feel like more than 11 degrees.

May in theory was warm but we had a lot of very wet days, it was windy and warmer than normal evenings sweked the statistics.

Yes - usually I'd have started sea swimming by now - but haven't. Even though sea temps are a tiny bit above average.

I understand why some people are feeling a bit annoyed with the weather but some perspective really is needed. We're not the Med. And let's be thankful most of us (not all of us!) are well able to afford a cheap flight away to the sun for a week or two at some stage each summer.

Also, we had a very dry first few months in some places - so unfortunately the rain was bound to come back eventually.

The thing that is probably annoying people is the fact that we've had warmer and dryer than normal conditons for a long time now and the weather gods decided to flip back to a cool and unsettled Atlantic pattern just in time for summer, not knowing how long this pattern will go on for.

At my Davis station, located in an exposed rural spot near the coast in Arklow, the average daily max temp for May was 16.1c

    Average daily min was 8.1c

    11 days were above 16c

That was by no means Cold and in fact we had pretty much record grass growth in the period

Great day in Mayo today. Sun shining and it still is now. I was outside with just shorts on for a couple of hours.

With respect, if someone wants this so badly then they really shouldn't be living on an island at 53N on the edge of the Atlantic. The climate you mention above is not typical of here, and such t-shirt evenings in June are the exception rather than the rule. I suggest somewhere in the Med. for that. It was 40.4 in Alghero, Sardinia today, for example.

Average would be great 😆 11 degrees and rain all day today is way below average. And as mentioned a few times on here, May was pretty average daytime temps but the milder nights brought the monthly average up a lot.

we just have to put up with this climate that we endure, another summer and the Azores disappears but you can bet your house that a big 1040 one will be around next December!

Probably the most depressing June charts I’ve seen in ten years!

Actually I thought of the famous Belmullet weather report of June 1944 looking at the charts today.

A stunning evening here in Castlebar , light winds and clear blue skies. Nearby Newport reporting 18 degrees at 8pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,971 ✭✭✭Birdnuts

Here in Belmullet it was similar conditions but the strength of the wind really took the edge off temps - hopefully it starts to calm down for the remaining days of the BH!!

Damn that's class! Nothing like it here in my part of Dublin, had a couple clouds glowing red but nothing special. Looks more like a winter sky than a summer one with how vivid those reds are.

Lovely highdef! Lots of showers popping up across Wales now with plenty of lightning. Some heavy stuff around Arklow also

This is more of a hunch than a long-range forecast but I would expect June and July to come in fairly close to average and August and September warmer than normal this year. I realize that August often disappoints with a lot of cloud but certainly overdue for a back-loaded summer. Of course, if August is above normal like May was, nobody is going to notice the warmth at midnight.

Usually here in the south east we would have had a hot spell by now but it hasn’t materialised yet. We have barely had our garden furniture or barbecue out so far. But it hasn’t been awful either. If we get some good weather in July and august I’ll be happy enough. August in particularly has been very disappointing in recent years.

But we've just had a remarkably dry May, and most of the year so far, with every month down on average rainfall except one. We had a wet day but when was the last wet day we had? Pity it landed on a Bank Holiday. For anyone with a garden, it was badly needed. The soil was bone dry in Cork City.

I also cycle a lot and last night (Saturday) was the first evening since the clocks went back that I decided not to go out as the weather was bad. It's been breezy and the sun hasn't been splitting the rocks but I'm happy as long as I can get out with the kids and get out on the bike and into the garden. This year has been exceptional so far in that regard in Cork.

I stopped posting here because of the negativity and I also found people could never see past the weather on the day they were complaining about. Just checked in again after a long time and nothing has changed!

May was very dry in Cork but not elsewhere.

Met Eireann noted the number of rain days varied from 14 days(Cork) to 22 days, and a number of stations were above 100% of average.

From Sept-Mar it was exceptional dry and on our school run there was only a handful of times in that whole period that we drove to school due to rain.

However towards end April/ May we drove to school more than in the whole of those 7 mths.

We all knew dry spell couldn't last forever, it's just a shame that it may be summer months where we now get above average rainfall.

Lights are on here in NCD as its so dark and it's raining.
